PIRELLI OPENS P ZERO WORLD IN DUBAI

THE FOURTH TYRE BOUTIQUE AND THIRD CONTINENT FOR THIS UNIQUE SHOP CONCEPT

PIRELLI’S DUBAI FLAGSHIP STORE ALSO HOSTS THE ‘TRACK EXPERT’: A SPECIALIST IN CIRCUIT DRIVING

P Zero World reaches its third continent: after Los Angeles, Munich and Monte-Carlo, the latest flagship store has opened in Dubai. This bespoke symbol of Pirelli’s retail strategy – and its leading position in the market – now makes its mark in a key territory that links the Middle East with the rest of the world. A parade of more than 60 supercars belonging to fans and local collectors celebrated the opening of the new store, having first paraded through the city, while the following day more than 200 cars took to the track at Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi for the P Zero Experience: Pirelli’s own brand of track day.

The P Zero World concept has often been summarised as a ‘boutique for tyres’: in other words, a shop where customers can find Pirelli’s most exclusive products alongside services dedicated to the exotic worlds of luxury and sports cars. The P Zero World boutiques are the only places where the entire range of Pirelli tyres is available, such as the P Zero Trofeo R – the road-homologated tyre with the highest performance levels of the entire range – or the Pirelli Collezione for collectors’ cars: designed to combine classic looks with modern performance.

Naturally, the entire range of Pirelli products is available to customers, including motorbike tyres and Velo tyres, as well as Pirelli Design accessories. The exclusive services available to customers of the new P Zero World in Dubai include car valeting and courtesy cars. But not only that: P Zero World allows people to immerse themselves in the world of Pirelli, from the images symbolising the world’s most famous calendar, to the multi-coloured display of F1 tyres.

This underlines Pirelli’s strategy that is focussed on premium and prestige products: an area of the market that shows constant growth, where the Italian firm has been able to gain a solid leadership recognised by both customers and carmakers. In numbers, this means that Pirelli supplies more than half the world’s prestige cars with original equipment. So more than one out of every two supercars leaves the factory on Pirelli tyres, while the Italian firm has also taken 20% of the premium market, confirming its leadership of the entire high value sector.

WHY DUBAI?

Dubai, at the centre of the United Arab Emirates, has been an important commercial and transport hub throughout history, which has always made it one of the most open places to influences and trends from the rest of the world in the Middle East. It’s no coincidence that in 2020 Dubai will host Expo: the world exhibition that will attract 25 million tourists. In Dubai, there’s a huge passion for cars, making it the second-most important car market for the whole of the Gulf, behind only Saudi Arabia. The United Arab Emirates are at the centre of the Middle Eastern car market, a region that expects a yearly growth of 4-5% in luxury cars over the next few years.

Proof of this overriding passion can even be seen in Dubai’s police force, which boasts a supercar fleet that any car collector would be proud of: including a Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari FF, Bentley Continental GT, McLaren 12C and Audi R8. Some of these police cars took part in the parade of 60 supercars that marked the opening of Dubai’s P Zero World. W Motors, the first Arab hypercar company, is also active in Dubai, with a Pirelli-equipped Fenyr SuperSport a highlight of the opening of P Zero World. The CEO of W Motors, Ralph R. Debbas, was an honoured guest at the opening, representing a visionary and exclusive constructor shaping the future mobility in the region. An Aston Martin Zagato was additionally on display. For the famed Italian coachbuilder, Zagato, Dubai was the start of celebrations to mark its centenary, as P Zero World was opened.

So it’s no surprise that in Dubai – and in the United Arab Emirates in general – this passion for sports cars goes hand in hand with clear and precise choices from motorists. When it comes to tyres, homologations and marked tyres have an important strategic importance in this market, where the tendency from supercar owners is to buy marked tyres whenever a change is needed: in other words, tyres that have been designed specifically for the cars they are fitted to. It’s a choice that is at the heart of a strategy Pirelli calls the ‘Perfect Fit’, where the Italian firm is market leader.

