Celebrating 20 years of the Porsche 911 GT3

The unveiling of the first Porsche 911 GT3 in March 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show signalled the start of a new era for discerning sports car drivers. More than any other Porsche 911, the GT3 embodies the hallmarks of Porsche Motorsport. Developed by two-time World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl, race engineer Roland Kussmaul and the Porsche Motorsport specialists from Weissach, the Porsche 911 GT3 brought race track agility to the road. Since then, this athlete has become faster, more precise and more dynamic with every generation. With a naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, it remains the most popular Porsche 911 among purists to date. Around 80 per cent of all 911 GT3 ever produced are regularly driven on race tracks across the globe.

The race versions of the Porsche 911 GT3 have written motorsport history. In addition to countless class wins, the GT3 achieved numerous overall victories in major endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Spa, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours Nürburgring, which it has won seven times since 2000. One of the main success contributors is the fact that innovations and experience gained from motorsport are incorporated into the development of the road versions.

Successor to the 911 Carrera RS 2.7: the first GT3 made its debut in 1999

Featuring advanced racing technology, the Porsche 911 GT3 continued the tradition that had started in the 1970s with the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7. For the first time, the model was not given the designation “RS” for Race Sport, but the name GT3, directly referencing the GT class in which the motorsport versions were to compete. The water-cooled 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivered 360 hp (265 kW). As such, it was hardly a surprise that the Porsche 911 GT3 had already earned its first laurels before its debut in Geneva. With Walter Röhrl at the wheel, the new model completed the 20.8 kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than eight minutes, setting a new benchmark for street-legal sports cars.

Such exceptional performance was made possible not just by the race-proven boxer engine, but also thanks to a precisely tuned overall package: the chassis was lowered by around 30 millimetres and the brakes uprated. The six-speed manual transmission originated from the Porsche 911 GT2. The gearbox ratios, axle geometry, anti-roll bars and springs could be adapted depending on the circuit conditions. Lightweight construction came before comfort. A distinctive sign of its motorsport origins was the fixed rear wing of the 911 GT3. As an option, customers were able to order their 911 GT3 as a Clubsport variant, which also included a built-in roll cage.

The first Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles rolled off the production line in Weissach in May 1999. The new model provided the foundation for the successful race versions 911 GT3 Cup, 911 GT3 R and GT3 RSR.

New generations in quick succession

After the great success of the first 911 GT3, Porsche presented a new evolution stage of the street-legal sports car with racing genes every three to four years. In 2003, the power of the boxer engine increased to 381 hp (280 kW), thanks to the use of the VarioCam, the variable camshaft control system. The GT3 was now also available with ultra-high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). The next increase in power to 415 hp (305 kW) followed three years later. For the first time, the Porsche 911 GT3 featured the sporty Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). In 2009, engineers increased the displacement of the six-cylinder boxer engine to 3.8-litres and the power to 435 hp (320 kW). The all-new rear wing and full underbody panelling produced a substantial increase in downforce (almost double in comparison to its predecessor).

On the 50th birthday of the Porsche 911 in 2013, the fifth generation of the 911 GT3 celebrated its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, with a completely new engine, transmission, body and chassis. The drivetrain consisted of a 3.8-litre naturally aspirated engine with 475 hp (350 kW), featuring active rear axle steering and a dual-clutch transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung, PDK), for the first time. The model completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7:25 minutes —more than half a minute faster than the first ever 911 GT3 back in 1999.

The latest version of the 911 GT3 was launched in 2017. The focus of development had been on the six-cylinder boxer engine: its displacement increased to 4.0 litres and the power output is 500 hp (368 kW). Customers can choose between a manual six-speed transmission and PDK. In addition, a Touring Package is available which replaces the fixed rear wing with an automatically extending spoiler.

2020 Volkswagen Passat Arrives in the Middle East

Volkswagen Middle East welcomes the new 2020 Passat to the region with three offerings of different variants and prices to suit a wide range of customers. The impressive and bold new redesign offers an impactful sedan offering in the region.

Over eight years ago, Volkswagen completely overhauled the midsize sedan to include more interior space and modern comforts, combined with the company’s signature fun-to-drive nature. Building on this success, the new Passat of today offers more of what matters to the modern customer; a bold design, upgraded technology and enhanced access to convenience and driver-assistance features.

Victor Dalmau, Managing Director for Volkswagen Middle East said: “The sedan market plays an important role in this region. Last year, the previous Passat model made up nearly 20% of Volkswagen Middle East total sales, highlighting the importance of sedan in this region and that this model is a popular choice for customers and businesses alike. So we are delighted to welcome a new and upgraded Passat – one of Volkswagen’s key iconic vehicles. It allows our customers to drive a premium German-engineered car at an affordable price and has long resonated with buyers for its combination of comfort, reliability and driving dynamics.

He added: “This new model has stepped up the style factor and upgraded the technology to make it even more attractive. In addition, we’ve made desirable convenience and driver-assistance features more accessible.”

Thierry Seys, General Manager of Al Nabooda Automobiles said: “It’s great to have the Middle East region receive the 2020 Passat before any other global market, so we are excited to get it out on the roads to showcase this new and re-designed vehicle.”

While the 2020 Passat retains the underpinnings of the previous model, it has been completely restyled. A dynamic coupe-like roofline, dramatic “tornado” line, and dominant grille give the Passat a bold new look—at once, elegant and sporty. Standard slim LED headlights and taillights, along with more prominent Passat badging that runs the width of the rear boot, giving the car a more premium look.

The 2020 Passat will be offered in a range of variants starting from the classic Trendline model which has been upgraded to include features such as eco-LED headlights and LED taillights as standard, to the Comfortline model with 17 inch alloy wheels and leather steering wheel, up to the Highline which comes with 18 inch alloy wheels as standard and leather sport seats.

