From virtual to reality: Development and race preparation in the BMW i Motorsport simulator

BMW-i-Motorsport-04

Before a Formula E car like the BMW iFE.18 can win races on the track, a great deal of virtual development and preparation work is required. The engineers working on the BMW i Motorsport project use a custom developed and built simulator for that work. It is in this simulator that the majority of testing takes place – both in the development phase as well as in immediate preparation for the race weekends. Without a sophisticated simulator, successful participation in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship would not be conceivable. Here is an insight into the virtual world of BMW Motorsport.

BMW-i-Motorsport-05
BMW-i-Motorsport-03

It is the same routine ahead of every Formula E race weekend: The BMW i Andretti Motorsport drivers António Félix da Costa (POR) and Alexander Sims (GBR) travel to Munich (GER), to the BMW Motorsport headquarters, together with the BMW i Andretti Motorsport race engineers for a test session – and not in a real race car on the track, but in the simulator. That is where they prepare themselves for the street circuits on the Formula E calendar and work with the team engineers meticulously going through all conceivable scenarios that could occur at the race weekend. Set-up opportunities, weather, safety car, energy management, ATTACK MODE: The simulations cover all eventualities within the scope of the technical possibilities.

“It is incredibly valuable – especially for me as a rookie – getting to know the tracks in the simulator and getting a feeling for the speeds,” said Sims, who made his Formula E debut at the season opener in Ad Diriyah (KSA) in December. “However, it is just as valuable simulating energy management and trying out various strategies for the race.”

As close to reality as possible in software and hardware.

During this kind of race simulation, every detail is taken care of. The focus is on the virtual car in the software, which BMW Motorsport engineers programme themselves. It maps all the parameters of the driving dynamics as realistically as possible. The software is optimised for racing use, but is also compatible with every other simulator environment within the BMW Group and thus provides valuable synergies between motorsport and series production.

In addition to the software, the hardware also replicates the relevant areas faithful to reality. The driver’s cockpit environment, meaning the seating position, controls and everything else that they see and touch correspond to reality 1:1. The same applies to the engineers. Their working environment is the same in the simulator as it is at the racetrack. Like the software, all elements of the hardware are built by the BMW Motorsport engineers themselves. The focus is always on maximum functionality.

Simulator indispensable during the development of the BMW iFE.18.

Besides the race preparation the simulator is essential for the development of all different car concepts at BMW Motorsport – the BMW iFE.18 being one of them. It enabled engineers to test things with the drivers that either would not have been possible to try out at all, or only possible with great effort in terms of time and resources. A simulator is essential for the Formula E project in particular.

The importance of virtual reality is also growing in BMW Motorsport’s other race projects, so the simulator is used frequently. It was designed for multifunctionality right from the start and can be used to simulate all BMW racing cars. It only takes a few hours to modify the simulator from a Formula E to a DTM configuration, for example – making it ready for virtual test drives in the BMW M4 DTM.

The New BMW M3 CS

BMW M3 CS

BMW M GmbH is presenting another exclusive, limited-run special-edition model in the shape of the new BMW M3 CS (fuel consumption combined: 8.5 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 198 g/km*). With its accentuated sporting presence, the new M3 CS continues the decades-long tradition of successful M special editions which began in 1988 with the E30 BMW M3 Evolution. At the same time, the four-door high-performance sedan serves up a perfect blend of dynamism and everyday practicality.

BMW M3 CS

The 3.0-litre high-performance engine exceeds the output of the M3 with Competition Package by 10 horsepower, raising it to 460 hp. State-of-the-art M TwinPower Turbo technology propels the M3 CS from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds. The top speed of the new special edition, which comes as standard with the M Driver’s Package, is electronically limited to 280 km/h (174 mph). With its two mono-scroll turbochargers, charge air cooler, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing, the six-cylinder in-line engine takes a clear and consistent aim at the higher echelons of performance, but is equally committed to developing significant torque from low engine speeds and achieving high levels of efficiency (fuel consumption combined: 8.5 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 198 g/km*). Pushing the new red start/stop button fires up the engine, and the distinctive sound produced by the specially tuned sports exhaust system of the new BMW M3 CS – with its quartet of tailpipes – proceeds to lay on a feast for the ears.

The new BMW M3 CS is equipped as standard with the seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Drivelogic. This cutting-edge transmission has a separate oil cooler and enables both automated gear changes and manual interventions using the shift paddles on the steering wheel. It changes gears in fractions of a second with no interruption in the flow of power, but employs a long seventh gear to keep revs low and minimise fuel consumption over longer motorway journeys.

