Cadillac Shows Brand’s First Fully Electric EV

Cadillac furthered its recent product blitz today with the reveal of the brand’s first EV. This will be the first model derived from GM’s future EV platform. GM announced on Friday that Cadillac will be at the vanguard of the company’s move towards an all-electric future.

“Cadillac’s EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world,” said Steve Carlisle, president of Cadillac. “It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility.”

The Cadillac EV’s name and additional details will be revealed closer to launch. Today’s announcement is part of Cadillac’s aggressive product acceleration announced this week — in addition to revealing the all-new XT6 crossover, the company also hinted at both a future Escalade and an upcoming performance sedan. Overall, Cadillac will introduce new models at the rate of roughly one every six months through 2021.

GM’s future EV platform, which Cadillac will be the first to use, will be flexible, allowing the company to respond quickly to customer preferences with a relatively short design and development lead time. The Cadillac portfolio will eventually benefit from a variety of body styles that can be spun off this architecture.

The most advanced components within this platform are the drive units and battery cells, both of which are being designed for maximum usability throughout GM vehicle lineups in different countries. The EVs can be configured in front-, rear- or all-wheel drive, and the output of their battery systems will be adjustable based on vehicle and customer needs.

Ten facts that distinguish the Escalade’s innovative 10-speed transmission

Engineers for the 2018 Cadillac Escalade ’s new 10-speed automatic transmission have built on the experience of the previously critically acclaimed Hydra-Matic multispeed transmissions to push its performance, refinement and efficiency advantages to a new threshold. The 10-speed automatic transmission is an all-new design – and the first-ever application in an SUV – with a wider, 7.39 overall gear ratio spread, that enables the Escalade’s powerful and efficient 6.2L V-8 engine to achieve a more immediate feeling of performance.

The Escalade has long defined spacious luxury driving with its modern design, powerful capability and lavish amenities that keep luxury firmly in the driver’s seat. The premium Cadillac experience is further enhanced with the unique performance for one of the world’s best dual-clutch transmissions, providing quick, smooth shifts and proving an upgrade in its road manner.

“Customers have often looked up to the Cadillac’s flagship Escalade as setting the standard for big-size luxury SUVs, especially given the high reputation it holds when it comes to versatility and premium styling. The 2018 Escalade is redefining luxury through prevailing powertrain, sophisticated cabin and cutting-edge technologies that is exceptionally emphasized through the new 10-speed transmission, dominating any direct comparisons.”

Developed by General Motors and applied on Cadillac’s full-size premium SUV, the 10-speed has four simple gear sets and six clutches: two brake clutches and four rotating clutches. That’s only one more clutch than the previous eight-speed, despite having two more forward gears, contributing further to the compact packaging, while also improving spin losses to enhance fuel efficiency.

Here are the top ten facts that make the 10-speed transmission on the 2018 Cadillac Escalade stand out.

  1. Improved efficiency

With the update of the wider overall ratio spread, the new 10-speed transmission enables a lower numerical top gear ratio – an attribute that reduces engine speed on the highway.

  1. Quicker shifts for better performance

Coupled with a 6.2-liter V8 engine, rated at an SAE-certified 420 horsepower, the 10L80’s quick shifts help the Escalade’s engine achieve a more immediate feeling of performance, as the perfect gear is available whenever the driver tips into the engine’s power reserve.

  1. Precise and smooth shift feel

Shorter steps between gears and proprietary controls provide a quick, seamless shifting experience for the Escalade driver. Thus, making the new transmission more efficient in each of its gears than the six- and eight-speed transmissions it replaces.

  1. Fuel efficiency

The wider overall ratio enables a lower numerical top gear ratio, thus, contributing greater fuel efficiency in comparison to the eight-speed transmission. The 10-speed automatic has lower friction that also adds to greater fuel efficiency.

  1. Same size, double the power

With so much power packed into the 10–speed transmission, it may come as a surprise that there is no significant increase in the size. The 10-speed is approximately the same size as the six- and eight-speed transmissions, minimizing changes to vehicle interfaces.

  1. Hydraulic pumps: redefined

As the clutches in an automatic transmission are hydraulically actuated and controlled, the new 10-speed transmission relies on two special pumps to provide the necessary hydraulic muscle. Hydraulically controlled and stimulated, the clutches are part of an automatic transmission that relies on two pumps that work to efficiently produce the hydraulics needed.