Inside, the Passat combines a sophisticated new design and upgraded technology with the spacious cabin that made the outgoing model popular. The cockpit features a horizontal design, incorporating air vents that flow across the dash in a style reminiscent of premium models. A new, more contemporary instrument panel has been fitted, along with a new glass-covered infotainment touchscreen. Complementing the new interior design are new colours and premium materials.

Every Passat also comes with standard Volkswagen Car-Net® App-Connect technology, which integrates compatible smartphones with the three major platforms—Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ and MirrorLink®—making select apps accessible from the infotainment screen.

BMW at the IAA Cars 2019 in Frankfurt.

The BMW stand at the IAA Cars 2019 international motor show in Frankfurt am Main revolves around the theme of the future of driving pleasure. Alongside the latest new additions from a broad range of segments that the premium carmaker will be bringing out as it presses ahead with its ongoing product offensive, BMW is also exhibiting fascinating vehicle studies and trailblazing technologies that are set to have a major impact on individual mobility in tomorrow’s world. The new products on show at the IAA Cars 2019 reflect both the tremendous variety in the company’s model portfolio and its capacity for innovation in the future-focused fields of action identified as part of the NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy and known by the acronym D+ACES (Design, Automated driving, Connectivity, Electrification and Services).

The upshot of the largest model offensive in corporate history was that the BMW Group sold more vehicles worldwide between January and June 2019 than ever before in the first six months of a financial year. The BMW Group continues to be the world’s most successful supplier of premium cars and is able to offer customers in more than 160 countries just the right selection of models while catering to all sorts of different legal conditions, technical requirements and individual preferences. Besides a flexible marketing strategy and a diverse product portfolio, this also calls for a broad range of drive technologies comprising highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, all-electric powertrains and plug-in hybrid systems. The BMW Group has gained a clear advantage over its rivals by using flexible vehicle architectures that will allow any particular model to be quickly produced with different drive technologies as demand dictates. This high degree of customer-centric flexibility is illustrated to impressive effect by the globally successful BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle, which will be available with a choice of conventional engines, a plug-in hybrid system or all-electric drive from next year. The BMW Group’s outstanding expertise when it comes to integrating highly complex yet beautifully harmonious complete systems underlines what a strong position the company is in as it competes with established suppliers and newcomers in the automotive sector.

BMW Group market leader in electrification.

Following an early product offensive that has resulted in a wider choice of models than any of its rivals can offer, the BMW Group has also emerged as a leading force in the manufacture of vehicles with electrified drive systems. The company is ranked as the market leader in Germany for new car registrations of electrified cars with all-electric or plug-in hybrid drive systems and the most successful established premium brand at both a European and global level. (Source: IHSMarkit Report 8/2019)
The introduction of the very latest battery cell technology in the plug-in hybrid versions of the BMW 2 Series, BMW 3 Series, BMW 5 Series, BMW 7 Series, BMW X5 and MINI Countryman as well as the BMW i cars further increases the electric range and brings new comfort functions when charging. Electric driving this way becomes an alternative for more and wider customer segments. By increasing the proportion of electric driving and employing digital services such as the BMW eDrive Zones function for automatically detecting green zones, the new plug-in hybrid models that can also be seen at the 2019 Frankfurt show will be able to make a major contribution to cutting CO2 emissions in urban areas.

The BMW Group will be bringing out yet more models with electrified drive systems as soon as 2020, including the plug-in hybrid variants of the BMW X3, BMW X1 and BMW 3 Series Touring and the all-electric MINI Cooper SE, which is also receiving its show premiere in Frankfurt. This will once again involve harnessing the expertise in the field of electrified drive systems that has been amassed during development of the BMW i models for transferring technology to the BMW and MINI brands. By 2023, the total number of models with an electrified powertrain offered by the BMW Group’s brands is set to increase to 25.

Driving pleasure in unprecedented variety: the premieres at the IAA Cars 2019.

The universally popular family of BMW X models is receiving further reinforcement in the form of the latest Sports Activity Coupe: the new BMW X6 is making its global debut at the IAA Cars 2019, marking the arrival of the third generation of the BMW model that first spawned this breed of vehicle. Anyone visiting Hall 11 at the main entrance to the Frankfurt trade fair arena on 12 – 22 September 2019 will also be able to experience how BMW’s characteristic brand of driving pleasure is set to evolve both now and in future with a wide array of vehicle concepts hailing from all manner of different segments. The third generation of the compact BMW 1 Series is celebrating its show premiere, as are the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe four-door luxury sports car, the immensely sporty and versatile new BMW 3 Series Touring and the new edition of the BMW X1. The new BMW X5 Protection VR6 Security Vehicle that is making its maiden appearance in Frankfurt combines the ability to power ahead over any terrain with high levels of personal protection.

The presentation of the BMW Vision M NEXT, meanwhile, provides a foretaste of the future of motoring at its sportiest extreme. This progressive plug-in hybrid sports car serves up a captivating blend of emotion-stirring design and pioneering drive technology.

World premiere: the new BMW X6 – athletic prowess and commanding aura in imposing form.

It was at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show that BMW first unveiled the BMW Concept X6 in public and created a new breed of vehicle in the process – the Sports Activity Coupe. Now, twelve years later, the third generation of the production version is receiving its world premiere at the very same venue. The new BMW X6 succeeds in combining the agility and versatility of a BMW X model with the attention-grabbing looks of one of the brand’s coupes in more compelling fashion than ever. Crisply drawn lines, powerfully sculpted surfaces and proportions that have been stretched to even more dynamic effect help to give the car’s exterior an athletic, commanding and imposing appearance. The optional BMW Laserlight adds an eye-catching flourish to the front end’s design, as does the illuminated BMW kidney grille that can also be found on the list of optional extras.