The markings on the tyres signify that they have been specifically made for a particular model of car, with different symbols indicating different constructors. These tyres are born thanks a shared development programme between Pirelli and the carmakers in question that lasts for around 2-3 years and results in tyres that are precisely tailored to the cars they are destined for. This forms a fundamental guarantee for the owners of these cars that they will be able to obtain the maximum in terms of performance and handling, which characterise the fundamental design of the car.

CAFFÈ ITALIANO AND TRACK EXPERT

The P Zero World shop in Dubai is housed in a new 600-metre square building (split between the showroom and workshop) featuring 5 technicians, 2 salespeople and a receptionist. There are four ramps where tyre maintenance can be carried out, using state of the art of machinery. These include the most modern lasers to align wheels, and completely automatic tyre mounting equipment that requires no human intervention and guarantees a perfect job, thanks to technology that ensures no wheel rims are ever damaged.

Furthermore, P Zero World in Dubai is equipped with one of the quickest balancing machines out there that is able to rapidly solve elusive problems, such as vibrations through the steering wheel, that traditional systems cannot identify.

While they wait for work to be carried out, customers can entertain themselves with a life-size Formula 1 simulator and enjoy a real Italian coffee, courtesy of P Zero World, while the technicians look after the car. A ‘Track Expert’ is also at every customer’s disposal, ready to give advice about car set-up and tyre management, as well as specific suggestions when it comes to track driving.

Gaetano Trezza, Pirelli’s Head of Trade & Operative Marketing, said: “Pirelli’s retail strategy is focussed on points of sale activation, in collaboration with partners who are already active on site.

This is certainly the case in Dubai with our distributor Al Hawai, which has worked exclusively with Pirelli for 32 years. Consequently we can rely on a loyal customer base, but above all on the reliability and skill of companies with a passion for our job. P Zero World is the jewel in the crown of this strategy, where clients can discover our brand, exclusive products, and services at the highest level in a unique context. Furthermore, customers get the chance to find out more about our partner brands, which helps us to create an atmosphere that sets P Zero World apart from any other tyre facility. Next up is the opening of P Zero World in Melbourne, Australia.”

Continental Commissions First Driverless Tyre Test Vehicle

Continental-Commissions-First-Driverless-Tyre-Test-Vehicle-
  • Newly developed tyres are being tested under real life conditions to ensure premium quality

  • Automation allows for improved processes and more conclusive results

  • Driverless tyre tests based on prototypes of Continental’s automated Cruising Chauffeur

Continental, the premium German tyre and technology company, has commissioned the first driverless tyre test vehicle, using pioneering technology based on the company’s automated Cruising Chauffeur. Launched at the Continental test site in Texas, USA, the innovative system will see newly developed tyres being tested under real life conditions across a wide range of road surface, making test results for Continental’s passenger and light truck tyres more conclusive to ensure premium quality.

Controlled through a satellite-based navigation system, the new test vehicle is equipped with camera and radar sensors allowing the vehicle to react immediately to people, animals, or other unexpected objects on the road without a driver. This contributes to making Continental’s Vision Zero strategy for accident-free driving a reality.

Nicolai Setzer, Continental Executive Board member and Head of Tyre Division said, “In critical situations, the tyres’ level of technology is the deciding factor in whether a vehicle brakes in time. With tyre tests which use an automated vehicle, we achieve highly conclusive test results and thereby ensure the premium quality of our tyres.”

Continental-Commissions-First-Driverless-Tyre-Test-Vehicle2

Driving test vehicles places huge demands on the drivers and the smallest deviations on the test track can have a huge impact on the quality and comparability of the test results. Therefore, newly developed rubber compounds and tyre models will be tested under real life conditions to show just how well they perform on different road surfaces.

In addition to the significantly improved comparability of the results, the tyre test using automated vehicles will also reduce the maintenance work required for the test tracks as there will be less route variations.

