Audi with electrifying fightbacks in Paris

In round eight of the Formula E electric racing series in Paris, Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt again electrified the crowd with spectacular fightbacks. After a difficult qualifying, the two Audi drivers gained a total of eleven positions in the race. Di Grassi finished runner-up for the third consecutive time and Abt advanced from 14th on the grid to seventh position.

In free practice in the morning, reigning champion di Grassi managed to set a new track record on the city street circuit near the Eiffel Tower. His teammate, Daniel Abt, was only a little slower. However, in qualifying, both drivers at relatively low track temperatures had difficulties getting the tires to work optimally. Di Grassi missed the “Super Pole” of the top five by a razor-thin margin of 0.005 seconds. Abt was only three tenths of a second slower. Because of the extremely fierce competition in Formula E, the German ended up in 14th position – on a track on which overtaking is considered to be particularly difficult.

As on many other occasions this season, both Audi drivers subsequently managed to fully use the potential of the Audi e-tron FE04. Abt in the first half overtook seven competitors. Shortly before the end of the race, he used the Fanboost to overtake former champion Sébastien Buemi in his Renault. On the last lap, the Swiss forced the issue and pushed past Abt again.

Di Grassi gained one position at the start. In the first half of the race, he saved so much energy that he was able to drive two laps longer than the front runners. After a quick pit stop by Team Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, the Brazilian advanced to fourth position. With a series of fastest laps he closed the gap to the front runners, overtook Rome winner Sam Bird as well as André Lotterer on the last lap who had been running in second position up to that point.

“That was an incredible race and an extremely tough one,” said di Grassi following his third second place in succession and his 23rd podium in total in the electric racing series. “In the first part of the race, I saved energy. In the second part, I was able to go for all-out attack and clinch the trophy for second place. I’m overjoyed!”

“What a race in Paris,” said Team Principal Allan McNish. “The last lap was especially intense. We saw brilliant fightbacks by Lucas and Daniel. Daniel is my driver of the day. In a pre-race meeting he said that he’s able to overtake in Paris even though everyone says that that’s impossible. He kept his word. It’s a shame that Buemi’s rough maneuver at the end cost him places. Lucas was again very strong with second and another fastest lap.”

In front of Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler improved to third position in the teams’ standings of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Lucas di Grassi advanced to fifth position in the drivers’ classification and before Audi’s round on home soil in Berlin on May 19 is ranked two points ahead of his teammate Daniel Abt.

NISSAN REVEALS CONCEPT LIVERY FOR ITS FORMULA E DEBUT SEASON

Nissan-Formula-E-Arab-Motor-World

Nissan has taken the next steps toward its debut in the all-electric ABB FIA Formula E Championship by revealing its concept livery at the Geneva Motor Show.

At last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan – the world’s leading mass-market zero-emission vehicle manufacturer – announced it would debut in Formula E from season five which is expected to begin in December 2018.

As part of the announcement, Nissan unveiled its color scheme for the season five Formula E car, which features striking new aerodynamics and an entirely new battery and powertrain package.

The livery for Nissan’s Formula E program was designed by Nissan’s Global Design team in Japan.

“At first glance the season five Formula E car looked to our design team like an EV-powered supersonic bird in flight,” said Alfonso Albaisa, senior vice president of global design at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “Naturally this initial reaction from the team started us on a path that captured a sense of a form breaking free of resistance and gravity. Formula E racers are virtually silent, with explosive speed bursts thus naturally we turned to Doppler when designing the livery.  The combination of the sonic pulse of the Doppler effect and the released power of a sonic boom inspired our celebration of EV Racing!”

The new package provides more power, more range and eliminates the need for the mid-race car swap which has been used in the first four seasons of the championship.

“Nissan is proud to be an innovator in electric vehicles on the road with the Nissan LEAF completing more than four billion zero-emission kilometers around the world*. Now, we want to bring that EV expertise to motorsport,” said Jose Munoz, Chief Performance Officer, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

“The new Formula E car is being shown live in public for the first time this morning, and we’re very excited to reveal Nissan’s livery for our debut. The ability for Nissan to use this championship as a key development platform for our EV technologies and to be able to race in major city centers around the world makes it a perfect vehicle for us to showcase Nissan Intelligent Mobility.”

Nissan Intelligent Mobility is the company’s strategy to redefine how its vehicles are driven, powered and integrated into society.

While the new Nissan Formula E car livery was revealed for the first time, work has been underway on developing the all-new technical package for many months as Nissan prepares for its debut.