The interior of the new BMW X6 creates an exclusive ambience while also radiating sporting flair. Standard specification includes the BMW Live Cockpit Professional featuring a fully digital instrument cluster and a Control Display that each have a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches. One of the operating concept’s key elements is the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which can be controlled using naturally formulated spoken instructions. On the optional equipment side, highlights include thermoelectric cup holders, glass applications for selected controls, the Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge, the Ambient Air package for fragrancing the interior and the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond+ 3D Surround Sound System. The new BMW X6 will be launched in November 2019 with a choice of four engines. Heading the line-up will be two M models boasting extremely powerful V8 petrol and straight-six diesel units.

Show premiere: the new BMW 1 Series – sophisticated driving pleasure in the compact segment.

The new BMW 1 Series is set to continue the brand’s rich vein of success in the premium compact segment with a refreshed design and drive technology that has undergone an extensive overhaul. The new edition employs BMW’s sophisticated front-wheel-drive platform for the first time. This helps to substantially increase the amount of space on offer inside the new model while also ensuring that the third-generation BMW 1 Series continues to beguile drivers with its class-beating agility and dynamic prowess. What’s more, BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive will also be available as soon as the model is launched in September 2019 – in the 225 kW/306 hp range-topping BMW M135i xDrive (fuel consumption combined: 7.1 – 6.8 l/100 km [39.8 – 41.5 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 162 – 155 g/km) and the BMW 120d xDrive (fuel consumption combined: 4.7 – 4.5 l/100 km [60.1 – 62.8 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 124 – 117 g/km) with an output of 140 kW/190 hp.

This new form of the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned can be attributed first and foremost to the cutting-edge technology used in its chassis and control systems. Of particular note in this regard is the near-actuator wheel slip limitation technology – or ARB for short – which enables the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system to intervene far more swiftly and with much greater sensitivity. The BMW M135i xDrive is additionally equipped with a limited-slip differential at the front axle, while Adaptive suspension is available as an option for all model variants. There are other new features too, such as the state-of-the-art display and operating concept, the BMW Head-Up Display being offered in this model for the first time, plus the extended range of driver assistance systems and digital services from BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.

Show premiere: the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe – luxury sports car with four doors.

Premium carmaker BMW is pressing ahead with its product offensive in the luxury segment by adding a third model variant to the new BMW 8 Series range. The new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe melds outstanding performance credentials with the flamboyant design and superior spaciousness offered by a four-door luxury sports car. The extra 201 millimetres of wheelbase length compared to the BMW 8 Series Coupe improves ride comfort, and every last millimetre has also been used to increase the amount of space in the rear, where two passengers are able to savour a genuine sports car feel. There is also a third seat in the rear compartment that is suitable for use on short journeys.

The four-door sports car was derived directly from the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. Quite apart from the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe’s distinctive proportions, the design of its flanks and rear end clearly distinguishes it from its stablemate too. The cabin’s luxurious feel is partly down to the lavish standard specification, including Vernasca leather trim, an instrument panel and door shoulders wrapped in fulled leather, ambient lighting and the BMW Live Cockpit Professional. There are also a number of optional extras that are available exclusively for the four-door variant in the new BMW 8 Series line-up: a very generously sized panoramic glass roof, a four-zone automatic climate control system and electric sun blinds for the rear side windows and rear window. The three engines available at launch in September 2019 range in output from 235 kW/320 hp to 390 kW/530 hp and are mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. The BMW 840i Gran Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 7.5 – 7.4 l/100 km [37.7 – 38.2 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 170 – 168 g/km) with rear-wheel drive is also available.

Show premiere: the new BMW M8 Coupe and the new BMW M8 Convertible – high-performance sports cars for the luxury segment.

BMW M GmbH is stepping up its current model offensive and making a foray into the luxury segment with its new high-performance sports cars. The formidable performance capabilities are mainly down to a V8 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving concept, which generates 441 kW/600 hp in the new BMW M8 Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km [26.6 – 26.9 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 242 – 238 g/km) and the new BMW M8 Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 – 10.6 l/100 km [26.2 – 26.6 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 246 – 241 g/km) and an even greater output of 460 kW/625 hp in the new BMW M8 Competition Coupe (fuel consumption combined: 10.6 – 10.5 l/100 km [26.6 – 26.9 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 242 – 238 g/km) and the new BMW M8 Competition Convertible (fuel consumption combined: 10.8 – 10.6 l/100 km [26.2 – 26.6 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 246 – 241 g/km). The high-performance unit is partnered by an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, while the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system and Active M Differential take care of planting its power firmly on the road.

Designed with the specific demands of track use in mind, the bespoke chassis technology includes a newly developed braking system offering a choice of two different brake pedal settings that can be selected at the push of a button. The driving experience can additionally be customised using the Setup button, another new feature that provides direct access to the settings for the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking system so that they can be individually configured to suit personal preferences and the current driving situation. The M Mode button on the centre console that is also making its debut can be used to alter both the functionality of the driver assistance systems and the information shown in the instrument cluster and Head-Up Display. The dynamic potential of the new high-performance sports cars also shines through in the familiar M design cues that are the result of functional requirements and in the cabin’s model-specific styling. Here, a cockpit designed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience merges with an exclusive aura of luxury.

BMW

Show premiere: the new BMW 3 Series Touring – more space for sporting flair.

