Cyan Racing breaks two Nürburgring records

The 528-hp Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 20,143 seconds, averaging 170,4 km/h, with Thed Björk, the 2017 World Champion of touring car racing, behind the wheel.

“We continued our development of the car in torrential rain and scorching sunshine on the most fearsome circuit in the world,” said Thed Björk, driver in the WTCR for Lynk & Co Cyan Racing.

“The car is rewarding to drive no matter the conditions, be it the Nürburgring or the autobahn. The record that we achieved here is something I rank on the same level as my racing titles and a highlight in my part of transitioning development from race to road cars.”

The lap time is three seconds faster than the record for four-door cars, formerly held by Jaguar, and 25 seconds faster than the record for front-wheel driven cars, formerly held by Renault.

The race engineers and drivers of Cyan Racing, the official motorsport partner to Geely Group Motorsport, have developed the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept as a road car version of the race car run by the team in the World Touring Car Cup (WTCR).

The road car is developed by largely the same team that developed the previous concept cars of Cyan Racing, the 450-hp Volvo C30 Concept and the 508-hp Volvo S60 Concept.

“We continue to push past the boundaries and goals that we have set for the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept, a car that acts as a development platform for future Lynk & Co performance cars and parts,” said Henrik Fries, Head of Automotive R&D at Cyan Racing.

Cyan Racing

“While our main purpose for the many laps on the Nürburgring Nordschleife is development, the records that we broke are a true testament to the potential and capabilities of the Lynk & Co platform, as well as our engineering philosophy from more than two decades of motorsport and road car performance.”

Development of the Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept will continue throughout the last part of the year, with the team turning attention to winter testing in the north of Sweden as part of creating a performance car for all roads, all seasons and all conditions.

The 7:20.143 lap record was set using the full 20,832km circuit layout as per the official Nürburgring standard and not the shorter 20,600km version as often used by other manufacturers. The Lynk & Co 03 Cyan Concept lapped the shorter version of the circuit in 7:15.123.

Cyan Racing also holds the lap record for the fastest ever front-wheel driven race car with the 2017 World Title-winning Volvo S60 Cyan TC1 – lapping the Nordschleife + GP circuit in 8:34.813, as well as previously holding the lap record for four-door road cars with the Volvo S60 Concept in 2016 with the time 7:51.110 on the 20,832km circuit.

Celebrating 20 years of the Porsche 911 GT3

The unveiling of the first Porsche 911 GT3 in March 1999 at the Geneva Motor Show signalled the start of a new era for discerning sports car drivers. More than any other Porsche 911, the GT3 embodies the hallmarks of Porsche Motorsport. Developed by two-time World Rally Champion Walter Röhrl, race engineer Roland Kussmaul and the Porsche Motorsport specialists from Weissach, the Porsche 911 GT3 brought race track agility to the road. Since then, this athlete has become faster, more precise and more dynamic with every generation. With a naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, it remains the most popular Porsche 911 among purists to date. Around 80 per cent of all 911 GT3 ever produced are regularly driven on race tracks across the globe.

The race versions of the Porsche 911 GT3 have written motorsport history. In addition to countless class wins, the GT3 achieved numerous overall victories in major endurance races, including the 24 Hours of Spa, the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 24 Hours Nürburgring, which it has won seven times since 2000. One of the main success contributors is the fact that innovations and experience gained from motorsport are incorporated into the development of the road versions.

Successor to the 911 Carrera RS 2.7: the first GT3 made its debut in 1999

Featuring advanced racing technology, the Porsche 911 GT3 continued the tradition that had started in the 1970s with the legendary 911 Carrera RS 2.7. For the first time, the model was not given the designation “RS” for Race Sport, but the name GT3, directly referencing the GT class in which the motorsport versions were to compete. The water-cooled 3.6-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivered 360 hp (265 kW). As such, it was hardly a surprise that the Porsche 911 GT3 had already earned its first laurels before its debut in Geneva. With Walter Röhrl at the wheel, the new model completed the 20.8 kilometre Nürburgring Nordschleife in less than eight minutes, setting a new benchmark for street-legal sports cars.