  1. Reduced spin losses

Friction-reducing design features, including all-new ultra-low viscosity transmission fluid, internal thermal bypass, minimal number of non-applied clutches and other lower mechanical spin losses, contribute to the 10-speed’s effect on improved vehicle efficiency.

  1. Transmission fluidity

The new 10-speed transmission enables the fluid to reach a viscosity of 4.5 centistokes, thus, significantly reducing friction and the workload for the hydraulic pumps.

  1. Wider gear ratio speed

The 2018 Cadillac Escalade has a wide spread of ratios between the first and the tenth gear. The increase in size of the gear to 7.3 allows for a smoother run and allows the car to stay in the selected gear for longer when driving on the highway.

  1. GM control system

World-class shift time quickness and responsiveness are accomplished by leveraging the base transmission hardware in concert with GM exclusively developed algorithms, software and calibrations. An externally mounted electronic control module executes millions of controls instructions every second.

Highlighted by a powerful and efficient engine enhanced with the new standard 10-speed transmission, the 2018 Escalade’s performance is channeled to a sophisticated chassis and suspension system, engineered for a great feeling of solidity and a smooth, quiet ride. Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system, is also a standard feature on the 2018 Escalade, contributing to a precisely controlled driving performance.

Groundbreaking Cargo Box Capability and Materials

Debuting first on the 2019 Sierra Denali and SLT, the all-new Sierra AT4 also comes standard with the industry-first MultiPro Tailgate — the segment’s most innovative tailgate ever. The MultiPro Tailgate features six unique functions and positions, offering enhanced second-tier loading and load-stop solutions, a standing workstation mode and easier access to items in the box.

Later in the model year, the 2019 Sierra AT4 will offer an available GMC exclusive and industry-first carbon fiber box — the CarbonPro — developed to increase the truck’s durability, efficiency and functionality. It replaces the standard steel inner panels and floor with a lightweight, purpose-designed carbon fiber composite that offers best-in-class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance, making it the most durable pickup box in the segment.

The CarbonPro box combined with our MultiPro Tailgate makes the task of loading and unloading objects such as motorcycles or quads much easier than ever before. The CarbonPro box was designed specifically with three molded in wheel indents in the front bulkhead of the box to locate and secure the front tires. Thanks to added tie-down hooks located in the corners and center bulkhead, and new centralized LED lighting, the task of loading and securing motorcycles and bikes has never been easier. A 110V outlet in the rear routes power to the tools and supplies needed for a day at the track or on the trails.

When it comes to the space and storage vital to truck customers, the 2019 Sierra AT4 delivers innovative solutions. The cargo boxes offer best-in-class cargo volume of 63 cubic feet (1,784 liters) on the short box and continues to be made of roll-formed, high-strength steel, yet a revised alloy offers 50 percent more strength than the current model.

Available GearOn accessory rails within the box allow for bike racks, kayak carriers and other accessories to be installed or adjusted quickly and easily. The rails’ integrated position makes cargo more accessible and frees up space in the rest of the box.

The rear seat backs open to reveal two 10-liter rectangular storage spaces large enough for tablets, tie-down cords or other personal accessories, as well as a large 24-liter storage tray under the second-row seat that can secure all your gear while you’re on the go.

GM Takes Next Step Toward Future with Self-Driving Vehicle Manufacturing in Michigan

After more than a year of building test vehicles for development of its self-driving technology, General Motors announced it will build production versions of its Cruise AV at its Orion Township assembly plant in Michigan. Roof modules for GM’s self-driving vehicles will be assembled at its Brownstown plant.

The Cruise AV, which the company plans to commercialize in 2019, is the first production-ready vehicle built from the ground up to operate safely on its own with no driver, steering wheel, pedals or manual controls.

“We’re continuing to make great progress on our plans to commercialize in 2019,” said GM President Dan Ammann. “Our Orion and Brownstown teams have proven experience in building high-quality self-driving test vehicles and battery packs, so they are well-prepared to produce the Cruise AV.”

GM will invest more than $100 million to upgrade both facilities. Roof module production has already begun and production of the fourth generation Cruise AV is expected to begin in 2019.

Since January 2017, UAW Local 5960 workers at the Orion plant have assembled three generations of Cruise self-driving test vehicles for use in the most challenging urban environments, including downtown San Francisco. More than 200 of the test vehicles have been assembled at Orion.

“The UAW is committed to preparing our members for the future of advanced mobility and this investment recognizes our willingness to work together to build these self-driving vehicles,” said Cindy Estrada, vice president and director, UAW General Motors Department. “Whether it involves traditional vehicles or advance technology, our members are highly capable of delivering great products.”

