The Tuning in Essen Motor Show 2018

When your heart beats faster and your pulse vibrates it can only be ESSEN Motor Show 2018.

From December 1 to 9, 2018, the Essen Motor Show 2018 brought them all together: Sports car fans, tuners, motorsportsmen, motorsports women and vintage vehicle friends to celebrate the 51st lap of the performance festival at Messe Essen.

Over 500 exhibitors and a spectacular supporting programme are connecting people and styles. The emotional format for success is arousing the enthusiasm of generations and genders across the board. Amongst other highlights, a special show with sporty convertibles and live action in the Motorsports Arena are ensuring great emotions.

The exhibitors included Continental, Hankook, Mercedes FanWorld, Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, Renault Motorsport, Skoda, Toyo Tires and VW Motorsport. They displayed new sports cars, tyres and racing vehicles.

For tuners, the Essen Motor Show is a festival: Here, numerous manufacturers are presenting new vehicles and accessories for the coming season including ABT Sportsline, BBS, Brabus, Eisenmann Exhaust Systems, H&R Spezialfedern, KW automotive, OZ Deutschland, Remus Innovation and Sonax. Moreover, hip tuning forges such as JP Performance, Liberty Walk, Sidney Industries and Vossen Wheels also were present at the starting line in Essen.

Not to forget The special show called the tuningXperience is the tuning trend show par excellence: Around 160 private owners from Europe presented their often prizewinning vehicles. Here, many of the parts offered at the Essen Motor Show can be admired in the assembled condition. The spectrum of the exhibits ranges from the moderate daily driver to the detail-loving high-end showcar.

Vehicles in motorsports looks are trendy, frequently with widebodies, large wings and carbon parts. The appearances are often completed by sporty brake systems and wheel rims as well as by film applications in motorsports designs. Also hip: tuned youngtimers, particularly from German makes such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche and VW.
The heart chamber of the Essen Motor Show is the Motorsports Arena: Here, the engines are roaring, the tyres are screeching and the adrenaline level is rising up to record-breaking values. The racing atmosphere is enticing thousands of visitors into the arena every day. The programme featured drift shows, taxi rides for visitors and presentations by the exhibitors. In the neighboring pit lane in Hall 5, everything is also revolving around motorsports: Racing series and circuits such as the Hockenheimring and the Nürburgring had their booths here.

In Hall 3, a selection of design cars and crazy cars were awaiting those people who like it even more individual. These eccentric one-offs are showing that a lot is possible beyond each series: either as a daring design for the future of mobility or simply as a funmobile.

Both have their places at the Essen Motor Show which also offers a permanent setting to e-mobility. The car sharing provider RUHRAUTOe is presenting a selection of electrically driven vehicles. These include the fair premieres of the following models: BMW i8 Roadster (2018), Nissan eNV200 (2018), Renault Master Z.E. 33 (2019), Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 (2018) and Tesla Model 3 (US) (2018).

Essen Motor Show 2018 is a true show to be considered for tuning lovers.

See you next year

Techno-Classica continued to set unmatched records. For five days, it again made Essen the capital of the classic vehicle universe and, with over 188,000 guests, was the classic vehicle salon with the largest public anywhere in the world.

For a lot of years, Techno-Classica has regularly occupied the entire fair site in Essen with around 1,250 exhibitors from over 30 countries. The ranges offered by them encompassed around 2,700 connoisseurs’ and collectors’ vehicles from the VW Polo youngtimer to the rare Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 from 1946 with spectacular Pinin Farina bodywork.

What significance the automobile manufacturers attach to Techno-Classica Essen was also illustrated by the fact that no fewer than two major makes used the classic vehicle fair as the arena for German premieres in order to present new models as the logical updating of their histories in connection with their classic predecessors: Mercedes-Benz showed the new G Class to the German public for the first time and, on the occasion of the 40th birthday of the legendary Peugeot 504, Peugeot presented its current counterpart, the brand-new Peugeot 508.

