The all new electric SUV:The Audi e-tron 50 quattro

Audi will be introducing a new power rating for its electrically driven SUV on the market in the coming year: the Audi e-tron 50 quattro. Its two electric motors have an output of 230 kW and develop 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) of torque. With a gross energy content of 71 kWh, the battery provides for a range of over 300 kilometers (186.4 mi) in the WLTP cycle. In Germany, the SUV—the entry-level model in the e-tron family—will start selling for less than 70,000 euros, which means that it fulfills the conditions for the environmental bonus.

The Audi e-tron 50 quattro combines a high level of efficiency and sporty performance. Just like the model originally launched on the market, the entry-level version also has an electric motor at the front and rear axles. With a combined total of 230 kW and 540 Nm of torque, they accelerate the electric SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.0 seconds. Speed is electronically governed only at 190 km/h. In order to achieve the highest efficiency, only the rear electric motor is active in most driving situations, while the front electric motor is activated predictively when needed. The regulation of the electric all-wheel drive is extremely fast, highly connected and very precise. In combination with modern suspension components including air suspension and the low vehicle center of gravity, it provides excellent dynamics and stability.

The battery unit of the Audi e-tron 50 quattro comprises 324 prismatic cells combined in 27 modules. These store up to 71 kWh of energy – enough for a range of more than 300 kilometers in the WLTP cycle. The high efficiency can be attributed to the newly calibrated drivetrain and various optimizations to the high-voltage system. The lower gross weight, which also reduces running resistance, contributes to this as does the efficient thermal management system with its standard thermal pump. This system regulates the temperature of the interior as well as the battery and cools the electric motors, the power electronics and the charger. In this way it ensures that the high-voltage components enjoy a long service life and enables fast charging with direct current (DC).

Audi e-tron 50 quattro

The Audi e-tron 50 quattro can charge with up to 120 kW at a so-called high-power charging station. This means that the electric SUV is all set for the next long-distance stretch of a journey in approximately half an hour. Alternatively, the battery can be supplied with alternating current (AC). At a charging capacity of 11 kW, this takes about seven hours. After the market introduction, a second, on-board charging device will be added to the offering as an option. It will allow charging using up to 22 kW at AC stations.

For charging at home, the Audi e-tron 50 quattro is equipped with the compact mobile charging system as standard. It supports a charging capacity of up to 11 kW when connected to a 400 volt industrial outlet. Up to 2.3 kW are possible with a 230 volt domestic outlet.

Like the more powerful version of the electric SUV, the Audi e-tron 50 quattro also recuperates energy via its two electric motors, preferably the rear one, during more than 90 percent of all deceleration actions. This means that the energy from practically all normal braking maneuvers is recovered and fed back into the battery. The newly developed wheel brake system with electrohydraulic actuation is activated only above a deceleration of more than 0.3 g. This results in short braking distances in all situations. The standard efficiency assistant also helps the driver to adopt an economical driving style through automatic recuperation and predictive information in the Audi virtual cockpit. The system uses radar sensors, camera images, navigation data, and Car‑to‑X information to detect the traffic environment and the route. In combination with the adaptive cruise assist, the efficiency assistant can also brake and accelerate the electric SUV predictively.

The Audi e-tron 50 quattro, which is being developed in the carbon-neutral plant in Brussels, will debut in the Middle East markets in the first quarter of 2020.

Porsche Taycan World premiere

Porsche presented its first fully-electric sports car to the public today with a spectacular world premiere held simultaneously on three continents. “The Taycan links our heritage to the future. The four-door sports saloon is a unique package, offering typical Porsche performance and connectivity with everyday usability. At the same time, highly advanced production methods and the features of the Taycan are setting new standards in the fields of sustainability and digitalisation. “We promised a true Porsche for the age of electromobility – a fascinating sports car that not only excites in terms of its technology and driving dynamics, but also sparks a passion in people all over the world, just like its legendary predecessors have done. The first models in the new series are the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo. They are at the cutting edge of Porsche E-Performance and are among the most powerful production models that the sports car manufacturer currently has in its product range. Less powerful variants of these all-wheel drive vehicles will follow this year. The first derivative to be added will be the Taycan Cross Turismo at the end of next year. Performance meets efficiencyPorsche Taycan

The flagship Turbo S version of the Taycan can generate up to 761 hp (560 kW) overboost power in combination with Launch Control, and the Taycan Turbo up to 680 hp (500 kW). The Taycan Turbo S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, while the Taycan Turbo completes this sprint in 3.2 seconds. The Turbo S has a range of up to 412 kilometres, and the Turbo a range of up to 450 kilometres (according to WLTP in each case). The top speed of both all-wheel-drive models is 260 km/h.