Such exceptional performance was made possible not just by the race-proven boxer engine, but also thanks to a precisely tuned overall package: the chassis was lowered by around 30 millimetres and the brakes uprated. The six-speed manual transmission originated from the Porsche 911 GT2. The gearbox ratios, axle geometry, anti-roll bars and springs could be adapted depending on the circuit conditions. Lightweight construction came before comfort. A distinctive sign of its motorsport origins was the fixed rear wing of the 911 GT3. As an option, customers were able to order their 911 GT3 as a Clubsport variant, which also included a built-in roll cage.

The first Porsche 911 GT3 vehicles rolled off the production line in Weissach in May 1999. The new model provided the foundation for the successful race versions 911 GT3 Cup, 911 GT3 R and GT3 RSR.

Porsche 911 GT3

New generations in quick succession

After the great success of the first 911 GT3, Porsche presented a new evolution stage of the street-legal sports car with racing genes every three to four years. In 2003, the power of the boxer engine increased to 381 hp (280 kW), thanks to the use of the VarioCam, the variable camshaft control system. The GT3 was now also available with ultra-high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). The next increase in power to 415 hp (305 kW) followed three years later. For the first time, the Porsche 911 GT3 featured the sporty Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). In 2009, engineers increased the displacement of the six-cylinder boxer engine to 3.8-litres and the power to 435 hp (320 kW). The all-new rear wing and full underbody panelling produced a substantial increase in downforce (almost double in comparison to its predecessor).

On the 50th birthday of the Porsche 911 in 2013, the fifth generation of the 911 GT3 celebrated its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show, with a completely new engine, transmission, body and chassis. The drivetrain consisted of a 3.8-litre naturally aspirated engine with 475 hp (350 kW), featuring active rear axle steering and a dual-clutch transmission (Porsche Doppelkupplung, PDK), for the first time. The model completed the Nürburgring Nordschleife in just 7:25 minutes —more than half a minute faster than the first ever 911 GT3 back in 1999.

The latest version of the 911 GT3 was launched in 2017. The focus of development had been on the six-cylinder boxer engine: its displacement increased to 4.0 litres and the power output is 500 hp (368 kW). Customers can choose between a manual six-speed transmission and PDK. In addition, a Touring Package is available which replaces the fixed rear wing with an automatically extending spoiler.

THE CAR THAT RESPONDS TO YOUR MOOD: NEW JAGUAR LAND ROVER TECH HELPS REDUCE STRESS

Jaguar Land Rover is researching new artificial intelligence (AI) technology to understand our state of mind while driving – and adjust cabin settings to improve driver wellbeing.

The technology uses a driver-facing camera and biometric sensing to monitor and evaluate the driver’s mood and adapt a host of cabin features, including the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, media and ambient lighting. The settings will be altered in response to the driver’s facial expressions to help tackle stress. Reports suggest 74 per cent of us admit to feeling stressed or overwhelmed every day*.

The mood-detection system will use the latest AI techniques to continually adapt to nuances in the driver’s facial expressions and implement appropriate settings automatically. In time the system will learn a driver’s preference and make increasingly tailored adjustments.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER

Personalisation settings could include changing the ambient lighting to calming colours if the system detects the driver is under stress, selecting a favourite playlist if signs of weariness are identified, and lowering the temperature in response to yawning or other signs of tiring.

Jaguar Land Rover is also trialling similar technology for rear passengers, with a camera mounted in the headrest. If the system detects signs of tiredness, it could dim the lights, tint the windows and raise the temperature in the back, to help an occupant get to sleep.

Dr Steve Iley, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Medical Officer, said: “As we move towards a self-driving future, the emphasis for us remains as much on the driver as it ever has.

“By taking a holistic approach to the individual driver, and implementing much of what we’ve learnt from the advances in research around personal wellbeing over the last 10 or 15 years, we can make sure our customers remain comfortable, engaged and alert behind the wheel in all driving scenarios, even monotonous motorway journeys.”

