Hyundai Motor unveils future design direction at Geneva Motor Show

Hyundai has provided a glimpse of its future design direction, showing its latest concept car, ’Le Fil Rouge’, at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show. The concept’s French-language name translates as ‘common thread’. While it marks a new beginning for Hyundai design, the name is a reflection of Hyundai’s belief that the brand’s past, present and future designs are all connected.

“‘Le Fil Rouge’ is a re-interpretation of Hyundai’s design DNA that originated from the brand’s historical Hyundai Coupe Concept in 1974,” said Luc Donckerwolke, Executive Vice President and head of Hyundai Design Center. “Building on our long history of creating distinctive and sporty character in vehicles, we will open a new era for Hyundai design.”

“Our goal is to build a beloved brand by creating vehicles with heightened emotional value to reshape the landscape of car design. This is the foundation of our concept,” added Sang-yup Lee, Head of Hyundai Styling.

The new concept is an introduction to the brand’s latest approach in design: the ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ theme will be embodied by all future Hyundai vehicles, ranging from sedans to SUVs. The goal of this new theme is to bring instinctive beauty, creating emotional value and desirability in Hyundai vehicles. The design mission is defined by the harmony between four fundamental elements: proportion, architecture, styling and technology.

Proportion

‘Le Fil Rouge’ creates a proportional character based on the golden-ratio – a common mathematical ratio found in nature – which enabled Hyundai designers to create an aesthetically pleasing, natural-looking composition that embodies charisma. Proportional uniqueness is achieved through a long wheel base, large wheels and short overhangs. A respectful dash-to-axle – the distance from front wheel center to base of windshield – provides a comfortable driving position, whilst a higher beltline completes the overall look.

Architecture

With ‘Le Fil Rouge’, Hyundai took a new approach called ‘Light Architecture’, to integrate a progressive identity into the brand’s design heritage. Light Architecture generates a dynamic look and forward motion effect for the vehicle. The front and the rear pillars as well as the roof are seamlessly blended into the overarching silhouette of the car – as though the car is drawn with a single line.

The exterior and interior are smoothly merged by the ‘Tube Architecture’, keeping the exterior’s sensuous and sporty character consistent inside the vehicle. The Tube Architecture’s principle is to create the same emotional value inside and outside the vehicle, while also allowing for a lightweight profile.

The interior design differentiates between the needs of both the driver and passengers. The front passenger seat maximises comfort even on long-distance trips with more ample leg room, while the driver’s seat is designed to add to the fun on driving with optimised ergonomics. A wrap-around architecture emphasises depth, creating a calm, spacious and comfortable travel environment for everyone in the car.

Styling

Another goal of the team was to create a vehicle that is instantly recognisable as a Hyundai from a distance. This was achieved by creating a sensuous tension on the side through a harmonious blend of layered crisp lines and pure volumes. Concave and convex forms are carefully orchestrated to provide a sexy character. The concept’s distinctive ambience is also recognisable with a wide, layered front hood, combined with a further enhanced Cascading Grille. The next level of the Cascading Grille comes with a three-dimensional treatment, featuring parametric jewels inside, which gives the vehicle a commanding presence.

Technology

A core design principle for Hyundai designers was to create a design that enables a seamless experience of function. Inspired by aircraft ventilation, a two-way air ventilation system blows air over the curved surface of lightweight tube architecture. Revitalised wood and high-tech fabrics are used extensively throughout and sculpted into exquisite, sensuous forms. This evokes natural beauty with an emotional touch to add an airy feel to vehicle. Meanwhile, a panoramic floating display coupled with haptic technology sits in front of the driver, providing access to intuitive controls for climate control and other vehicle configurations.

Fiat at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show

At the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the Fiat brand is exhibiting its range with a display that is wider and more complete than ever, featuring the S-Design and Mirror families, which offer solutions to the most advanced requirements in terms of style, personality and connectivity.

The Geneva Motor Show will see the début of the 124 Spider S-Design, alongside the 5-door Tipo and the 500X S-Design, all vehicles with very different characteristics and dedicated to those who like to express their own dynamic character by choosing a car with a distinctive identity.

The S-Design is indeed Fiat’s answer to those who seek style and content with a contemporary, dynamic and distinctive character. In this trim, the vehicle is a combination of sportiness, style and seduction, capable of winning over motorists at first glance. It has an unmistakable personality that reflects that of young, dynamic consumers. For the very first time, a special series carries across the Fiat model range and makes a perfect match for both of the worlds embodied by the brand – the functional and emotional sides of Fiat.

But in Geneva, Fiat is not just all about S-Design. An area of the stand will also host the Mirror family, the first special series to embrace the entire 500 family. Fiat’s special series have always been a unique feature of the brand, one of the keys to the success of many models across the Fiat range and, above all, that of the iconic Fiat 500, a vehicle that comes in a host of versions, and has explored the most diverse territories, so further prolonging its unique, eternal youth. Throughout its long history, some of the most memorable versions are the 500C by Gucci, the 500 by Diesel, the 500 Riva and the recent 500-60th and Anniversary editions, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the icon of the house of Fiat.

Since its launch, Fiat 500 has broken every rule in the book of the traditional market, showing that even a small vehicle can generate a family of affordable and attractive models capable of guaranteeing maximum levels of personality and functionality and become a resounding international success as well. Eighty percent of all the Fiat 500 vehicles produced are sold outside Italy and in 2017 the Fiat icon was the leading car in eight countries worldwide, also making the leaderboard in another seven nations.