Thomas Sych, Head of Tyre Testing at Continental, commented, “We want to automate and standardise tyre tests to such an extent that we can identify even the smallest differences in the tyres. The automated vehicle enables us to reproduce processes precisely, meaning that every tyre in the test experiences exactly the same conditions. This way, we can ensure that differences in the test are actually caused by the tyres and not by the test procedure.”

“Thanks to close collaboration with colleagues from many different areas of Continental, we have made a lot of progress with our prototype for the tyre test. Our focus now is on further developing the necessary camera and radar systems for this special case of off-road routes,” explains Sych.

Automated vehicles are not new for Continental. As far back as 50 years ago, Continental was already doing groundbreaking work in preparing for the future of mobility. The company’s engineers developed an electronically controlled car to automate tyre tests 50 years ago when the vehicle followed a wire that was glued to the track, which limited its use to asphalt test tracks. Today’s prototype can also safely navigate along gravel roads without a driver.

Cutting-Edge Technology Powers Continental’s Augmented Reality Head-up Display

Waveguide-Technology-Data
  • New waveguide technology enables large-area augmentation in the driver’s field of view

  • Shifting from mirrors to innovative waveguide technology makes it possible to integrate an AR-HUD in many vehicle cockpits for the first time

  • Continental builds a full-colour demonstrator to show the ultra-compact waveguide HUD’s potential

Waveguide-Technology-Data-02

Continental, the premium German tyre and technology company, has revealed an industry-first full-colour demonstrator of an automotive-specific Augmented Reality Head-up Display (AR-HUD). Based on waveguide technology, the demonstrator is the result of a joint partnership with DigiLens Inc., one of the world’s leading experts in projection technology.

HUDs with graphic augmentations in a real-world view offer intuitive support to drivers who will immediately understand where their attention is required and why. For instance, virtual turn-by-turn navigation signs on the road make driving safer and easier. During automated driving, an AR-HUD can make the “sensing” and “planning” of the vehicle more transparent.

“Head-up Displays, particularly those with large-area augmentation, provide optimum driver support. Thanks to our early investment into waveguide technology, we are now taking a big step forward towards ultra-compact AR-HUDs. We have successfully overcome the most challenging obstacle which is the instrument size. As a result, industrialising this technology in the vehicle is now within reach,” said Dr. Frank Rabe, Head of the Continental business unit Instrumentation & Driver HMI.

Flat waveguides replace mirror technology

Up until very recently, AR-HUD development was still generally based on mirror technology, like in the windscreen HUD. However, what works well in the HUD is not an option for the AR-HUD, because the display area of a conventional HUD is small by comparison.

“Most vehicles simply do not offer a large amount of space. That was clear from day one, and that is why we wanted a different solution in order to be able to offer the AR-HUD benefits to as many drivers as possible,” said Dr. Pablo Richter, Principal Expert Optical Technologies at Continental.

That is also why Continental entered into a strategic partnership with the waveguide HUD expert DigiLens in 2016 and increased this participation in 2018. The joint development work has now produced the first full-colour demonstrator, which uses three flat waveguides stacked over one another to create the RGB colour space – and no mirrors.

“The light rays from the projector enter the multi-layer waveguide from underneath. They get folded inside the waveguide and are finally projected upwards to create the virtual image through reflection on the windscreen,” Richter explained. “One of the many challenges was that while our development partner had produced solutions for the helmet visors of pilots or motorcycle drivers, the large-area application to a windscreen takes the technology to a whole different dimension.”

Continental´s demonstrator enables augmentations within a field of 2,60 metres x 0,87 metres at a projection distance of 10 metres and solves the previous size issue of the AR-HUD. Over the course of ongoing development, further necessary requirements to the vehicle application will be met individually.

MICHELIN INTRODUCES THE NEW MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 IN GCC REGION

Michelin today announced the availability of MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyres in the GCC region. True to its Mission of sustainable mobility, this latest update of the popular PRIMACY range, the new MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyre is a reference in tyre safety.