The Taycan is the first production vehicle with a system voltage of 800 volts instead of the usual 400 volts for electric cars. This is a particular advantage for Taycan drivers on the road: in just over five minutes, the battery can be recharged using direct current (DC) from the high-power charging network for a range of up to 100 kilometres (according to WLTP). The charging time for five to 80 percent SoC (state of charge) is 22.5 minutes for charging under ideal conditions, and the maximum charging power (peak) is 270 kW. The overall capacity of the Performance Battery Plus is 93.4 kWh. Taycan drivers can comfortably charge their cars with up to eleven kW of alternating current (AC) at home.

Pure exterior design with Porsche DNA

With its clean, puristic design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era. At the same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA. From the front it looks particularly wide and flat with highly contoured wings. The silhouette is shaped by the sporty roofline sloping downward to the rear. The highly sculpted side sections are also characteristic. The sleek cabin, the drawn-in rear C-pillar and the pronounced shoulders of the wings result in a sharply emphasised rear, typical of the brand. There are also innovative elements such as the glass-effect Porsche logo, which has been integrated into the light bar at the rear. With a Cd value from 0.22, the aerodynamically optimised basic shape makes a significant contribution to low energy consumption and thus long range.

Unique interior design with a wide display screen band

The cockpit signals the start of a new era with its clear structure and a completely new architecture. The free-standing, curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. A central, 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional passenger display are combined to form an integrated glass band in a black-panel look. All user interfaces have been completely newly designed for the Taycan. The number of classic hardware controls such as switches and buttons has been greatly reduced. Instead, control is intelligent and intuitive – using touch operation or the voice control function, which responds to the command “Hey Porsche”.

With the Taycan, Porsche offers an entirely leather-free interior for the first time. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car. “Foot garages” – recesses in the battery in the rear footwell – ensure sitting comfort in the rear and allow the low vehicle height typical of sports cars. Two luggage compartments are available: the front compartment has a capacity of 81 litres and the rear 366 litres.

Innovative drive motors and a two-speed transmission

The Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo have two exceptionally efficient electric machines, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle, thus making the cars all-wheel drive. Both the range and the continuous power of the drive benefit from the high efficiency of the permanently excited synchronous machines. The electric machine, transmission and pulse-controlled inverter are each combined into a compact drive module. The modules have the highest power density (kW per litre of package space) of all electric powertrains on the market today. A special feature of the electric motors is the “hairpin” winding of the stator coils. This technology makes it possible to incorporate more copper in the stator, increasing power output and torque while maintaining the same component volume. The two-speed transmission installed on the rear axle is an innovation developed by Porsche. First gear gives the Taycan even more acceleration from a standing start, while second gear with a long gear ratio ensures high efficiency and equally high power reserves. This also applies at very high speeds.

Centrally networked chassis systems

Porsche uses a centrally networked control system for the Taycan chassis. The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time. The innovative chassis systems include adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology including PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) electronic damper control, as well as the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control Sport (PDCC Sport) electromechanical roll stabilisation system including Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus). The all-wheel drive control with two electric motors and the recuperation system are unique. At up to 265 kW, the potential recuperation power is significantly higher than that of competitors. Driving tests have shown that approximately 90 percent of everyday braking is performed by the electric machines alone – without the hydraulic wheel brakes being activated.

The profile of the different driving modes basically follows the same philosophy as in other Porsche model series. This is supplemented by special settings which enable optimum use of the purely electric drive. Four driving modes are available: “Range”, “Normal”, “Sport” and “Sport Plus”. In addition, individual systems can be configured as required in the “Individual” mode.

A world premiere on three continents at the same time

The Porsche Taycan’s world premiere took place simultaneously in North America, China and Europe with each event location symbolising a form of sustainable energy management. Located at the border between the US state of New York and the Canadian province of Ontario, Niagara Falls represented hydropower, meanwhile a solar farm in Neuhardenberg, near Berlin represented solar power and a wind farm on Pingtan Island, around 150 kilometres from the Chinese city of Fuzhou in the province of Fujian represented wind power.