BMW M3 CS

The suspension of the new BMW M3 CS largely mirrors that of the M3 with Competition Package. The links and wheel carriers at both the front and rear axles are made from forged aluminium and are therefore extremely light. That keeps the unsprung masses low and benefits driving dynamics. The M3 CS is fitted as standard with Adaptive M suspension, whose geometry has been tuned to deliver optimised performance on both the road and track. Ensuring the best possible grip in all driving conditions are the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system – which includes M Dynamic Mode – and the Active M Differential. The control systems for the Adaptive M suspension, DSC and Active M Differential have been modified to suit the dynamic requirements of the BMW M3 CS, as has the set-up of the electromechanical steering. The driver has the option of adjusting the steering and suspension settings to their personal preferences or the demands of the route at hand. The special edition’s light-alloy wheels (front: 9 J x 19, rear: 10 J x 20) are very much at home on the race track, fitted as they are (as standard) with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres (front: 265/35 R 19, rear: 285/30 R 20). These semi-slick cup tyres, which are also road-legal, provide unbeatable grip and supreme lateral stability at high track speeds. The M3 CS can also be ordered with Michelin Sport road tyres.

Moving inside the new BMW M3 CS, the generous use of two-tone full leather in Silverstone/Black and Alcantara creates a compelling and well-resolved ambience brimming with sporting allure and undeniable class. No M3 CS driver will need to compromise on the nicer things in life. Indeed, among the standard features on board are automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon surround sound system and the Navigation system Professional. True to form, the BMW M GmbH designers have given the new M3 CS looks that reflect the car’s sporting intent. The signature feature of its prominent front end, complete with cutting-edge twin LED headlights, is the front apron with large, three-section air intakes. The Gurney spoiler lip on the boot lid has been newly designed specifically for the new M3 CS, and teams up with the front splitter and the rear diffuser to help minimise dynamic lift. These components are made from the lightweight and extremely rigid high-tech material carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP), as are the bonnet and roof of the new BMW M3 CS.

The BMW Drag Race Event with Abu Dhabi Motors

On Thursday 5th of April 2018, the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi was not your usual Drag Night. Abu Dhabi Motors, dealer of BMW in Abu Dhabi, transformed the drag strip of Yas into a roaring, adrenaline rushing, and exciting motor-head arena.

As soon as you enter the arena, you start to smell, feel and see the BMW lifestyle and what does it stand for. BMW accessories, clothing, and a luxury display is all over the place. And what is the BMW Lifestyle without speed and adrenaline, everywhere you turn your head there’s a BMW vehicle waiting for you to admire.

Skipping forward, I got my bracelet, signed my release form, got my helmet and it was race time. We headed towards the drag strip and there was the gorgeous line up of BMW forming a rainbow of colors just waiting to be driven. Few moments before the drag race begins, the instructors were giving us last minute tips and tricks and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the steering wheel to drive those magnificent machines.

Race time is here, and I wanted to drive them all. Abu Dhabi Motors was selected the best of the best from all categories: ALPINA B4, ALPINA B5, BMW M2, BMW M3, BMW M4, BMW X3 M 40i, BMW X4 M 40i, BMW X5M, BMW X6M and BMW M5 50i.

I hopped into the first car and adrenaline was rushing through my veins as I head towards the starting line, Sport mode on and the rest is pure action. Drag racing one BMW after another, I couldn’t believe the acceleration and top speed we were reaching on the asphalt of the Drag race arena in Yas Marina Circuit.

The event was not about the competition rather than about having fun and feeling the power of these wild German machines. Despite that fact, I was one of the fastest on the track and was able to score the fastest time on the track of 12.01 seconds on a 400m strip.

Being able to test drive a BMW on a drag strip was a dream come true yet how about being able to run the drag strip on more than 10 BMWs each had its own character and its own sensation. The event ended as the night shed its wing however the feelings we had all of us will last a lifetime.

2017 – An Excellent Year for BMW

bmw-5-series-Arab-Motor-World

Numerous awards underline BMW’s position as a leading manufacturer of premium automobiles.

In 2017, numerous awards and prizes have yet again underscored the high degree of recognition BMW automobiles, the brand and the company meet with both nationally and internationally. Not only were the outstanding product attributes offered across all model series honoured with accolades, but also their design, innovative technologies, intelligent connectivity and, last but not least, exceptional level of sustainability. The prize winners were chosen both by readers of well-known trade journals as well as by juries consisting of car journalists and experts from the IT, business, environment and design sectors.