For the trade in classic automobiles, the fair in Essen was once more shown to be a trend barometer: “We use Techno-Classica as an indicator for future market developments – due to the intensive exchange of experience with a lot of experts during the fair, it serves us as a mood barometer,” confirmed Martin Stromberg, Managing Director of Classic Data, the oldest and market-leading company for the valuation of classic vehicles in Germany. And renowned professional dealers such as Eberhard Thiesen from Hamburg, Axel Schuette from Oerlinghausen, Hyman Classics from St. Louis, Missouri/USA or Nico Aaldering who founded the Gallery Aaldering in Brummen/Netherlands in 1975 unanimously reported very good sales results. No wonder: The range on offer particularly in the premium sector was excellent and a selection of the finest of the best. That was also shown by the classic vehicle which an international jury chose as the “Best of Show”: a Maserati A6 G 2000 Zagato from 1956 on Axel Schuette’s booth. As one of just three works demonstration vehicles, it was not only perfectly restored but could also present a completely documented history.

According to the general findings, the classic vehicle market has calmed down after the hype in the past years and has become more predictable again – it has consolidated on a high level. The purchasers of vintage and connoisseurs’ vehicles are again taking a closer look, the speculators who emerged with the boom in recent years have left the scene and the enthusiasts are paying realistic prices. Nevertheless, there were again a few outstanding sales in the gigantic range available at Techno-Classica Essen: According to the information from its seller, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster with a hardtop, disc brakes and the rare aluminium engine yielded a fabulous figure of Euro 1.6 million (!) and a BMW M5 from 1993 was worth a respectable amount of Euro 90,000 to one buyer. And rare classic vehicles in perfect condition rapidly found purchasers at realistic prices: “Out of twelve high-value collectors’ automobiles which we presented in Essen, we have sold six from the upper price segment,” reported Rutger H. J. P. Houtkamp, Director of the Dutch Houtkamp-R-Collection.

In 2018, around 200 vintage vehicles and make clubs presented themselves and their services on booths which had fascinating designs in most cases. Every year, S.I.H.A. as the organizer acknowledges their commitment with prizes for the most imaginative presentations. The evergreens amongst the clubs include the Amicale Citroën Internationale which encompasses 70,000 enthusiasts worldwide and presented itself as a club community called “Citroën Street”. Its initiator, Stephan Joest, put it in a nutshell: “Involved for the 30th time; had a lot of fun for the 30th time – at the largest family meeting place on the scene.” However, the global classic vehicle fair is more than just infotainment for the clubs. On this subject, Peter Schneider, Chairman of the Federal Association for Classic Vehicle Clubs (DEUVET), said: “For us, Techno-Classica Essen is the most important podium to present ourselves as the body representing the interests of the classic vehicle scene. We have been involved since the first event. We meet all those partners from the political and industrial fields and from the clubs who are relevant to the subject of vintage vehicles. Here in Essen, there is politicking, too.”

The clubs, the trade and the industry are the supporting pillars of TechnoClassica Essen. They present the whole spectrum of the vintage vehicle hobby. For a lot of years already, the popular public fair has thus also been regarded as an international performance show for the crème de la crème in the restoration sector – e.g. for Hans-Werner Walkling, a renowned vehicle cartwright and restorer from Holzminden: “For me, Techno-Classica Essen offers the best possibilities for reaching an international public and winning over customers.”

No matter whether collectors’ vehicles, model cars, art, car literature, classic vehicle services or spare parts: In Essen, all the visitors have the opportunity to stock up on everything that they need in order to carry out their hobby. It is the lifeblood for vintage vehicles and car history with which both exhibitors and visitors make Techno-Classica Essen the number one. Rüdiger Lange, proprietor of the vintage vehicle adventure worlds called “Classic Remise” in Berlin and Düsseldorf: “At Techno-Classica Essen, I meet the people who are important to me – and the simple mechanic and the large-scale investor respect each other. Here, you can find the entire demoscopic and democratic gamut of our wonderful hobby. If Techno-Classica Essen did not exist, it would have to be invented.”

When S.I.H.A. staged the first Techno-Classica Essen in six halls at Messe Essen for the first time in March 1989, it also had a role model: Retromobile, a chic vintage vehicle salon which had French charm and had been staged in Paris since 1976. Today, 29 years later, the 30th Techno-Classica Essen itself has long since become an ideal model with its distinctive appeal and perfect organisation.

For next year, the global fair will have another highlight up its sleeve: The world’s leading auction house, RM Sotheby’s, has announced that it will organise a spectacular auction in Essen. Maarten ten Holder, Executive Vice President, Head of Europe and Chief Auctioneer of the RM Sotheby’s Group, was not understating when he said: “The classic vehicle market in Europe, especially in Germany, is very strong. We are expecting great success when we conduct an auction with 150 exquisite collectors’ vehicles within the framework of TechnoClassica Essen 2019. Essen will be the place to be.”