Model availability and pricing for the Taycan across the Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE region will be announced in the first half of 2020.

The exclusive NOVITEC for the Tesla Model 3

As for the other two Tesla models, the NOVITEC designers created aerodynamic-enhancement components for the Model 3 that give the sedan a sportier appearance and optimize the aerodynamics. The precise-fit body styling parts are manufactured with a naked-carbon finish. Their visible carbon structure adds even more sporty touch to the small Tesla. Alternatively, they can also be painted in vehicle or contrasting color like all NOVITEC body styling components.

The NOVITEC front spoiler lip attaches to the lower end of the production fascia and lends the Model 3 a more distinctive face. What is more: Their sophisticated shape also reduces front-axle lit at high speeds, which further optimizes the directional stability.

Tailor-made hi-tech forged wheels round off the exclusive NOVITEC look. They are produced by American premium manufacturer Vossen, which specializes in exclusive alloy wheels for the world’s most exciting cars.

NOVITEC designed tailor-made 21-inch wheels for the Model 3, which are manufactured using a hi-tech forging process. The NOVITEC NV2 wheels stand out with their elaborate production process. In addition, they feature an unusual design with five double-spokes slanted like a windmill.

This design gives the electric car a markedly dynamic appearance. What is more: These wheels also optimize the ventilation and cooling of the brakes, because each NOVITEC NV 2 wheel is manufactured for a specific corner of the vehicle, front left or right and rear left or right. As a result, the spokes always spin in the airstream in the aerodynamically optimal direction, which has a positive impact on brake cooling and simply looks right, especially when the vehicle is stationary.

However, this design ingenuity is not the only thing that sets the co-creation of NOVITEC and Vossen apart from the masses: The NV2 wheels for the Tesla come in 72 different color variants and optionally also with a brushed or polished surface.

The NOVITEC NV2 forged rims make optimal use of the space under the wheel arches. The wheels of size 9Jx21 on the front axle are mounted with high-performance tires of size 245/30 ZR 21. The rear axle rolls on size 10Jx21 rims with 295/25 ZR 21 tires.

Tesla Model 3 NOVITEC T3

The large wheels not only give the Model 3 an even more exquisite appearance, they also make the handling more agile, be it with rear- or all-wheel drive. Tailor-made NOVITEC suspension solutions can further enhance the handling. There are tailor-made sport springs to be combined with the production shocks of both drivetrain layouts. They lower the ride height of the Tesla by about 30 millimeters.

Anyone looking to give the suspension an even sportier setup and tailor the ride height to his or her personal preferences as well will find the NOVITEC aluminum sport suspension to be perfect for their purposes. It offers a sporty-comfortable ride and can lower the vehicle by up to 40 millimeters.

The ride-height lowering further reduces aerodynamic drag, which can cut power consumption on long-distance routes by up to seven percent.

Hyundai’s Elevate: Walking Car Concept is a Highlight of CES 2019

Hyundai’s Elevate ‘walking car’ concept has emerged as an automotive highlight of the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Described as the first Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV), the design blends technology found in electric cars and robots, allowing it to traverse terrain beyond the limitations of even the most capable off-road vehicle.

The concept is primarily designed to provide efficient, rapid, resilient transportation for disaster assistance, such as search-and-rescue and humanitarian aid missions. Wheels with hub-mounted electric motors are attached to extendable robotic legs, so the vehicle can drive, walk or climb over obstacles.

At CES, engineers have used a working scale model to demonstrate the design in action. A full-size version could climb over obstacles 1.5 meters tall, or stride across a gap 1.5 meters wide. A variety of different bodies can be swapped on and off the modular chassis, depending on need.

“When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field. They have to go the rest of the way by foot. Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete,” said John Suh, Vice President and Head of Hyundai CRADLE, the carmaker’s venturing and open innovation business.

“This technology goes well beyond emergency situations. People living with disabilities worldwide that don’t have access to an ADA [wheelchair] ramp could hail an autonomous Hyundai Elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in. The possibilities are limitless.”