After three years of development, this tyre provides a high level of performance in both dry and wet roads.

Going with its tagline of “Safe when new, Safe when worn”, MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyres respond to the customers’ need of long-lasting performance with exceptional braking results from new until it is worn (up to level of tread wear indicator) even when tested in most demanding wet conditions.

Thanks to the use of latest generation elastomers, the new MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyre delivers a very high level of grip, from the first to the last kilometer, without compromising longevity. To achieve this level of grip, the tread pattern has been optimized with the new design that reveals squarer and less tapered grooves.

Naser Shashaa, Regional Director, Middle East region, Michelin said: “We are delighted to bring MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 Tyres to our region. The Michelin Group is committed to delivering long lasting performance from the first to the last kilometer and this new range will provide motorists the pleasure of driving without compromising on performance, safety and longevity.

“Several Michelin patented technologies have been combined to provide this range a very high-performance level. Thanks to a new rubber compound, sculpture geometry has been optimized to guarantee a high performance level at the end of the tyre life.”

MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 offers an excellent level of performance in braking on both dry and wet roads. The new MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyre brakes on average 0.8m shorter than its direct competitors in dry condition. (1)

When compared to competitor tyres in wet conditions, the new MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyre brakes, on average, 0.9m shorter than its direct competitors and when tested in worn condition, the MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 brakes 2.8m shorter than the average of the competitor tyres. (2) (3)

The new MICHELIN PRIMACY 4 tyre also simplifies the reading of its wear level. Continental Announces 2019 Middle East Arrival for New Digital Tyre Monitoring Platform ContiConnect

ContiConnect Depot-R

Continental, the leading automotive, tyre and technology company, has announced that its new digital tyre monitoring platform for commercial fleets, ContiConnect, is set to be introduced in the Middle East by 2019. This efficient solution for remote tyre monitoring helps fleets to maximise efficiency and sends alerts if tyre pressure deviates from the defined value.

By providing this information the new platform allows fleets to benefit from a reduced number of breakdowns, lowers maintenance costs, and generates value by increasing the vehicle’s uptime. ContiConnect allows fleet managers to act proactively instead of fixing problems reactively, not only for single vehicles but for entire commercial fleets, such as trucks, buses, industrial or earthmoving vehicles

Juan Uruburu, Head of Sales, Commercial Vehicle Tyres, Continental Middle East, said: “ContiConnect is the starting point for Continental to become a profound partner for tyre-related data services. We are taking a huge step forward in our evolution from a premium tyre manufacturer to a solutions provider with this new digital tyre monitoring platform, which will provide a whole host of important benefits to customers in the Middle East from 2019.”

The introduction of ContiConnect follows the arrival in the Middle East earlier this year of ContiPressureCheck™, a first-of-its-kind monitoring system for buses and trucks that continuously monitors tyre pressure and temperature via sensors placed inside the tyre.

ContiConnect consists of different components that can be combined in multiple ways:

  • Tyre sensor – making the tyre intelligent

The tyre sensor connects the vehicle’s tyres with the outside world. It is mounted on the tyre’s inner liner, the optimal mounting position to ensure precise measurement of both tyre pressure and temperature. Further, the sensor is protected from damage or theft. Both a retro-fit and a pre-fit solution are available. Continental’s intelligent tyre has a pre-installed sensor, making it faster and more convenient for fleets to start digital tyre monitoring, while ensuring the housing is correctly installed within the tyre first time around.

  • Yard reader station – the receiver for tyre data

The yard reader station is the connecting component between the tyre sensor and Continental´s backend. It reads the data off the sensors as the vehicle passes by the receiver in the yard and sends the data to the backend where it is analysed and interpreted. The yard reader station is installed at the fleet´s frequent touch points, like washing bay, gas station or other check-points.