The new mood–detection system is one of a suite of technologies that Jaguar Land Rover is exploring as part of its ‘tranquil sanctuary’ vision to improve the driving experience. Designed to create a sanctuary inside each of its luxury vehicles, the manufacturer is trialling a wide range of driver and passenger wellbeing features, to ensure occupants are as comfortable as possible whilst ensuring the driver remains mindful, alert and in control.

Mood-detection software is the next-generation of Jaguar Land Rover’s existing driver tracking technology. The Driver Condition Monitor, which is capable of detecting if a driver is starting to feel drowsy and will give an early warning to take a break, is available on all Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles.

Andrea Baldi, The CEO of Automobili Lamborghini EMEA, said: “High performance cars and motorsport are both very popular in the Middle East, which is why this region represents the ideal location for this innovative championship. It will be the perfect platform for fans of speed, power and luxury to satisfy their passion. The Urus ST-X embodies the true spirit of Lamborghini, and provides the ultimate performance in high-end luxurious design – this car will disrupt the racing industry as we know it.”

Aesthetically, the Urus ST-X Concept is characterised by the matt Verde Mantis (green) livery in addition to the hood in visible carbon fibre. Larger air intakes optimise the cooling of the V8 twin-turbo engine which is capable of delivering 650 hp (478 kW) and 850 Nm of torque. The overall look is completed by the rear wing, the lateral racing exhausts with a new hexagonal design, and 21” single-nut aluminium alloy wheels fitted with Pirelli tires.

The development of the racing configuration has also led to a 25% weight reduction compared with the production model. The light weight, along with the raised set-up and torsional stiffening provided by a roll cage integrated in the frame, contribute to making the Urus ST-X Concept a race car for track and off-road use without compromise. Its track debut will take place during the 2019 Lamborghini World Finals.

DBX: PROTOTYPE OF ASTON MARTIN’S FIRST SUV BEGINS TESTING

Aston Martin has made a significant and symbolic stride towards the luxury brand’s first SUV – now officially confirmed as being named DBX – with the first development prototype being put through its paces along a demanding Welsh Rally stage in the hands of the company’s Chief Engineer, Matt Becker.

This first test for DBX signifies the start of an extensive testing programme. One that has begun in Wales, as a nod to Aston Martins’ new St Athan production facility in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Though simulation is an essential part of DBX’s early development phase, this first prototype drive in Wales signifies the start of ‘real world’ testing, in which the SUV will be subjected to a punishing regime that will ultimately see development prototypes of the all-new machine tackle some of the world’s harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahnen and Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The unique nature of DBX in the Aston Martin range means it requires a dedicated test programme; one that features new processes, procedures and standards that reflect its all-purpose role. So, while it will perform with the verve and poise of a true Aston Martin, its dynamic envelope has to extend into areas previously off-limits to the marque’s sporting roots. Naturally this includes impressive multi-terrain and towing capabilities as befits a state-of-the-art SUV.

Speaking of his drive in the DBX development prototype, Aston Martin Chief Engineer, Matt Becker, said: ‘We have already developed and tuned DBX in the driving simulator, which has enabled us to make excellent progress in advance of the first physical prototype cars being available. Still, it’s always a big day when you get to put the first actual miles on an early prototype and I’m delighted with the near perfect correlation between the simulator and this prototype. As an engineer, it’s genuinely exciting to get a feel for the car you’re working to create. DBX is a very different kind of Aston Martin, but we will be testing it in all conditions and across all terrains to ensure it delivers a driving experience worthy of the wings badge’

DBX is scheduled to be unveiled in the last quarter of 2019 and will be built at Aston Martin Lagonda’s St Athan facility; a state-of-the-art luxury manufacturing plant that will ultimately become the ‘Home of Electrification’ when the marque’s fully-EV models enter production.

Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group Chief Executive Officer, Andy Palmer said: “Seeing a DBX development prototype in action is a momentous chapter in the story of our first SUV, for it is the moment it really comes alive. DBX is so much more than ‘just’ an SUV; it will be the first model built at our brand-new facility in St Athan. As such, it is very much the start of a bold new era in the company’s long history.”

Ford F-150 - Arab Motor World

With class-leading power, smart technology and unrivaled capability and safety features, the Ford F-150 is built to take anything the Middle East can throw at it.

