Illuminating Design: The Art Behind GMC’s Signature Lighting

GMC design Sierra Denali 2019 - 4 - Arab Motor World

From roof rails to rocker sills, from grille to gate and everything in between, every GMC is designed to be a holistic design that expresses precision. But if anyone particular element were to best reflect the GMC’s attention to artistic detail and craftsmanship, it would be its exterior lighting, with the C-shape graphic that has complemented the signature professional grade design cues of GMC models introduced in 2012.

Decades ago, headlamps and tail lamps were usually simple, fixed forms that vehicle shapes had to be designed around. Today, these lamps are an integral part of the initial design process for a vehicle and also play a significant role in shaping the exterior surfacing for GMC SUVs and trucks. To achieve this, GMC’s lighting design team gets involved with projects at a very advanced stage, working in close collaboration with the exterior and interior design studios.

“Automotive lamps used to be an afterthought; yet, that couldn’t be further from the truth today,” says Addam Ebel, GMC Lighting Studio Design Lead. “We are always looking at and working with new technologies and innovative ways to further elevate our craft.  Whatever we produce further down the road, will be at a level beyond the high standards GMC has already established today.”

A perfect example of this synergy between design teams is reflected through the 2018 Terrain and it’s bold exterior design which has signalled the next chapter of GMC’s design language, evolving the brand’s signature cues with stronger elements including dramatic headlamps sculpted around the illuminated C-shaped signature lighting. Creating these lamps is an artform – a process of precision that mirrors the level of execution expected throughout a GMC.

Although models like the GMC Terrain and Acadia have helped advance GMC’s lighting designs, advanced lighting technology has been key in shaping the 2019 Sierra as well. New “light blade” signature lighting elements within Sierra Denali’s headlamps help accentuate the pickup truck’s exterior design, providing a distinctive appearance no matter the time of day.

According to Sajed Sbeih, Head of Brand, GMC Middle East, “We have always put in efforts to further innovate and upgrade our product offerings with unique features that our customers expect in terms of technologies, functionality safety and most importantly design. With a bold Denali grille and C-shaped LED signature lighting, GMC vehicles have been distinctive for some time and underwent a thorough rethought and reshaping process to complement the future of GMC and the brand’s professional grade.”

The lamps themselves are almost miniaturized multimedia art installations, a mixture of sculpted and machined elements, jeweled lenses, projectors, and advanced technology.

While GMC’s C-shaped lighting helps provide an identifiable element from hundreds of feet away, designers craft plenty of precise, intricate detail within the lamps themselves, providing an element of delight when also inspected up close.

GMC introduces versatility, refinement, and advanced safety technologies on the 2018 Acadia in the Middle East

GMC is upgrading the 2018 Acadia offerings in the Middle East with the All-Terrain trim now available on both the SLE and SLT models of the premium crossover. Available with five-, six- and seven-passenger seating configurations, the 2018 Acadia is designed to offer great versatility, more refinement and advanced safety technologies, while featuring an efficient powertrain, a lightweight body structure and enhanced off-road capability.

Continuing the momentum of owning over a quarter GMC’s overall retail sales, Denali returns to the Terrain with greater exclusivity than ever, offering a distinctive range-topping design and uniquely refined features.

“GMC’s strong growth over the past decade is due in large part to Terrain,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of global GMC Sales and Marketing. “The all-new Terrain builds on that success, leveraging GMC’s proven premium SUV experience to shake up the largest vehicle segment, with a strong blend of design, functionality and engineering excellence.”

Bold, modern design

The new Terrain’s bold exterior signals the next chapter of GMC’s design language, evolving the brand’s signature cues with stronger, sharper and more sculpted elements such as the grille and lighting features. Its shape was refined in the wind tunnel to help ensure the distinctive profile cuts through the air with optimal efficiency and quietness.

Elevating GMC’s new design, the all-new Terrain Denali will feature its signature satin chrome grille along with Denali-specific accents including body-color fascias, lower trim and door handles, plus bright roof-mounted side rails, and chrome outside mirrors and body-side molding. Additionally, LED headlamps and 19-inch ultra-bright machined aluminum wheels are standard on Denali.