Elevate is the result of almost three years’ work in collaboration with industrial design consultancy, Sundberg-Frear, as part of Hyundai’s mission to create new ‘last mile’ mobility technologies and solutions. Elevate’s engineering features include:

  • Robotic legs with five degrees of freedom plus in-wheel propulsion
  • Ability to walk in mammalian and reptilian style gaits for omnidirectional motion
  • Capable of climbing a 1.5-meter vertical wall
  • Step over a 1.5-meter gap
  • Non-back drivable motors enable the legs to lock in any position
  • Modular electric vehicle platform

“By combining the power of robotics with Hyundai’s latest EV technology, Elevate has the ability to take people where no car has been before, and redefine our perception of vehicular freedom,” said David Byron, design manager, Sundberg-Ferar. “Imagine a car stranded in a snow ditch just 10 feet off the highway being able to walk or climb over the treacherous terrain, back to the road potentially saving its injured passengers – this is the future of vehicular mobility.”

Elevate is a product of Hyundai’s future mobility roadmap, showcased at CES 2019, highlighting the company’s strategy to create freedom in mobility for customers. Hyundai’s vision is based on three key areas: developments in ‘Open Innovation’, the company’s electric vehicle (EV) strategy, and its strategy to gain global leadership in connected mobility.

Abu Dhabi’s bid to create a green metropolis and reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cars has received a new boost with Al Masaood Automobiles’ launch of Renault Zoe’s latest electric car model across the emirate. The zero emissions car’s reach is double the distance range compared to the previous generation of Renault Zoe. The new battery being used in the car is made from high-energy density lithium-ion technology which has been developed in partnership with LG Chem and engineered to increase storage capacity while not compromising on weight and space. It is strategically integrated within the vehicle coupled with advanced air circulation system and electronic management that helps maintain the battery’s temperature at consistent level. This feature makes the EV run economically and an ideal car for countries such as the UAE where temperature goes high during summers.

Hyundai’s New Emission-free Bus and Coach Purify Air as They Move

Hyundai Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle that purifies the air as it moves is the latest innovation from Hyundai Motor Company. The FCEV bus and coach charge in just 15 minutes and boast a driving range of 460km – roughly 6.5 times the charging efficiency of other battery electric mass transit vehicles on the market.

“Hyundai Motor Company has long recognized the importance of sustainability and strived to develop low-emission vehicles,” said Tony Kim, Head of Hyundai Commercial Vehicle Africa & Middle East Regional Headquarters.

“Ever since we launched a compressed natural gas bus in 2000, our work has brought about tangible outcomes and we have consistently taken the lead in meeting global demand for environmentally friendly transport.”

Both models feature Hyundai’s world-leading proprietary fuel cell electric vehicle technology, as well as a button-driven gearbox and a digital cluster suitable for electric driving.

Boasting a futuristic appearance, they made a pilot operation at 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Hyundai FCEV coaches and buses were designed by Hyundai Motor Company in response to increased competition between manufacturers. Hyundai Commercial Vehicle is developing various eco-friendly commercial vehicles, including fuel cell electric buses and battery electric buses suitable for various uses and environments.

“Global demand for commercial vehicles has been declining for the past three years and we anticipate this trend will continue throughout 2018,” said Kim.

“For this reason, competition amongst manufacturers has intensified. Having said that, Hyundai Commercial Vehicles Africa & Middle East exported about 6,000 units during the first half of this year – a figure that is almost double that shifted during the same period last year.”

Kim attributed CV’s healthy export record to two factors, adding: “We have won major fleet deals in Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco. We have also developed new markets, including Libya and some other African countries.”

Nissan LEAF NISMO to make world debut

The Nissan LEAF NISMO will go on sale July 31 in Japan – combining, for the first time, the excitement and advanced technologies of the world’s best-selling electric car with the sporty image and performance of the NISMO road car series.
The model is based on the new Nissan LEAF, which debuted in October 2017. The new LEAF offers the exhilarating acceleration and environmental performance of a 100% electric powertrain, a dynamic design, and advanced technologies such as e-Pedal and the ProPILOT and ProPILOT Park autonomous driving features. The Nissan LEAF NISMO features a custom tuning computer for more responsive acceleration, custom tires, and suspension for improved handling and ride comfort, and stylish exterior and interior design.

The new Nissan LEAF is the icon of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, the company’s vision for changing how cars are powered, driven and integrated into society. It has won several awards for its cutting-edge technology and zero-emission performance. The LEAF won the “2018 World Green Car” award at the New York International Auto Show and has received 5-star safety ratings from both the Japan New Car Assessment Program and the European New Car Assessment Program.