Characteristic sportiness and versatile functionality set the tone for the new BMW 3 Series Touring, which is making its show debut at the IAA Cars 2019 and will be arriving in dealer showrooms in September 2019 too. Equipped with the latest generation of engines and cutting-edge chassis technology, the sixth generation of the Touring model once again sets the benchmark for agility and driving dynamics in the premium midsize class. Heading the model range is the new BMW M340i xDrive Touring (fuel consumption combined: 7.5 – 7.1 l/100 km [37.7 – 39.8 mpg imp], CO2 emissions combined: 170 – 162 g/km) with its 275 kW/374 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine. A plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 3 Series Touring is going to be offered for the first time from summer 2020.

A host of intelligent details give an added boost to the Touring model’s state-of-the-art functionality, including the anti-slip rails for the boot floor and the separately-opening rear window. Boot capacity can be increased from 500 to a maximum of 1,510 litres. The premium ambience of the interior, the top-class standard specification, the sophisticated display and operating concept – which can be optionally upgraded to also include gesture control and the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant – and the latest digital services from BMW Connected and BMW ConnectedDrive combine to ensure impressive levels of driving pleasure and passenger comfort.

Show premiere: the new BMW X1 – compact Sports Activity Vehicle in top shape.

Visitors to the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show will find the new BMW X1 more alluring than ever. The Sports Activity Vehicle that has proved such a success in the premium compact segment takes the limelight with its carefully revised design, more sophisticated drive technology and top-class equipment features in the areas of control/operation and connectivity. Thanks to the larger BMW kidney grille and the new-look LED headlights and rear lights, the vehicle radiates a far greater sense of presence and individuality. The high degree of variability and refined premium ambience in the cabin add to the car’s state-of-the-art functionality. Apart from this, the new BMW X1 is optionally available with a more advanced operating system with a Control Display up to 10.25 inches in size, a multitude of cutting-edge driver assistance systems and an extensive range of digital services from BMW ConnectedDrive.

The new BMW X1 comes with a choice of latest-generation petrol and diesel engines with three or four cylinders producing outputs ranging from 103 kW/140 hp up to 170 kW/231 hp. Depending on the particular variant, the engines can team up with a six-speed manual gearbox, a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission or an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and can be combined with either front-wheel drive or BMW xDrive all-wheel drive. A plug-in hybrid variant will also be added to the new BMW X1 model range in spring 2020.

Show premiere: the BMW Vision M NEXT – the future of sporty motoring.

The BMW Vision M NEXT was one of the highlights at the #NEXTGen Event held at BMW Welt in Munich. Now, visitors to the IAA Cars 2019 show are also being treated to a glimpse into the electrified future of the BMW M brand. Like the BMW Vision i NEXT that is also being exhibited in Frankfurt, the BMW Vision M NEXT represents a prototype version of the BMW driving experience of tomorrow. The all-electric BMW Vision iNEXT mainly serves as a showcase for the EASE experience concept, illustrating how autonomous driving is set to transform life on board vehicles. The BMW Vision M NEXT, on the other hand, places the focus more on the pure and emotionally engaging experience of driving yourself in the BOOST concept. The Vision Vehicle takes the form of a progressive plug-in hybrid sports car with an emotion-stirring design and a puristic interior that places the focus squarely on the active driver. Its Power PHEV drive system opens up a new dimension in sporty driving, offering a choice between electric all-wheel drive and puristic rear-wheel drive, with either purely electric propulsion or the power of a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. It generates a system output of 441 kW/600 hp and enables the car to sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) from rest in just three seconds. There is also a BOOST+ mode that puts extra drive power on tap at the push of a button for an even more exhilarating performance experience. The car has a range of up to 100 kilometres (62 miles) when driving in all-electric mode, allowing the majority of journeys to be completed with zero local emissions, both in urban areas and beyond.

With its unmistakable sports-car proportions, low-slung, wedge-shaped silhouette, gullwing doors and clear, pared-back styling, the BMW Vision M NEXT succeeds in blending classic design cues for dynamic performance with sustainable driving pleasure. Inside the cabin, innovative technology is used to focus the driver’s attention on what is happening on the road ahead. The “focus logic” takes BMW’s famed driver focus to the next level by adapting the information displays to the changing driving situation.

As the vehicle speeds up, the readouts shift increasingly into the driver’s direct field of view and centre more and more on driving-related infor creasingly into the driver’s direct field of view and centre more and more on driving-related information.

Acura Type S Concept to Debut in Monterey

Acura returns to Monterey Car Week, one of the world’s top gatherings of automotive and motorsports enthusiasts, to debut the Type S Concept. Following its world premiere at a private Acura reception Thursday, August 15, the Acura Type S Concept will publicly debut on Friday, August 16 at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering. It will then be showcased at the historic Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Concept Lawn on Sunday, August 18.

Representing a fundamental step toward fulfilling Acura’s return to Precision Crafted Performance, which started with the debut of the second-generation NSX, the Type S Concept sets the stage for re-introducing Type S performance variants to the Acura line-up after a decade hiatus, and will heavily influence the character of the upcoming, second-generation TLX Type S.

The Acura design team set out to express the essence of Precision Crafted Performance through stance and proportion, crafting a silhouette that is powerful and expressive, yet clean and cohesive. Building on the foundational beauty and style of the Acura Precision Concept, the Type S Concept’s powerful form is characterized by a wide track and low stance, with an expansive hood that stretches forward from the A-pillars.

“The return of Type S is instrumental in our mission to return Acura to its performance roots,” said Jon Ikeda, Vice President and Acura Brand Officer. “From bringing back the NSX to winning at the highest level of North American sports car racing and ushering-in a new generation starting with the RDX, we are revitalizing Acura on the foundation of our original and authentic brand values, piece by piece.”

Performance at the Core

“We’ve been dreaming about a new performance-focused Acura concept car since the Precision Concept debuted,” said Dave Marek, Acura’s Executive Creative Director. “The Type S Concept speaks unambiguously to performance and to the essence of Acura Type S design.”