Nissan is working with its partner Renault to leverage expertise and development already available, in keeping with the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi automotive partnership’s focus on collaboration and maximizing synergies to boost competitiveness. Additional details, including structure and drivers, will be announced at a later time.

“Nissan is bringing a lot to the table with our expertise in EV technology for the road and bringing it to the race track, said Nissan global motorsport director, Michael Carcamo.

“The level of competition in the Formula E championship is on the rise and we’re eagerly awaiting the unique engineering challenge ahead. We’re entering the championship on a level playing field this year with every manufacturer competing with a brand new car, battery and powertrain combination from season five.”

Season five of the ABB FIA Formula E championship is expected to visit major international cities including Hong Kong, Berlin, Zurich, Rome and New York. The new car that will debut in season five is scheduled to race in the Formula E championship for the next three seasons.

Further details regarding Nissan’s drivers and other technical and marketing partners for its Formula E debut are expected to be announced later this year.

Nissan Electric Vehicle ambassador, Margot Robbie, revealed during her first ever Facebook livestream that Nissan will premiere its new Formula E electric concept livery at the Geneva Motor Show (March 6th).

In another first, the cameras, lights and equipment used to broadcast the live appearance were powered by the new Nissan LEAF battery.

Nissan announced last October that it will enter the fast-growing Formula E series in the 2018/19 season. The all-electric series gives Nissan a highly visible global platform from which to spread the message of Nissan Intelligent Mobility – the three-pillar strategy to redefine how its vehicles are driven, powered and integrated into society.

Last October, Margot announced the Nissan Electric Ecosystem which aims to transform the way you drive and live, and most recently, she announced three new Nissan sustainability pilot projects at Futures 3.0 in Oslo. The pilot projects aim to harness the skills, ingenuity and experience of Nissan’s global workforce to improve energy access and disaster relief.

Margot Robbie says; “The world is going electric and technology is getting smarter. Even the cameras today were powered using the Nissan LEAF – something I never thought a car would be able to do. It’s crazy in a way but it’s another simple demonstration of how we can change the way we drive and live to create a cleaner and more sustainable world for everyone.”

Award winning Margot Robbie is a world famous Australian actress and producer. She has recently been nominated for best ‘Actress in a Leading Role’ in the 2018 Academy Awards for her role as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya (2017).

PANASONIC JAGUAR RACING SET THEIR SIGHTS ON MARRAKESH E-PRIX

Leaving behind the bright lights of Hong Kong, Panasonic Jaguar Racing head to the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh, Morocco, for the next installment of the FIA Formula E Championship.

The third E-Prix of the season, on 13 January, starts at the Circuit International Automobile Moulay El Hassan before winding its way through the streets of Marrakesh. In the shadow of the city’s world-famous medina, the 1.86 mile track is one of the longest in the series, pushing teams to prioritize energy management.

The British team made a strong start in Hong Kong, matching the same number of points awarded in the whole of season three. Former champion Nelson Piquet Jr showed signs of what is to come, drawing on his experience and knowledge to secure the team’s first points of the season. In race two, Mitch Evans reached Super Pole for the first time and recorded the team’s first ever podium in Formula E.

Nelson Piquet Jr, #3:

My first weekend racing with Panasonic Jaguar Racing exceeded expectations. To start the season having scored points is positive – but the work doesn’t stop there. Mitch and I will be working closely in Marrakesh to make sure we are competing with the front-running teams and fighting for more points. We have shown our potential but it’s a long season and we still have improvements we can make.

Mitch Evans, #20:

Hong Kong was an exciting start to the season, and a great boost for Jaguar. The Jaguar I-TYPE 2 feels a lot quicker than last season’s racecar and you can really feel the benefits of the changes we’ve made. Marrakesh is a very different circuit and we will need to focus to make sure that we are racing efficiently and competitively. Points are hard won in Formula E but we are not afraid of hard work.

Panasonic Jaguar Racing recently announced that Paul Di Resta and Pietro Fittipaldi will drive the Jaguar I-TYPE 2 for the British team at the Formula E Rookie test day on Sunday 14 January following the Marrakesh E-Prix.

James Barclay, Team Director, Panasonic Jaguar Racing, said:

Pietro has had a great season, recently being crowned Formula V8 3.5 champion, and Paul will bring key learnings from his career in Formula 1. It provides Jaguar an excellent opportunity to test the Jaguar I-TYPE 2 with new drivers and continue our development and performance as a team. We are looking forward to welcoming both drivers to the team, and providing them with their first experience of Formula E.”