The 31st Techno-Classica Essen will take place from April 10 to 14, 2019.

Lamborghini Polo Storico celebrates 50 years of Espada and Islero at Techno Classica Essen 2018

Lamborghini Polo Storico celebrates 50 years of the Espada and Islero on its stand at Techno Classica 2018 in Essen.

One of the two vehicles shown on the stand in Essen is a Series III Espada from 1976. During the ten years in which the Lamborghini Espada was in production, 1968-1978, nearly 1.300 examples were produced in three series (S1: 1968 – 1970, S2: 1970 – 1972, S3: 1972 – 1978), making it the second-best selling model among Lamborghini classic cars.

The Espada displayed, with blue exterior and a mustard interior, is undergoing a full restoration at Lamborghini Polo Storico. Owned by Automobili Lamborghini, once finished in May 2018 it is destined for the factory’s classic fleet and for display in the Lamborghini Museum. During the ten-month project the chassis, body, electrical system and mechanics of the Espada have been fully overhauled, returning it to its original lines according to the original production sheet preserved in the Polo Storico archive, and using exclusively Lamborghini Original Spare Parts.

The Lamborghini Islero, launched in 1968 with just over 220 units built until 1970, was the model that succeeded the Lamborghini 400 GT and equipped with the same 4.0 l V12 engine with 320 hp. On display in Essen is an Islero S in Pallid Green with a Tobacco interior: one of a rare number of S models with 350 hp, only 70 were produced. This version was introduced in 1969, with developments to the bodywork and interior making the car even more luxurious.

Continuing its ongoing commitment to developing the Lamborghini Original Spare Parts inventory for classic cars, Automobili Lamborghini is gradually reproducing original manuals for historic models. In Essen Lamborghini presents reprints of two rare Espada owner manuals (10/70 and 3/73) as well as of the Islero S owner manual in the 50th anniversary year of these models. The new editions have been reprinted replicating the original design, printing and binding processes to ensure authentic reproduction.

Lamborghini Polo Storico is the specialist department located within Lamborghini’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, committed to the restoration and certification of classic Lamborghini cars out of production for at least ten years (from Lamborghini 350 GT to Diablo); the preservation of archives and records; and the provision of original Lamborghini spare parts for classic cars.

Automobili Lamborghini is committed to the manufacture of original spare parts in support of classic models, holding parts that cover over 65% of the classic car parc, and increasing the number of reintroduced parts year-on-year for cars from the 350GT up to Diablo. A further 200 part numbers were added to its catalogues in 2017 alone.

Interview with the Legends of Shelby

Caroll Shelby Interview Essen Motor Show Arab Motor World (1)

Carroll Hall Shelby is an undisputable legend when it comes to the automotive industry, this auto icon is the person behind the most loved roadster of all times the AC Cobra and the iconic overhauled Ford the Shelby Mustang from the 60’s till today.

That being said it is not every day that we in the Middle East get the chance to discuss the legend’s past, present and future with the heirs to the throne.

For the occasion, Arab Motor World got the opportunity to sit down with Aaron Shelby, Caroll Shelby’s Grandson, and Gary Patterson Shelby American Inc.’s president and this is what they had to say.

Caroll Shelby Interview Essen Motor Show Arab Motor World (2)

What’s Shelby’s strategy for the Middle East?

Well, we know for a fact that the Middle East is one of the major markets for Ford and we are there as well part of that strategy. In Dubai, we already have the Shelby Ford F-150 truck and also the Super snake being sold on the market and we will continue to develop our presence in the Middle East and bring in new vehicles and increase our presence in that part of the world.

So what about that beast, the Shelby Raptor. What was the idea behind it and who are your competitors?

The cool thing is that we don’t have a lot of competitors in this market place as this vehicle is designed to perform both off-road and on-road so the Shelby Raptor will perform on a phenomenal level even if you decide to venture off tarmac. We wanted to deliver something that you can drive every day, take it for a weekend cruise and visit your country club and still look phenomenal under any conditions.

What types of roads is this vehicle made for, I mean the Middle East has desert and at the same time some countries have snow?

Well if you have seen our promotional video, you will know that this vehicle is already dune bashing with two wheels in the air and is performing superbly on those type of roads, as for snow well unlike other vehicles this machine is made for all types of roads and weather, it will perform on sand, snow, cold weather, warm weather and it can actually perform almost everywhere.