  • Web portal – interface to the entire fleet

The web portal is the interface where fleet managers can proactively, and remotely, monitor and track the tyre condition and performance of all vehicles within their fleet. The browser-based portal offers various display options and can be accessed from any type of device. It shows the history of the tyre data and enables retrospective analyses.

  • Notifications – Keeping fleet managers informed

The solution notifies fleet managers via e-mail or SMS and suggests corrective measures where necessary. The notifications allow the fleet managers to better plan tyre maintenance and ensure timely information about deviations. For the entire fleet this means higher uptime and less maintenance.

Continental research highlights the need to pay more attention to tyre safety

Tyre Safety
Tyre Safety

Research by Continental, the premium tyre and automotive manufacturer, has revealed the degree to which UAE parents are overlooking basic safety checks of their vehicles, putting themselves and their children at risk. Contrary to the advice of safety experts, most parents are failing to check their tyres safety regularly enough, with a quarter not even being able to recall the last time they did a proper check.

As part of its Vison Zero safety initiative, Continental conducted two studies: one in collaboration with YouGov and another in partnership with the GEMS Modern Academy Dubai. The YouGov study of parents in the UAE showed the frequency with which parents check their tyres while a survey at the school inspected the tyre health of parents’ vehicles parked there.

Road safety experts recommend checking tyres at least once per month for air pressure, tread depth and signs of irregular wear to help prevent catastrophic tyre failure while on the road [1]. However, of parents who said that they regularly drive their children to school, more than half (52 per cent) had not checked their tyres in the last month, according to the Continental-commissioned YouGov survey. Highlighting further concerns about child safety, one in four parents surveyed could not bring to mind the last time a thorough check on their vehicles tyres.

With tyre-related accidents in the UAE is believed to be contributing to around five percent of traffic deaths, Continental’s survey raises questions about parents’ awareness of basic vehicle safety precautions and the safety of the traditional daily “school run”.

Subsequent to these findings, Continental, and their local partner Emirates for Universal Tyres (EUT), carried out standard tyre tests on over 200 vehicles parked at the GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai, to help ensure that parents were ferrying their children safely and also to raise awareness around the issue. The expert technicians conducting the tests recommended that 24 of the vehicles, more than one in ten of the sample, should have at least one of their tyres replaced.

Commenting on the YouGov survey, Ricardo Martins, Head of Marketing, Continental Middle East said: “Checking the safety of your vehicle on a regular basis is the responsibility of each and every driver and is just one simple way of minimising the risk of road accidents. Finding out that this is not something that is regularly done by most parents in the UAE reinforced our motivation to look at the issue in greater detail and take action.

“We are pleased to have brought to the attention of dozens of parents the need to regularly check the health of your vehicle’s tyres. We take our global initiative of Vision Zero – our aspiration for a world with zero fatalities, injuries or accidents on the roads – very seriously and believe in making a difference with activities such as this,” Martins added.

Continental and EUT staff checked 204 vehicles of parents at the Gems Modern Academy in Dubai, testing for air pressure, tread depth, wear and punctures. While seven in ten vehicles had the correct tyre pressure, more than a quarter of checks discovered under-inflated tyres – a key factor contributing to irregular tread wear (discovered in 31 vehicles) and side-wall damage (found on 14 of the parked cars).

Speaking about the tyre safety initiative, Nargish Khambatta, Principal of GEMS Modern Academy in Dubai, said: “Our children’s safety is always our priority and such programmes are significant as they educate parents on the importance of road safety”.

Road safety continues to be a major issue in the UAE, with recent figures from the Ministry of Interior and National Transport Authority showing that 525 people lost their lives on the country’s roads in 2017 [2].

Speaking about the findings, Thomas Edelmann, Managing Director, RoadSafetyUAE, commented: “Tyre safety is a high concern in the UAE, especially considering the harsh climate. We experience tyre debris on our roads pretty much every day and this should serve as a warning. Tyre safety is even more relevant in the context of transporting our kids – we just want to make sure we transport our children in the safest possible manner. Caring parents should regularly check the condition of their vehicle and in particular the tyre condition by pre-drive checks. We welcome this initiative of our CSR-partner Continental.”