New BMW 5 Series clinches the most awards.
The new BMW 5 Series was particularly successful, receiving more accolades than any other BMW automobile. This success underlines not only the high appreciation the new BMW 5 Series meets with worldwide, but also that the new generation launched at the end of 2016 keeps pace with the newest developments. In the UK, the trade journal “What Car?” voted the BMW 5 Series overall winner of “Car of the Year”, and within the framework of the “New Car Award” (“Autocar”) it also received the “Executive Car of the Year” accolade. The BMW 5 Series not only met with the highest approval in the readers’ choice “Auto Trophy – World’s Best Cars” held by the German trade journal “Auto Zeitung” in the category “Luxury Class”, but was also voted “Four-wheel Drive Car of the Year” in the four-wheel drive vehicle class over 40,000 Euros by readers of the German trade journal “Auto Bild Allrad”. The BMW 5 Series’ leading position in the area of vehicle connectivity is reflected in it winning the “Car Connectivity Award 2017” (“auto motor und sport” in collaboration with “Chip”) and the “Golden Computer” award (“Computer Bild”). In both cases, the BMW 5 Series was able to clinch victory in the category “Connected Car”. With that many attributes, it is not surprising that the BMW 5 Series is also able to convince with long-term quality and was also awarded the title “Value Champion 2017” by the trade journal “Auto Bild” and used car professionals from eurotaxSCHWACKEexpert for low car value depreciation values. However, the design of the series models, which are available in the Sedan and Touring versions, was also very convincing. Not only was the BMW 5 Series bestowed with the “Red Dot Award: Product Design” by judges from the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen, but the award panel of the iF Industrie Forum Design e. V. also honoured the new generation of the world’s most successful business sedan with the “iF Gold Award” (category “Automobiles”) for outstanding design.

BMW i3 and BMW i8 enjoy an excellent reputation.
In 2017, BMW’s high level of competence in the area of electrified drive systems was yet again able to convince, a fact that is substantiated by the numerous accolades that went to the purely electrically powered BMW i3 and the progressive plug-in hybrid sports car BMW i8. In the readers’ vote held by “Auto Zeitung”, the “Auto Trophy” in the category “Electric Cars” went to the BMW i3, whilst readers honoured the BMW i8 within the framework of the “Green Mobility Trophy” as “Best Hybrid Car”. Likewise, the two BMW series models proved unbeatable in the voting for “Green Auto Test Winner”, a prize awarded by the automotive trade journal “Auto Test” in collaboration with “Ökotrend”. The BMW i3 (category “Small Car”) and the BMW i8 (category “Coupes”) were each voted “Most Environmentally Friendly Car”, and like the BMW 5 Series, the innovative sports coupe was successful in the readers’ vote for “Four-wheel Drive Car of the Year” (Auto Bild Allrad, category “Four-wheel Drive Hybrid Cars”), whilst in the UK, the BMW i3 clinched not only the title “Car of the Year” awarded by “What Car?”, but also the “New Car Award” endowed by “Autocar” in the category “Electric Car of the Year”.

For the third time in a row, the BMW i8 was bestowed with the “International Engine of the Year Award”. Following overall victory in 2015 and class victory in 2016, the innovative and highly efficient drive system featured by the BMW i8 convinced specialist jurors, remaining unbeaten in the rating for “Engines with a displacement of 1.4 to 1.8 litres” in 2017 as well. The choice of the BMW X5 xDrive40e iPerformance as “Green SUV of the Year” by the “Green Car Journal” (USA) rounds off the excellent performance demonstrated by electric and electrified automobiles from BMW.

Connectivity: Awards underline leading position.
In addition to automotive products, vehicle connectivity also gathered a number of accolades. BMW emerged particularly successful in the award “The Best Brands” held by the trade journal “Auto Bild”: With victories in the categories “Connected Car”, “Assistant Systems”, “Menu Navigation and Operation”, “Smartphone to Internet Connectivity” and “Well-connected Services”, all best ratings in the category “Connectivity und Infotainment” went to BMW.

BMW’s exceptional position in this area is also underpinned by the successes achieved by the BMW Navigation system Professional (category “Navigation Systems”), the BMW WLAN Hotspot (category “Entertainment/Multimedia”) and the BMW Touch Display (category “Operating Concepts/Displays”) in the “Car Connectivity Award 2017” (“auto motor und sport” in collaboration with “Chip”).

First places also for brand and company.
The Best Brands Organisation (incl. “ProSiebenSat. 1 Media”, “WirtschaftsWoche”, “Die Zeit”, “Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung”) honoured the BMW brand as “Best Corporate Brand (international)”, whilst the BMW AG received the “Luxury Award” in the category “Business Enterprise”, which was presented for the first time by the magazine “Robb Report”. Furthermore, the automotive journal “Auto Test” and the magazine “Ökotrend” honoured the BMW Group in the voting for “Green Car Test Winner” with the title “The Most Environmentally Friendly Brand”.