So what’s coming next for Shelby?

Ah well, during November 2017 we have revealed the Shelby 1000 which is a track upgrade for the Mustang with a 5.2L engine reaching more than 1000 Horsepower. And it is not just about the horsepower it is all about the full systems that comes in to play from suspension, aerodynamics, brakes.. when we fired this baby in our facilities it was phenomenal.

And like Caroll Shelby is known to say: “My favorite car is the next car”. So we are always in constant development and at this point this is what we can share but some secrets are still hidden in the drawer, so you have to wait and see we have more phenomenal vehicles coming in for 2018.

Spending the day with Keskin Wheels and Syron Tires at ESSEN Motor Show 2017

We got the chance to spend the day at Keskin Wheels and Syron Tires stand during the last Essen Motor Show event 2017.

During our visit, we got the chance to have fun, laugh, interact with the staff, talk to drifting and motorsport experts from Syron motorsport team and most importantly felt the engagement and the interest of car tuners in their brands.

It was a snowy day in Essen and very cold outside the Messe Essen however on the inside the warmth welcome of the Keskin Wheels and Syron tires made the balance, the day started with a tour around the Keskin Wheels’ new collection and may I say what a beautiful collection I personally loved the Hurricane design on Keskin wheels I think it will look amazingly beautiful on any European vehicle.

As for Syron Tires, we got the chance to sit with the drifting couple Corinna and Alexandre Graff; Alex is the head of motorsport team at Syron tires, holder of several Guinness World Records in drifting and one of Germany’s top drifter, who explained to us about their experience with Syron tires and how they benefit from the German engineered tire technology whether in car control or controlled drifting.

Later that day, we were joined by two gorgeous models that literally set the stand on fire. The models were posing on the cars on display at Keskin and Syron stand and give the audience a sense of beauty and the beast. And if you think this was fun wait till you get a visit from the killer in scream movies that tried to steal the Keskin Wheels and Syron tires and was faced by forceful resistance from the team and the fans.

We would like to thank the Keskin and Syron team for having us that day, it was a blast both on the entertaining level and on the technology and German engineering knowledge.

We would like to invite our fans and readers to check them out as I believe it will create a revolution in the world of wheels and tires.

50th Essen Motor Show Crosses the Finishing Line Successfully

That was a worthy anniversary: More than 500 exhibitors and 356.500 visitors celebrated the 50th Essen Motor Show from December 1 to 10 – despite the onset of winter on the second weekend. It was colourful, full and diverse at Messe Essen. Exhibitors and fans showed that they were more than satisfied. A large number of automobile manufacturers and tuners used the performance festival for the emotional presentation of their performance vehicles, including a lot of innovations and premieres.

Furthermore, several special shows on the occasion of 50 Years of Mercedes-AMG and 50 Years of Super Sports Cars aroused the enthusiasm of the fans. The sustainably driven vehicles and studies also attracted increased attention.

“The positive impression of the 50th Essen Motor Show will linger for a long time to come. We have received a fantastic response, not only from exhibitors but also from visitors. We are taking this momentum with us,” Oliver P. Kuhrt, CEO of Messe Essen, summarised the good mood.

The partners of the Essen Motor Show also celebrated anniversaries ending in zeros: The General German Automobile Club (ADAC) has been the ideal sponsor of the performance festival for 30 years and the Association of Automobile Tuners (VDAT) celebrated its 30th birthday at the fair.

51 exhibitors from the association were represented at the Essen Motor Show – 15 percent more than the average in the past years. The well-known names included Abt, Brabus, G-Power and Techart.

The happenings at the fair were characterised by the togetherness of the living worlds relating to automobiles: Tuners talked shop with vintage vehicle owners and fathers and sons encountered motorsportsmen and motorsportswomen – the 50th Essen Motor Show connected people who rarely get together otherwise.

At the fair, they were able to convince themselves about the latest developments in tuning: The trends included the upgrading of the interior, e.g. with roll bars, sports seats, carbon parts and LED lighting.

Furthermore, several fashion labels and tuning forges such as JP Performance, Sidney Industries and Simon Motorsport showed that tuning is a lifestyle, too.

The preparations are in full swing: The next Essen Motor Show will be open at Messe Essen from December 1 to 9, 2018 (Preview Day: November 30).