The Type S Concept showcases new elements of Acura design including next-generation, four-lamp Jewel Eye® LED headlights, an open-surface Diamond Pentagon grille, and “Chicane” daytime running lights and taillights, both drawing inspiration from the Acura ARX-05 Daytona Prototype race car.

Refined Style Meets Raw Emotion

Building off its powerful stance, the Type S Concept’s front fascia reflects both form and function. Large center and side intakes are capable of supplying required airflow to a high-performance engine and brake package, with fascia detailing evolved from the NSX and Acura Precision Concept. The headlights are underscored, literally, by translucent white “Chicane” LEDs that serve double duty as running lights and turn signals.

The front fascia transitions to a side profile that communicates both power and elegance. Sheer surfaces and continually shifting angles are balanced by sharp, intersecting lines that create the impression that every surface is changing shape as it flows front to rear. Sheer side surfaces gradually open-up to muscular rear wheel arches, emphasizing the concept’s wide track.

A sharp and distinctive tail features an upswept decklid with a sharply creased centerline (drawn from the hood) and integrated forged carbon spoiler. “Chicane” LED taillights, a large rear diffuser and quad chrome exhaust outlets complete the look.

Acura Type S

In addition to the rear decklid spoiler, forged carbon – created by bonding layers of carbon on top of one another to exceed the strength of traditional interwoven carbon – is applied to the front and rear splitters, side sills, rear decklid spoiler and multi-spoke 21-inch wheels.

A “square” 285-series summer tire setup ensures high levels of grip in the most dynamic of driving situations. All four corners feature drilled Brembo™ high-performance brakes with four-piston calipers, providing ample stopping power and an aggressive appearance.

The Concept’s bespoke “Double Apex Blue Pearl” paint reflects a liquid and electric hue that pays homage to blue Type S heritage models, including the acclaimed 2007-2008 TL Type S. “Double Apex Blue Pearl” employs Nano pigments and a color-infused clear coat that impart a sense of fluidity and motion, and enhance the paint’s luster and brilliance.

The Acura Type S Concept was conceived by the Acura Design Studio in California, led by executive creative director, Dave Marek, and chief designer, Ben Davidson and will be showcased throughout Monterey Car Week. After its private debut at an Acura hosted event Aug. 15, it will make its public debut at The Quail, a Motorsports Gathering on Aug. 16, with a press conference scheduled for 9:30 a.m. The Type S Concept will also be on display at the historic Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Aug. 18.

Acura Type S Heritage

A fundamental step in fulfilling the promise of Precision Crafted Performance, Acura will debut two Type S performance variants in the next two years, starting with the second-generation TLX Type S. Type S models will deliver a high performance driving experience with quicker acceleration, nimbler handling and stronger braking performance than conventional Acura models. From 2001 through 2008, four Type S models set the standard for Acura performance in North America:

  1. 2001-2003 Acura 3.2CL Type S: The Type S performance line debuted with the 2001 Acura 3.2CL Type S. It featured a 3.2-liter V6 engine with 260 horsepower (upgraded from 225 hp), a 5-speed automatic with a manual shift function, quicker steering, 17-inch wheels and tires and a sport-tuned suspension. In its final model year, a 6-speed manual transmission was available.
  2. 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL Type S: Debuting a year after the 3.2CL Type S, the 3.2TL Type S featured the same performance-tuned engine and transmission, and similar suspension, wheel and tire upgrades. Unlike the 3.2CL Type S, the 3.2TL Type S was not available with a manual transmission.
  3. 2002-2006 Acura RSX Type S: The RSX Type S joined the family in 2002, powered by a new 2.0-liter i-VTEC® 4-cylinder with 200 horsepower (upgraded from 160 hp) connected exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission. In 2005, the RSX Type S received a power increase to 210 horsepower, along with styling changes that included an eye-catching larger rear wing.
  4. 2007-2008 Acura TL Type S: The third-generation Acura TL rejoined the Type S lineup in 2007 and was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 making 286 horsepower (upgraded from 3.2-liter V6 with 258 hp), a 6-speed manual transmission, 4-piston Brembo brakes, sport suspension, upgraded wheels and tires and distinctive quad exhaust.

Precision Crafted Performance: Reborn

Coinciding with its 30th anniversary in 2016, Acura set a new course for its future, turning its focus back to its original and authentic roots as a performance-focused luxury brand. The second-generation Acura NSX launched as the pinnacle expression of Precision Crafted Performance kicking off the brand’s determined focus on a future that was first and foremost about performance.

In 2016, the foundations for a new design language were set with the debut of the Acura Precision Concept. Drawing inspiration from NSX, the Precision Concept adopted a supercar stance and sheer, alluring surfaces that pointed to a bolder more distinctive future for Acura design. The Concept also showcased key new production styling cues, including edgier lines and Acura’s signature new Diamond Pentagon grille, which were quickly adopted across the entire lineup, most recently on the 2019 ILX compact sports sedan.

Acura also expanded its sporty A-Spec package to all core models, attracting younger, more enthusiast-oriented customers in the process. In early 2018, the brand announced its intention to re-establish Type S performance variants in its line-up, and the development of a new, Acura-exclusive, turbocharged V6 engine. In June of last year, Acura launched the 2019 RDX as the first in a new generation of Acura models designed from the ground up around Precision Crafted Performance. In its first year, the third-generation RDX has become the retail best-selling model in luxury’s largest segment, setting multiple consecutive all-time monthly sales records.

The brand has also seen a highly successful return to sports car racing in North America. Acura teams and drivers fielding the NSX GT3 Evo and ARX-05 Daytona Prototype currently lead both Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championships in the GTD and DPi classes of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

About Acura

The Acura lineup features six distinctive models – the RLX premium luxury sedan, the TLX performance luxury sedan, the ILX sport sedan, the five-passenger RDX luxury crossover SUV, the seven-passenger Acura MDX, America’s all-time best-selling three-row luxury SUV, and the next-generation, electrified NSX supercar.

