Production of the T-Bird started in 1955 and lasted till 2005.
When first introduced as a sporty two-seater convertible, people didn’t perceive it as it was intended “Ford’s direct response to GM’s Corvette sports car”, rather it created a new segment market niche known as the personal luxury car.
Despite the success of the first generation, the 2nd generation of Ford Thunderbird released in 1958 to 1960 coped with a major change in positioning strategy; The new T-Bird gained a second row of seats giving its customers more room in seating and cargo.
In addition, the Thunderbird 2nd generation could be ordered with either a 352 cubic-inch V8 engine that puts out 300 horsepower or with a huge 430 cubic-inch engine that puts out 350 horsepower coped with a 3-speed manual or automatic transmissions.
With more than 37,892 units sold in 1958 alone, the T-Bird proved to be a history-making vehicle and broke records again in 1959 with more than 67,456 and even higher in 1960.
From its introduction in 1955 to its most recent departure in 2005, Ford has produced over 4.4 million Thunderbirds.