With the 500L and 500X versions, Fiat 500 moves away from traditional segment classification, combining characteristics from different categories and breathing life into two vehicles that are benchmarks in their respective segments. In this way, the 500 family offers three very diverse vehicles in terms of usage and personality, which meet the requirements of all customers and the rising demand for new experiences, while continuing to share the same original and characteristic exciting style of the Fiat icon.

And indeed style, along with technology, are undoubtedly the highlights of the new Mirror special series – available across the entire 500 family – thanks to the 7-inch HD Live Uconnect radio with high-resolution touchscreen, and to the range’s Apple CarPlay integration and Android Auto compatibility, which make the driving experience an all-round life experience for the motorist to enjoy in total safety.

So, with the Mirror and S-Design families, the Fiat brand meets the latest needs of the market and offers every customer the chance to express their own identity also through the vehicle they drive.

Completing the Fiat stand is a wide array of accessories and products developed and designed by Mopar to personalise every vehicle.

Fiat stand

The stand in Geneva is all set to welcome visitors with typical Italian elegance and style. It is a brand-new exhibition space that captures the forms and meets the requirements of contemporary design. At this year’s International Motor Show, the Fiat models will also be joined by Abarth vehicles, underlining the link between the two brands. The two worlds will maintain their respective characteristic traits and be displayed in easily identifiable areas of the stand that are separate but adjoining, with no clear dividing lines.

Fluidity and dynamic flair mark and identify the two areas but without creating obstacles, and the multimedia contents visible from every angle of the stand are designed to draw visitors in, engaging and virtually transporting them on a journey through the worlds of Fiat and Abarth.

There will also be a dedicated area in which visitors can get up close to the world of original accessories developed by Mopar®, in partnership with the Fiat brand. The new unique colour scheme of the alloy wheel rims available in 11 different shades is particularly notable, and this is one of the elements with which Mopar further expands the concept of tailoring, an element typical of Italian tradition, applying it to the automotive world to offer the motorist countless possibilities to customise their vehicle.

Alfa Romeo at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show

Alfa Romeo cars have been delighting motorists for 108 years with their Italian style, which evokes performance, technology and driving pleasure just waiting to be unleashed at a turn of the ignition key.

This year, visitors to the Geneva International Motor Show will clearly see that the brand has further evolved towards more extreme performance, exclusiveness and the opportunity for owners to customise their Alfa Romeo with care and a choice of details reserved for top fashion houses. The distinctive features of a tailored garment are all present in the mechanical creations displayed in Geneva – Stelvio, Giulia, 4C Spider and 4C Coupé are sure to fascinate enthusiasts and onlookers with their new looks, some focused on performance and others on premium materials, also through exquisite special series.

All eyes will be on the exciting Nürburgring Edition of Stelvio Quadrifoglio sporting the “NRING” badge, of which 108 will be made, one for each year of the history of Alfa Romeo. This is not just a car – it is the tangible expression of invention, hard work and dedication, the secret to achieving the most ambitious goals and smashing enduring records, and also expressing an almost sensual pleasure in the result attained. The special Nürburgring Edition sporting the “NRING” badge celebrates the SUV capable of doing a lap of the legendary circuit in 7 minutes 51.7 seconds, the fastest time ever in its class.

Quadrifoglio – one word is enough to identify a car in a class of its own – one that defies all normal categorisation. This applies to both Stelvio and Giulia, which are ready to stun the public in Geneva and continue to seduce, on a daily basis, the 108 lucky owners of the special Nürburgring Edition, sporting the “NRING” badge, through, for example, the 510 hp 2.9-litre V6 Twin-Turbo engine, the Torque Vectoring differential and Chassis Domain Control (CDC) that characterise these models, in addition to a specific livery, a prestigious name and details that together contribute to make them supreme examples of Alfa Romeo excellence.

It’s no coincidence that these two outstanding cars bear the name of the famous German circuit: Alfa Romeo cars started to record victories at the Nürburgring in the 1930s, in the hands of world class drivers such as Tazio Nuvolari, who won the German Grand Prix at the wheel of a 8C 2300 Tipo Monza in 1932 and a Tipo B-P3 in 1935. Other memorable years were 1966, when the Giulia Sprint GTA became the first GT to make it round the ‘Ring in under ten minutes, and 1975, when the 33 TT 12 driven by Arturo Merzario triumphed in Germany before going on to win the World Sportscar Championship. Last but not least, on June 10, 1993, Nicola Larini’s 155 V6 Ti won both heats of the most prestigious race of the “DTM” championship, held on the Nürburgring circuit. The Italian driver repeated Nuvolari’s feat by winning the race with a crushing victory over the other cars, all of them German.

Racing track thrills will be found in the Quadrifoglio area, where the Stelvio and Giulia Nürburgring Editions, proudly sporting the NRING” badge, celebrate the records scored by the two models, and continue in the space dedicated to Giulia Veloce Ti and Stelvio Super with Sport Pack, the new Performance Pack and new leather dashboard and door panels. Both cars are equipped with Q4 all-wheel drive. The more elegant personality of the brand is expressed by the Luxury Pack on Stelvio and Giulia, while its sporty, bespoke spirit is embodied by the 4C range, with the “Competizione” and “Italia” special editions created for Coupé and Spider.