Aston Martin Valkyrie and Valhalla take flight

The Nordic hall of the heroes is Aston Martin officially open for business as Aston Martin’s latest mid-engined sportscar – Valhalla – has taken flight for the first time alongside the world’s most highly-anticipated hypercar, Aston Martin Valkyrie.

Celebrating  Valhalla’s North American debut at the world-famous Monterey Car Week’s ‘Quail’ display, today’s video showcases both ground-breaking models – born from Aston Martin’s collaboration with Red Bull Advanced Technologies – being put through their paces at the luxury British marque’s official development facility at Silverstone by High Performance Test Driver, Chris Goodwin.

While Aston Martin Valkyrie delivered its stunning debut as part of this year’s British Grand Prix earlier this year, its closely related Valhalla sibling has until now been solely shown in static guise after wowing the crowds upon its unveiling at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. Today’s ‘dynamic concept’ car signals the next step on the journey towards delivering the first of these exceptional hypercars.

Though making greater concessions to practicality and road use, Valhalla remains true to the uncompromising engineering ethos laid down by its bigger brother. Benefitting from genuine state-of-the-art F1TM technology and unrivalled active aerodynamics utilising variable morphing surfaces, Valhalla is set to deliver equally impressive levels of handling performance. Powered by a bespoke Aston Martin V6 twin-turbo engine, Aston Martin Valhalla will surpass figures shown in today’s hypercar world, underlining its own elite status.

Strictly limited to 500 coupes worldwide, the programme remains oversubscribed as Aston Martin continues to handpick the final lucky customers who will have the opportunity to own this extraordinary machine.

In contrast, the sold-out Aston Martin Valkyrie’s testing programme continues apace with the first customer delivery scheduled for later this year, when the model will claim its unrivalled position at the top of the automotive arena.

The first ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe an unusual outfit for its final testing phase.

The finishing touches are currently being applied to the first ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe as part of its final testing phase. And the new four-door coupe for the premium compact segment has engaged in a spot of self-promotion on its calibration drives around the Munich area. Adding an extra level of intrigue to the eye-catching multi-coloured camouflage of the test cars is a large QR code on the front doors directing curious eyes to www.bmw.com/2-series-gran-coupe. Ahead of the 2 Series Gran Coupe’s world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2019, this homepage will keep visitors supplied with bulletins of new information on this extravagant and innovative vehicle concept. The worldwide market launch of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will get underway in spring 2020.

An elegant and engaging gateway into the premium compact segment.
BMW is bringing the four-door coupe concept that has already enjoyed great success in higher vehicle classes into the premium compact segment. The first ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe celebrates its arrival with a fresh dose of individuality, aesthetic appeal and emotional engagement, backed up by innovative control/operation and connectivity tech, excellent everyday usability and exceptional dynamic capability. This show-stealing spin-off from the classical sedan format is underpinned by BMW’s cutting-edge front-wheel-drive architecture and shares an array of technological developments with the recently unveiled new BMW 1 Series. Like its premium-compact stablemate, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe employs groudbreaking chassis technology and innovative control systems to raise the bar in terms of dynamics and agility.

Innovative traction control with ARB technology.
One feature of the new car’s technical armoury is the ARB (near-actuator wheel slip limitation) technology featured in the BMW i3s (electric power consumption combined: 14.6 – 14 kWh/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 0 g/km*). ARB uses a slip controller positioned directly in the engine control unit rather than in the control unit for the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system. Eliminating long signal paths means that information is relayed three times quicker, while the driver perceives wheel slip being brought under control up to ten times faster. This innovative traction control technology teams up with the likewise standard BMW Performance Control (yaw moment distribution) to deliver a direct and intense driving experience with both front-wheel drive and the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive of the BMW M235i xDrive (fuel consumption combined: 7.1 – 6.7 l/100 km [39.8 – 41.8 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 162 – 153 g/km**). The sporty range-topping model is fitted with the most powerful four-cylinder engine in the BMW Group line-up, producing 225 kW (306 hp). It also comes as standard with the newly developed mechanical Torsen limited-slip differential, which gives the car an even sportier edge by creating a locking effect between the front wheels.

Flamboyant lines and state-of-the-art connectivity.
The first ever BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe complements its elegantly sporty and extrovert lines with cutting-edge connectivity and generous levels of spaciousness. It therefore has all the ingredients to fuel the enthusiasm of new, design-led customers in urban areas for BMW’s hallmark driving pleasure. The BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been conceived as a global offering and represents an appealing addition to the model line-up, in particular in markets where the sedan body style enjoys strong popularity.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Model Range

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 model has been completely overhauled, making it better than ever, offering even more capability, strength and performance. But even this monumental progress wasn’t enough to satisfy the Ram engineering team, which is why they also pushed innovation, technology and refinement to entirely new heights, revolutionising the brand’s flagship vehicle in what is perhaps its most significant redesign ever.

The editors of Cars.com summed it up perfectly when they named the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 “Best of Show” at the 2018 North American International Auto Show, saying that “Ram has climbed to the top of the heap for its blend of capability, comfort, technology and efficiency.” Further proof of this is that the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 was the only truck to be named on Ward’s 2018 10 Best Interiors List alongside a short list of premium luxury vehicles.

Boasting countless segment-exclusive features in the specific areas most important to buyers and combining entirely new levels of interior luxury, comfort, technology, capability and functionality, these features make the Ram 1500 a dream come true for customers who now don’t have to make any compromise to drive a Ram truck.