The 2018 F-150 is the distillation of more than 100 years of truck development and the refinement of 42 years of F-Series leadership, making it the toughest, smartest and most capable F-150 ever. It’s also the safest, with the inclusion of Ford’s new Co-Pilot 360’s suite of driver assist technologies.

Building on its proven heritage, the F-150 is available with a choice of three engines, three cabin styles, and three bed lengths. It comes with muscular styling, segment-first and class-exclusive driver assist technologies and even more features that allow owners to explore the great outdoors with unwavering confidence. Customer research shows that buyers bank on the F-150’s reputation for power and safety – and it’s in these areas that this Built Ford Tough truck continues to lead.

All-new Co-Pilot 360

Co-Pilot 360 is a package of technologies that help keep drivers, occupants and even pedestrians more protected than ever before. New Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection monitors the F-150’s proximity to other vehicles and pedestrians up front and will alert the driver with visible and audible warnings. In extreme cases, and if the system determines a collision is imminent, active braking may automatically apply full braking.

Blind Spot information system, or BLIS®, uses radar to identify a vehicle entering the blind spot and alerts the driver with an indicator light in the side-view mirror. Its range can be extended to include a conventional trailer once programmed into the system. Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) can warn drivers of traffic approaching from either side when the truck is backing out of a parking space. It uses the same radar sensors as BLIS and automatically engages when the driver selects reverse.

The toughest, most powerful F-150 ever

Based on its proven chassis – the strongest ever developed for the F-150 – and class-exclusive all-aluminium body, the 2018 truck’s standard, all-new 3.3-litre Ti-VCT V6 engine delivers where it matters most, with higher towing capability, more payload capacity and better fuel efficiency than the engine it replaces. The engine comes fitted with a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with standard auto-start/stop technology.

The 3.3-litre engine is joined by an enhanced version of the trusted and proven 5.0-litre Ti-VCT V8. Fed by a new dual-injection system which, when coupled with a higher compression ratio and upgraded main and connecting rod bearings for greater durability, sees the V8 produce an impressive 395 horsepower and 542Nm torque.

The second generation 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine remains the best choice for those who need to balance outright performance with ultimate fuel efficiency. Paired with the 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, engine torque is instantly available for exceptional low-end and peak performance. With class-leading 637Nm torque on hand, the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6-powered F-150 is equipped to handle heavy loads, tow loaded trailers and tackle the region’s toughest terrain. Properly equipped, the truck has a class-topping tow capacity of almost six tonnes.

The FX4 Off Road package is available on XL to Platinum models and is designed to give the F-150 even more capability off road. The package includes a lock rear differential, underbody skid plates that protect the front differential, transfer case and fuel tank, Hill Descent Control and off-road tuned shock absorbers. Drivers can also monitor the action via the truck’s productivity screen.

Convenience, at the press of a button

The F-150 is built to work, and the cargo box is designed to make that easier for owners. The new tailgate features a rugged F-150 stamping on all models from XL to King Ranch, and the tailgate can be locked, unlocked and lowered via the key fob. The class-exclusive tailgate step and support make accessing the cargo box easy, while LED lights illuminate the area efficiently. Owners can also add class-exclusive LED sideview mirror spotlights to help illuminate camp sites at night.

Class-exclusive stowable loading ramps are available to help make loading ATVs, motorcycles and other equipment easy, while Ford’s BoxLink features four removable and lockable premium cleats provide additional tie-down points to help secure loads.

World-class sound quality and connectivity

A new B&O Play Premium Audio System by HARMAN is available, unlocking the power of your favourite music through the tailored tuning and calibration of ten strategically placed speakers around the cabin. Ford’s SYNC 3 system allows hands-free control of calls, music and more, while the eight-inch screen provides bold, clear and precise information. SYNC 3 is also Apple CarPlay compatible, meaning iPhone users can use Siri’s functions to access favourite songs and playlists, and Apple Maps for voice-guided navigation. There are also two smart-charging USB ports to help keep your devices powered up and ready to go, and a power outlet for heavy duty tools and devices in the dash.