All other models feature signature LED running lamps and tail lamps. Bi-functional HID headlamps are standard on SLE and SLT. Additionally, 17-inch wheels are standard on SLE, with 18-inch wheels available on SLE, and standard on SLT.

Turbocharged propulsion choices

GMC’s new Electronic Precision Shift enables more storage room in the center console by replacing the conventional transmission shifter with electronically controlled gear selection consisting of intuitive push buttons and pull triggers.

The Terrain comes standard with GMC’s driver-controllable Traction Select system, which has choices for different driving conditions. Elements such as the throttle responses are optimized for the selected driving mode. AWD models include a FWD mode that disconnects the AWD system to minimize drag and optimize fuel economy, while the AWD mode offers all the benefits of an active AWD system.

Refined, versatile and purposeful interior

Like the exterior, the new Terrain’s interior makes a statement and serves as a fundamental component of the vehicle’s heightened emphasis on refinement and functionality. Elements such as authentic aluminum trim, soft-touch materials on the instrument panel and doors and standard active noise cancellation are premium features seamlessly integrated into the interior design for a luxurious customer experience.

The Terrain Denali heightens the GMC experience throughout the new interior with a unique trim tint color and Denali-specific logos and piping on the front seats. Denali customers will benefit from additional standard features including a heated steering wheel, navigation, Bose premium 7-speaker sound system and a hands-free programmable power liftgate.

An expanded center console with pass-through storage underneath adds to the Terrain’s functionality. A new fold-flat front passenger seat and flat-folding rear seat help Terrain offer greater versatility for stowing longer items and make it easier to load cargo. There are also new under-floor compartments in the cargo area for more secure storage.

GMC keeps passengers connected with 7-inch and available 8-inch-diagonal infotainment systems, featuring compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are subject to their terms, privacy statements and data plan rates.

Expanded range of safety features

An expanded range of available active safety technologies is designed to enhance driver awareness and even help make it easier to park and maneuver in low-speed situations. A Mountain of a Milestone: 2017 Marks the Delivery of the Millionth GMC Denali

2018-GMC-Yukon-Denali-Arab-Motor-World

2017 proved a landmark year for GMC as it saw the delivery of the one millionth GMC vehicle from the Denali line – GMC’s premium package for its models. This marked a milestone in the Denali nameplate’s twenty-year history. Outside of North America, the Middle East is the only region GMC exports to, cementing the significance of the Arab countries in shaping the heritage of the GMC brand and Denali range alike.

Named after North America’s highest peak, the Denali badge first appeared in 1997, when GMC unveiled the Yukon Denali show vehicle. This one-off concept vehicle set the stage for the production of Yukon Denali, which went on sale in late 1998, which differed substantially from a conventional Yukon at the time.

A new front clip and unique body moldings lent the SUV a bold and strong presence, and monochromatic paint treatment added an air of sophistication, while distinctive polished chrome wheels provided an eye-catching accent. The show vehicle interior not only offered premium leather-appointed seating, but also a GPS navigation unit and hands-free cell phone integration.

With Yukon Denali, GMC aimed to rise above the standard of other American trucks and SUVs in the North American and the Middle East markets. In 2016, The Yukon Denali accounted for 60 percent of GMC Yukon sales in the UAE.

“The advent of Yukon Denali signaled a big shift, both in the industry and for GMC itself,” said Sajed Sbeih, Head of Brand, GMC, General Motors Middle East.

“GMC had a long-standing reputation for building strong, dependable trucks and SUVs that provide versatility and utility above anything else. With a premium-grade model, the Denali line greatly resonated and continues to do so with our customers, on a whole new level, especially in the Middle East,” Sbeih added.

If the original goal was to broaden the GMC range by entering – or even creating – the premium truck and SUV market, then Denali has certainly been a success. What originally started as a single model has since blossomed into an incredibly strong product line of its own. The Denali portfolio in the Middle East currently consists of three SUV models –the Yukon, Acadia and Terrain – in addition to GMC’s flagship truck, the Sierra Denali.

Denali models accounted for just over 25 percent of all GMC global retail sales in 2016. In the UAE alone, Denali made up 33 percent of all GMC vehicles sold in the country last year.