Continental’s YouGov survey asked 500 UAE parents about the last time they or a professional thoroughly checked the tyres on their car. Of these, 47 per cent claimed to have done so within the last month with a further 23 per cent and five per cent within the last six months and 12 months respectively. Exactly 25 per cent could not recall the last time they had their tyres checked.

As a frontrunner in automotive technological advancements and road safety, Continental is a dedicated advocate of greater safety on the roads – the company’s global Vision Zero initiative aims to totally eradicate road accidents and achieve Zero fatalities, Zero injuries and Zero accidents on the roads. These surveys were commissioned by Continental as part of its approach to delivering Vision Zero through enhancing drivers’ knowledge, attitude and awareness.

Easy digital tyre checking Service SnapSkan

Nokian Tyre SnapSkan - ARAB-MOTOR-WORLD-01

Tyres are one of the most important safety accessories on a car, but they are only as safe as their condition allows. The digital SnapSkan service, developed by tyre manufacturer Nokian Tyres in cooperation with the tyre retail and car service chain Vianor, makes tyre condition checking and monitoring simple and quick without any extra cost. The service is now launching five new checking points in the Nordic countries.

SnapSkan in brief
SnapSkan makes measuring tyre tread depth quick and easy by utilising the latest 3D scanning technology. SnapSkan scanners can be found at parking garages’ exits or entries. Driver drives over the scanner ramp when they enter or exit the parking garage and SnapSkan automatically scans the tyres. Driver can opt-in by sms or online either before or after the scanning to get the digital report of their tyres’ condition. If they choose not to opt-in, all the information SnapSkan has gathered of the vehicle will be permanently deleted within a week. If they opt-in for the report, it is sent to the driver’s mobile device totally free of charge. The report includes the measurements of tyre treads and a code that offers a discount on new tyres in selected stores.

Nokian Tyres developed the SnapSkan service because it cares about its customers. SnapSkan is the world’s first tyre scanning service that is fully automatic and available at a public location to everyone. The goal for SnapSkan is to improve road safety for millions of people in the future.

– Caring and safety are at the core of everything we do. SnapSkan is a unique consumer service and it sets us apart from other tyre manufacturers. SnapSkan allows us to communicate to the drivers not only the condition of their tyres, but also what effects their condition has on road safety in general, says Hille Korhonen, President & CEO for Nokian Tyres.

SnapSkan is easy and free of charge

The free-of-charge SnapSkan service makes tyre condition monitoring easy and quick for the driver. SnapSkan measures the tread depth of the car’s tyres using a drive-over scanner and sends the information directly to the driver’s smart device. The service is located in places that drivers usually visit, eliminating the need for a separate stop or a drive to a checking station. SnapSkan can measure the tyres on any passenger car and it works with all tyre brands.

– We have received a massive amount of positive customer feedback regarding SnapSkan. 80% of the people we interviewed said the service was effortless to use and would recommend it to others. An even more important figure is that 70% felt that the service improves road safety, says Ville Nikkola, the Program Manager responsible for the SnapSkan service at Nokian Tyres.

Now even more user-friendly

SnapSkan was first introduced in 2016 at the technology and startup event Slush. A prototype of the service was in use at a multi-storey parking garage in Helsinki and the first customer service point was opened in June 2017 in a parking garage in Turku, Finland. The customer feedback from these first two service points was used to develop the entire SnapSkan consumer service even further.

-We have developed the service to be even more user-friendly from scanning to reporting. We feel that the service is now ready to be introduced to an even larger number of drivers, says Nikkola.

This week, a total of four new SnapSkan service points will be opened in parking garages in various locations across Finland. SnapSkan is also going international with the opening of a new service point in Oslo, Norway. This is the first SnapSkan service point outside of Finland.