Ground-breaking innovation

The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 delivers innovative state-of-the-art technology which, in addition to the Uconnect® includes multifunction type C USB ports that allow devices to be charged up to four times faster than standard USB outlets are included as standard and an integrated wireless charging pad is also available.

An innovative, highly advanced active noise cancellation system and acoustic glass reduce ambient sounds down to a low 67.1 db, making it the quietest Ram 1500 ever.

Manoeuvrability and parking are also made easier than ever before, thanks to the all-new 2019 Ram 1500’s available combination of ParkSense® front and rear parking sensors, Parkview® rear backup camera, blind spot and rear cross path detection, adaptive cruise control and, available for the first time on the all-new 2019 Ram 1500, a 360º surround view camera that gives a bird’s-eye perspective of the vehicle via four cameras positioned around the vehicle to create a fully stitched image.

The most luxurious truck ever

Offering the very highest levels of space and luxury including the most leather and real wood, the interior of the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 sets a standard that’s so high the rest of the segment will find it hard – if not impossible – to match in terms of design and quality.

An additional 4-inches (10 cm) has also been added to the cabin, giving rear seat passengers best-in-class legroom of 45.1-inches (1,146 mm), with the added luxury of ventilated rear seats that recline up to 8-degrees and a fold down rear seat centre console, even further enhancing comfort.

The cabin features interior storage totalling 151.1 litres and a reimagined centre console with 12 different storage configurations that offers never-before-seen customization, while other features, such as the exclusive lockable RamBox bedside storage, hidden bins and flat-load floor, offer totally unique solutions for cargo.

Exhilarating performance

Significantly, the Ram 1500’s tried and tested 5.7-litre HEMI® V8 doesn’t sound or feel like a V8 until you want it to. With the windows up on the highway, it runs crossover quiet, thanks in part to expanded active noise cancellation and cylinder deactivation.

To control the power, and with 18 percent more pad area, the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 features the largest front brake rotors in the segment at 14.9-inches (378 mm). A new electric parking brake replaces the previously foot operated parking brake, eliminating 20 pounds (9 kgs) and working jointly with the truck to identify when to automatically engage.

No compromise ride, handling and maximised fuel efficiency

The 2019 Ram 1500 offers class-leading ride and handling, which is delivered via a unique link-coil rear suspension system and an optional air suspension system that features five height settings for optimum ride and aerodynamic performance. In addition to an enhanced smooth ride, the air suspension also allows the driver – via a separate button on the key fob – to lower the truck, allowing easier passenger entry and reduced tailgate lift-over height.

The air suspension system adds up to 4-inches (102mm) of lift, offering best-in-class step-in height of 21-inches (533.4 mm), best-in-class ground clearance of 10.7-inches (271.78 mm), best-in-class departure angle of 27.8 degrees, and best-in-class breakover angle of 24.2 degrees supported by four-corner air springs that provide a cushioned, premium ride on-road and excellent capability off-road. Another benefit of the new air suspension is load-levelling capability, which automatically detects load on the suspension from a trailer or payload. The air pressure increases until the vehicle reaches normal ride height, levelling the vehicle and improving the loaded ride.

Another all-new feature – Frequency Response Damping (FRD) shocks – deliver the best combination of ride and handling. When the Ram 1500 experiences a slower input, common during cornering and heavy braking, the bypass valve is closed for more aggressive damping, which provides additional stability and poise. When driving normally or exposed to faster shock inputs – which is common on rough roads or at higher speeds – the valve opens to soften the damping, giving the driver more comfort, confidence and control.

For the all-new 2019 Ram 1500, the engineering team has made overall weight reductions totalling nearly 225 pounds (102 kgs) net compared to the previous model and have created the strongest Ram 1500 ever with the most efficient frame in the segment – 100 pounds (45.4 kgs) lighter with 98 percent high-strength steel to improve durability, weight and rigidity for improved handling.

Extensive wind tunnel testing honed the all-new 2019 Ram 1500’s exterior shape, resulting in continued best-in-class aerodynamics, plus exclusive active aerodynamics – grille shutters, air dam and air suspension – that help make the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 the segment’s most aerodynamic vehicle and maximise fuel efficiency. Its .357 coefficient of drag is 9% lower than the previous model and comparable to a regular sedan.

To further maximise fuel efficiency, the all-new 2019 Ram 1500 also features Fuel Saver Technology (cylinder deactivation), with the engine’s control computer turning off fuel and spark and closing the intake and exhaust valves on four of the engine’s eight cylinders during light load operation, such as highway cruising when full power is not needed.

The model features over 100 advanced safety and security features, (many as standard, some as available options depending on the model) including Electronic Roll Mitigation, multistage air bags, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, ParkSense® Parallel/Perpendicular Park Assist and ParkView® Rear back-up camera.

GCC customers also benefit from the Ram brand’s confidence in the quality and durability of its vehicles in the form of a comprehensive 5-year / 100,000 km manufacturer warranty and service package.

The 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie Sport is available to order at all Ram showrooms in the Middle East region.

The Audi RS 5 Sportback can now be ordered in the Middle East

Extended wheelbase, short overhangs and a long, wraparound engine hood with power dome: The progressive exterior design of the Audi RS 5 Sportback illustrates the model’s dynamics. A wide and flat Singleframe grille with quattro logo in matt black and massive air inlets with an RS-specific honeycomb structure adorn the front. An RS-typical diffuser insert, the RS exhaust system with oval tailpipes as well as a surface-mounted spoiler lip provide sporty accents at the rear.

The RS 5 Sportback comes standard with 19-inch forged wheels; 20-inch wheels are available as an option. Customers can customize the new Audi RS 5 Sportback with the gloss black, matt aluminum and carbon styling packages. The paint finish Sonoma green metallic is exclusive to the Audi RS 5.