While much has changed in the past two decades, key Denali attributes – namely bold, striking design, elevated refinement, and advanced connectivity features – not only remain in place in today’s Denali models, but are stronger than ever.

“It is a striking design with functional beauty,” said Helen Emsley, executive director, Global GMC Design. “There’s confidence and optimism in its stance, with exceptional attention to detail that speaks to GMC’s rise as a premium brand.”

A range of two all-new turbocharged gas engines, including the new 1.5L and 2.0L turbocharged gas engines, matched with two unique new nine-speed automatic transmissions, with the 2.0L turbo engine offering stronger acceleration and a higher degree of performance than its 1.5L counterpart.

The features include radar and camera-based adaptive technologies that can provide alerts to potential crash threats, allowing the driver to react and make changes to potentially avoid them, including:

  • New Surround Vision
  • New Forward Collision Alert with Following Distance Indicator
  • New Low-Speed Forward Automatic Braking
  • New Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • New Safety Alert Seat

The new Terrain also features GMC’s new Rear Seat Reminder. Rear Seat Reminder alerts drivers to check the back seat as they exit their vehicles under certain circumstances.

2018-GMC-Yukon-Denali

GMC has announced first details of the exciting line-up of models that it will be showcasing at this year’s Dubai International Motor Show (14-18 November 2017). GMC’s all-new 2018 Terrain and 2018 Yukon Denali will both make their Middle East debuts, while visitors to the show will also be able to view a new special edition concept model, on display for the first time anywhere in the world.

It is fitting that the Middle East’s leading motor show will host the global reveal of the new special edition. GMC can proudly point to a long and rich heritage in the Middle East, the only region outside North America where it is marketed. The brand, affectionately known across the region as ‘Jims’, entered the market in the 1930s with 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles that were specifically developed for desert use. Its range of pick-up trucks, SUVs and crossover vehicles are renowned for their capability, innovation and engineering excellence.

Sajed Sbeih, Head of Brand for GMC Middle East, said: “With GMC’s long-standing presence in the region, it was a logical step for us to choose to unveil this special edition concept at the Dubai International Motor Show. We’re pleased to be able to give visitors to the show a real ‘world first’, as well as ‘regional firsts’ including the all-new 2018 GMC Terrain and newly designed 2018 Yukon Denali.”

2018 GMC Yukon Denali Elevates Style, Refinement

GMC is elevating the 2018 Yukon Denali lineup with styling and trim enhancements, as well as a new, advanced 10-speed automatic transmission. A new, sculpted grille design distinguishes the Yukon Denali, while new Mastique Ash real wood trim adds depth and richness to the interior.

The new 10-speed transmission — paired with Yukon Denali’s 6.2L V-8 engine — enhances refinement with world-class shift smoothness, responsiveness and quietness.

“Yukon Denali has always matched style with substance, and the enhancements for 2018 advance that legacy,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. “The foundational elements of exclusive design, premium touches and uncompromising capability have made Yukon Denali an icon for nearly 20 years.”

Multi-Dimensional Grille Design

GMC designers evolved the iconic Denali grille with a multidimensional, sculpted interpretation that, like other contemporary GMC elements, was designed in a layered manner. It’s a theme seen in other new GMC models such as the Acadia and Terrain.

“The new grille, which is flanked by HID headlamps and LED Signature Lighting, advances the design legacy established with the very first Yukon Denali in 1999,” said Matt Noone, director, Global GMC Exterior Design. “It’s a more exciting and sophisticated design, while remaining instantly recognizable as part of the GMC Denali family.”

In addition to a more sophisticated appearance, the new grille offers greater airflow to the radiator. Active aero shutters behind the grille close in certain conditions on the highway to reduce aerodynamic drag and enhance efficiency.

10 Speeds, Refined Performance

The Yukon Denali’s new 10-speed automatic leverages the engineering experience of General Motors’ multispeed transmissions to deliver improved performance.

A wider, 7.39 overall gear ratio spread, compared to the Yukon Denali’s previous eight-speed automatic, enables a lower numerical top gear ratio and contributes to greater efficiency.

The transmission’s optimized gearing and proprietary controls allow the 6.2L V-8 engine to deliver a winning combination smooth operation and precise response.