Nissan aims to sell 1 million electrified vehicles a year, including the new Nissan LEAF, globally by fiscal 2022.

Exterior design
The Nissan LEAF NISMO features the characteristic layered double wings of the NISMO road car series, improving downforce without compromising drag coefficient. Signaling the high-performance driving provided by its low center of gravity, the exterior also includes custom 18-inch aluminum wheels that minimize air resistance.

The nine available body colors include the NISMO series’ custom Brilliant Silver (M)/Super Black two-tone and the Dark Metal Grey (M)/Super Black two-tone.

Interior design
The sporty interior appeals to the senses with prominent use of NISMO’s custom red accents, including the three-spoke steering wheel with a red center mark. The instrument panel features a custom carbon-like finish, and the electronic shift has a gun metal chrome finish.

Chassis performance
The Nissan LEAF NISMO’s dedicated 18-inch high-grip tires and custom suspension system provide a comfortable ride and stable handling. Its custom-tuned electric power steering and Intelligent Trace Control (cornering stabilization system) provide high stability and lane-tracing abilities.

Comfortable acceleration
The custom tuning computer in the Nissan LEAF NISMO allows for a delicate but strong acceleration response. This results in comfortable driving on both city streets and winding roads.

GO I-PACE APP PUTS ELECTRIC JAGUAR IN YOUR POCKET

Jaguar has launched an intelligent app to help drivers experience life with its all-electric I-PACE before even getting behind the wheel ” Go I-PACE App “

The Go I-PACE app captures journey data to calculate potential cost savings, show how much battery would be used per trip and tell users how many charges they would need in a week if they were driving the I-PACE.

As it builds a unique picture of a vehicle’s use, the app will even show how many journeys, if any, would have needed a stop to charge the EV’s advanced Lithium-ion battery. Journeys over 50 miles represent only two per cent of all UK trips*. I-PACE, which has a maximum range of 298 miles (WLTP), could complete 98 per cent of these using just a fraction of a single charge.

When opening the app, users can enter the real-world fuel economy of their existing vehicle to calculate the cost savings switching to the I-PACE would deliver. Once enough journeys have been logged, the app will estimate the range drivers can expect to achieve from a full charge. An interactive map allows users to search for the nearest charging points along a chosen route or within a local area.

Compatible with Apple operating systems, the Go I-PACE app runs in the background and uses the device’s location services to track individual journeys. It can also distinguish between different modes of transport to make sure it collects accurate data, even prompting users to confirm that individual trips were made by car for unusual routes – for instance on journeys made by cycling rather than behind the wheel.

Robert Llewelyn, EV expert, said: “It can be hard for drivers to understand how an EV would fit into their day-to-day lives. The Go I-PACE app makes this possible by providing personalised information about how the Jaguar I-PACE could work for them based on real-world data. I’ve no doubt the app will surprise many users with the scale of the potential cost savings and by revealing how little change to their driving habits I-PACE ownership would actually make.”

Calculations are based on accredited data sources, using national monthly electricity, petrol and diesel costs from market-appropriate government information.

The Jaguar I-PACE can achieve a 0-80 per cent charge in 40 minutes (100kW DC) and can achieve the same level in just over 10 hours using a residential AC wall box (7kW), ideal for overnight charging at home. When plugged in, owners can even choose the time at which their vehicle begins charging, to take advantage of cheaper energy tariffs.

A suite of smart range-optimising technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system that, when plugged in, will automatically raise or lower the temperature of the battery to maximise range ahead of driving away.

Owners can also take advantage of software updates that ensure I-PACE is always running the latest version.

VOLKSWAGEN I.D. R PIKES PEAK THRILLS FANS WITH RECORD RUN AT GOODWOOD

The I.D. R Pikes Peak has wrapped up its next record. Romain Dumas (F) set a new record for electric cars of 43.86 seconds in Volkswagen’s first fully-electric racing car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Following his record-breaking exploits at the legendary Pikes Peak International Hill Climb just three weeks ago, Dumas beat the previous fastest time for electric cars on the Goodwood Hillclimb, which has stood since 2013, by 3.48 seconds. The all-time record still belongs to Nick Heidfeld (D). The former Formula 1 driver completed the 1.86-kilometre route in 41.6 seconds at the wheel of a McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 Formula 1 car in 1999.