Finished entirely in black, the interior of the new Audi RS 5 Sportback is richly and functionally equipped while offering space for five people. Details such as RS sport seats with optional honeycomb pattern in Fine Nappa leather and the flat-bottomed RS multifunction sport leather steering wheel underscore the sporty character of the five-door, high-performance coupé.

The inner values of the RS 5 Sportback also impress with power and efficiency. The 2.9 TFSI V6 biturbo engine produces 331 kW. Its maximum torque of 600 Nm is available between 1,900 and 5,000 rpm. The Audi RS 5 Sportback accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds on its way to an optional top speed of 280 km/h.

A sportily tuned eight-speed tiptronic with optimized gear changing transfers the power of the 2.9 TFSI to the quattro permanent all-wheel drive with self-locking center differential. It distributes the power to the axles asymmetrically (40:60), ensuring dynamic handling with optimal traction combined with the greatest possible safety. When slippage occurs on an axle, most of the power immediately flows to the other axle – up to 70% to the front, and up to 85% to the rear. This locking effect enables a clearly-defined torque distribution and precise cooperation with the control systems. The optional sport differential with RS-specific tuning ensures even more dynamic responsiveness when steering and accelerating. The system actively and selectively distributes the torque between the rear wheels.

Thanks to five-link front and rear suspensions, customers experience comfort and uncompromised sportiness. With the standard RS sport suspension, the RS 5 Sportback is seven millimeters (0.3 in) lower than the Audi S5 Sportback. Audi Sport also offers the RS sport suspension with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), ceramic brakes and dynamic steering with RS-specific tuning.

The Audi RS 5 Sportback can be ordered immediately and will be at dealerships in the Middle East from September 2019.

Six meticulous features that distinguish the all-new, three-row Cadillac XT6

Attention to detail is the mark of a luxury experience, so the 2020 Cadillac XT6 has been carefully curated to offer a refined ride and comfortable interior that elevate every drive.

“The interior environment is about simplicity, with an execution of premium materials,” said Andrew Smith, executive director, Cadillac Design. “We want the customer to focus on the experience —making each journey extraordinary.”

Some of design details in the XT6 are front and center, such as the exotic wood decor on the Premium Luxury model and the precision weave in the carbon fiber trim on the XT6 Sport model. Premium French seaming appears throughout the cabin, and perforations in the available ventilated front seats echo the shape of the Cadillac crest.

Finer details are woven into the fabric of the XT6’s functionality. They blend thoughtful design and clever engineering solutions to amplify the vehicle’s refinement, flexibility and comfort.

“The Cadillac XT6’s thoughtful details reveal themselves the longer you live with the car,” said John Plonka, XT6 chief engineer. “Our goal is to anticipate our customer’s needs for a refined, engaging ride, matched with an interior experience that provides a place of rejuvenation, connectivity and adaptability in all three rows.”

  1. A Dimensional Design That Foils Wear

A vehicle’s grille is literally and figuratively on the front line when it comes to appearance and wear. The XT6 Premium Luxury model stands up to tough road conditions with a bright grille finish created with a premium hot foil stamping process. The dimensional, foil-based finish is treated with a protective coating to make it more durable and easier to clean

  1. Spoiler Alert

Form and function blend seamlessly in the XT6’s rear spoiler. Its primary role is enhancing aerodynamic efficiency, but it also cleverly houses the rear window wiper and washer, as well as the available rearview mirror camera1 and wash. All are cleverly hidden beneath the spoiler’s trailing edge for a cleaner, smoother appearance — and an unobstructed rear view.

A hydrophobic coating on the XT6’s rear camera lenses helps resist mud, snow and spotting, a detail drivers will appreciate every time it rains or snows

  1. Seeing Clearly, Day or Night

The XT6 offers technologies to help support a clear, unobstructed view. The available Surround Vision camera system1 provides a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle, making tight maneuvers and obstacles easier to manage. The available Rear Camera Mirror1 provides a digital display that removes objects that could obstruct a traditional rear mirror view, such as passengers, headrests or the vehicle structure itself.

The available Night Vision1 system is designed to provide the driver with an infrared night vision image of the area beyond the headlamps that highlights and provides alerts when it detects pedestrians or large animals. The system provides additional alerts if the XT6 is approaching an identified pedestrian too quickly, potentially giving drivers more time to react

  1. A Place for Everything

The XT6’s first-row center console offers a convenient, lined and lit storage area with a dedicated phone compartment and standard wireless charging, a flocked change holder and cupholders with retractable lids. In the second row, the rear console drawer glides on metal rails for smooth operation and offers convenient storage space. Third-row storage includes individual cupholders and phone storage for both passengers.

The rear cargo area features underfloor storage with a clever cover that stays open in any position or at any angle for additional carrying capacity and easy loading — an elegant and thoughtful detail with immeasurable functionality.  The covered compartment in the floor of the XT6’s cargo area is perfect for stowing things out of sight.

three-row Cadillac XT6
  1. Breathe Easy

The available, next-generation air ionizer is designed to clean the XT6’s air by reducing airborne contaminants such as pollen and fine particulate matter. Cleaner air can make the drive more comfortable, particularly for those who suffer seasonal allergies.

  1. Safe Zone

Being a modern family crossover, the Cadillac XT6 offers the most comprehensive standard safety package in its class. It comes standard with seven airbags, including a roof rail-mounted head-curtain airbags for outboard positions of all three seating rows. It also gets an HD Rear Vision Camera with Remote Wash for impeccable visibility while reversing.

Other safety features include Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Front and Rear Park Assist, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Safety Alert Seat and Rear Seat Reminder. All in all, the XT6 is one of the safest vehicles in its class.