As a whole, the awards and accolades won underline the fact that BMW not only provides convincing state-of-the-art products and services, but as a company also actively shapes the trends of tomorrow. BMW’s inventive strength as a trendsetter has a long-standing tradition: With the BMW 600 and the BMW M1, two BMW automobiles from two different eras in the company’s history have each received the most reader’s votes in the “Golden Classic Steering Wheel” award (“Auto Bild”) and the “Motor Classic Award” (“Motor Klassik”) and emerged victorious in each of their classes.

Its iPerformance badge stands for BMW eDrive technology paired with a BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine to create an exceptionally efficient and dynamic plug-in hybrid powertrain that excels in all driving situations – including running with zero local emissions. Its luxurious character is brought alive by its cabin, in particular; the car‘s sheer size forms the basis for an interior experience unmatched by any BMW, past or present. The interplay between precise, pared-down forms and a sense of space, the driver and passengers alike will find themselves immersed in a modern setting with an truly exclusive feel. The wealth of possibilities offered by personalised, digital connectivity allows the vehicle’s interior to be turned, as desired, into a personalised place of either retreat or productivity.

In a region filled with so many driving enthusiasts, who value high-performance driving dynamics in a stylish, comfortable, and luxurious package, visitors to the stand will no doubt be excited to explore the new BMW M5 Sedan – the sports sedan that the region has been waiting for.

It has a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 engine that boasts 600-horsepower, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and for the first time in an M5, all-wheel drive. But for those who prefer the feel of a rear-wheel drive the new BMW M5 also offers a 2WD capability. It has lightning-quick acceleration, going from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds. This is thanks in part to its carbon fibre-reinforced roof and the lighter exhaust system, which reduce the weight, giving a faster, smoother drive, with a chassis that was tested on the world’s most challenging race circuit, the Nuerburgring Nordschleife – as we do with all of our M models.

This model is expected to set a new benchmark in premium sports cars, and is displayed alongside BMW’s other distinctive new models; the M4 CS, the X5 M, the M2 Coupe, and the M4 Convertible Competition.

Along with the BMW Concept X7 iPerformance and the BMW M5 Sedan, BMW Group is also display the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept. Marking a triumphant return of the GP in a special concept edition, this edition boats 19-inch racing wheels, a fully carbon-fibre body kit, and a boost to horsepower, with remarkable design.

The concept study conveys spontaneous readiness, offering a genuine foretaste of an extremely dynamic serial production model that is constantly able to demonstrate its race track suitability while at the same time reaching a new level of excellence in terms of driving fun in day-to-day traffic, due to the fact that is approved for road use. Powerful proportions, expressive colours and exterior components that can be clearly seen to optimise both weight and aerodynamic properties – all this is already suggestive of outstanding performance properties.

Alongside the MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept is the MINI Countryman – the final piece in the new upgraded MINI family and the largest and most versatile MINI in the brand’s 57-year history. Following its launch in March this year, the MINI Countryman has enjoyed enormous success in Dubai and around the region. Having been completely newly developed, it now reflects considerable advancements in the areas of space, functionality, athletic flair and premium characteristics and is a big step in the British brand’s continued advance into the premium compact segment. It achieves its unique standing with its powerfully expressive design, efficiently shaped bodywork and truly unmatched driving agility. The latest version of the all-wheel drive system ALL4 ensures driving fun beyond paved roads, too.

More than 100,000 visitors are expected to attend the 14th edition of the biennial motor show, which is the largest automotive event in the MENA region.

The new BMW M3 CS

BMW M GmbH is presenting another exclusive, limited-run special-edition model in the shape of the new BMW M3 CS (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 194 g/km*). With its accentuated sporting presence, the new M3 CS continues the decades-long tradition of successful M special editions which began in 1988 with the E30 BMW M3 Evolution. At the same time, the four-door high-performance sedan serves up a perfect blend of dynamism and everyday practicality.

With its two mono-scroll turbochargers, charge air cooler, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-VANOS fully variable camshaft timing, the six-cylinder in-line engine takes a clear and consistent aim at the higher echelons of performance, but is equally committed to developing significant torque from low engine speeds and achieving high levels of efficiency (fuel consumption combined: 8.3 l/100 km [34.0 mpg imp]*; CO2 emissions combined: 194 g/km*).

Orders for the new BMW M3 CS can be placed from January 2018. The special-edition model – which will be limited to a run of approximately 1,200 units due to production factors – will be built from March 2018.