“The I.D. R Pikes Peak has once again proven emphatically that it is a fantastic ambassador for our fully-electric I.D. family,” said Dr. Herbert Diess, the Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG and Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. “I would like to thank the whole team. After the great success on Pikes Peak, at Goodwood we have shown once again how impressive the performance of an electric racing car can be. That is a very good preparation for our great electric car offensive which is starting next year.”

Volkswagen driver Romain Dumas was delighted: “Goodwood is an absolutely fantastic event and I am more than happy that we won in front of such a great crowd of motorsport enthusiasts,” said the 40-year-old after his latest record-breaking drive. “The hill climb track is short but often dirty and therefore you should definitely not underestimate it. In any case it is a great honour to drive here at Goodwood. You meet so many fantastic drivers, and the cars and motorcycles here span a century of motorsport. It is one of a kind.” Volkswagen Motorsport Director Sven Smeets was also a happy man: “Although the route is not even two kilometres long, we once again showed what the I.D. R Pikes Peak is capable of. Volkswagen is committed to electromobility and we want to take every opportunity to show how emotional this topic can be, before Volkswagen launches its first fully-electric range as of 2020.”

More than 200,000 people visited the Goodwood Festival of Speed from 12 to 15 July, as the event in the south of England celebrated its 25th anniversary. The homage to motorsport on the Duke of Richmond’s estate is the largest event of its type in the world. This year’s starter list once was once again a who’s who of motorsport. Dumas in the 500-kW (680-PS) I.D. R Pikes Peak was joined at Goodwood by Hans-Joachim “Strietzel” Stuck (D) and Jochi Kleint (D) in the 480-kW (652-PS) 1987 Volkswagen Golf MkII Bi-Motor Pikes Peak. Other big names in action included Giacomo Agostini (I), Derek Bell (GB), Emerson Fittipaldi (BR), Mika Häkkinen (FIN), Tom Kristensen (DK), Nick Mason (GB), Sébastien Ogier (F), Richard Petty (USA), Walter Röhrl (D) and Sir Jackie Stewart (GB).

BMW Group expands footprint in China with BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture

The BMW Group is expanding its footprint in China. In the presence of China’s Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, the BMW Group and its partner Brilliance Automotive Group Holdings signed a long-term framework agreement to further expand their joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). BBA is increasing the capacity of its two local production facilities Tiexi and Dadong in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, to a total of 520,000 BMW brand vehicles in 2019. Furthermore, the all-electric BMW iX3 produced by BBA is planned for export to markets outside of China.

“Today’s signing represents a new chapter in the success story of our BMW Brilliance Automotive joint venture,” said Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG. “Our agreement sets a long-term framework for our future in China – a future involving continued investment, further growth and a clear commitment to the development and production of electric vehicles. The next chapter of our cooperation has the potential to go beyond our existing motto – in China, for China. The all-electric BMW iX3, produced by BBA from 2020, will find customers around the world,” elaborated Krüger.

Around 560,000 BMW brand vehicles were delivered to customers in China in 2017 – more than in the next two largest markets, the US and Germany, combined. Two-thirds of all BMW vehicles sold in China were produced by BBA last year. Local production of the new BMW X3 in China started in May as scheduled and the ramp-up in the second half of the year is expected to further accelerate growth in the world’s largest automotive market. The BMW X3 is the sixth BMW model localized in China.

“BBA is our cornerstone for the BMW brand’s sustained success in its largest market,” said Nicolas Peter, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Finance. “This year marks our joint venture’s 15th anniversary. In addition to the two automobile production locations, BBA also runs an engine plant, which includes a battery factory for the electrified BMW brand vehicles produced locally in Shenyang. This is the first battery factory operated by a premium automobile manufacturer in China. Local production of the BMW iX3, the first all-electric core model of the BMW brand, will start in 2020 in Shenyang. The BMW iX3 is also intended for export to markets outside of China.

Today BBA already employs over 800 professionals in its R&D facilities, three-quarters of whom are Chinese. In total, BBA employs more than 16,800 associates. Since 2009, BMW Brilliance Automotive has invested more than 52 billion RMB in its plants in Shenyang. The 2 millionth BMW produced in China rolled off the production line in January 2018.