Workers at GM’s Brownstown Battery Assembly Plant will expand their capabilities by adding roof module production for all of Cruise’s self-driving vehicles. The roof modules integrate special equipment for AV operation such as LIDAR, cameras, sensors and other hardware, and will be assembled on a dedicated line at the facility. The Orion plant will continue to build the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Sonic as well as the Cruise AV.

The Power of Air: Equinox’s Design Enhances Aerodynamics

It’s no secret the compact SUV segment is one of the fastest growing in the world. Customers want passenger and cargo space that fits their lifestyle without compromising on fuel efficiency or safety.

However, the larger the dimensions of a vehicle, the bigger the challenges of making it aerodynamically efficient. On the move, a vehicle has to forge a path of least resistance, and the smoother it slices through the air the more fuel efficient and refined it is.

That was the task for the Design and Aerodynamic teams working on the shape of the all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox: to create an all-new compact SUV that is a perfect balance of style, function and efficiency.

And with the segment leading 15.1 Km/L on the highway (1.5L FWD models), the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox certainly achieves that goal. However, it wasn’t a task that was trivially accomplished.

Size matters

Vehicle aerodynamics are a carefully considered science; styling flourishes cannot be added at whim without evaluating their effect on airflow around the vehicle. For the 2018 Equinox, the design teams took great care in creating a refined new vehicle shape that maintains the key proportions of a small crossover/SUV, without adversely affecting aerodynamic efficiency. In addition to delivering the utility and functionality customers look for in the segment, the Equinox’s expressive exterior has a lean, sculpted form sporting Chevrolet’s signature design cues.

“Aerodynamic performance is a big contributor to fuel economy, but the box-like shapes of crossovers and SUVs are not conducive to aero efficiency,” said Nick Lico, Global Aerodynamics development lead. “Working with Design, we were able to craft an athletic shape that is both attractive and segment-leading in aero efficiency.”

Tunnel vision

Balancing every-day usability of the new Equinox with aero needs was not an easy task and it was something Chevrolet engineers focused on single-mindedly. Picking the right dimensions, for instance, was crucial. The Equinox had to be the right size, to make it easier to park and maneuver, but without compromising on efficiency or even interior space. As a result, the overall length was reduced by 119 millimeters but despite the smaller exterior dimensions than the older model, interior volume was increased.

The reduced length, however, posed another hurdle to aero efficiency, because it is tougher to push a shorter shape cleanly through the air.

The exterior styling of the all-new Equinox was honed after more than 500 hours in General Motor’s full-scale wind tunnel. The final design not only maintains the essence of the intended design, but reduces wind resistance by 10 percent over the previous model.

The Equinox’s cutting-edge approach to efficiency also sees the addition of a new active aerodynamics element. Much like features found on high-end super cars, the Equinox can literally alter its aerodynamic performance depending on the situation. It boasts available electronically controlled upper and lower grille shutters which account for improved aerodynamics. They close in certain conditions on the highway, when engine cooling needs are reduced, pushing more air around the vehicle to reduce drag.

It’s all in the detail

An aero-efficient body is the sum of several small, but significant, design details. These styling elements not only contribute to the aesthetics, they address drag around various areas of the vehicle, making the Equinox’s design a harmonious blend of form and function.

  • The larger rear spoiler was designed to help reduce turbulence at the rear of the vehicle for less wind resistance.
  • The rear corner incorporates a series of cleverly incorporated “air trips,” as the designers call them, for optimal air separation at the edges of the taillamps and corners at the D-pillars.
  • New tire deflectors help achieve the same aerodynamic advantage as a traditional air dam, but without compromising the Equinox’s sculpted design.
  • Underbody panels on FWD models improve airflow beneath the vehicle.

The Trans Am that started America’s first production turbocharged V-8

The Trans AM Turbo is part of the 2nd Generation Pontiac Firebird produced from 1970 till 1981. The 1980 Trans AM Turbo marks a milestone in the history of General Motors’ Pontiac Division as it is the first ever produced American V8 Turbocharged engine.

Back in the day, with the new regulations on emissions and fuel consumption in the mid-70s, it seems that the Pontiac engineers didn’t get that memo and decided to opt for a performance engine. They took the emissions-friendly, low-deck, low-performance 301 and crafted an entirely bespoke turbocharger system for it.

This resulted in an outstanding engine at the time and created a paradox between the new US regulations, fuel crisis and the early 80’s inflation however a Trans AM needs to be a Trans AM thus the 1980 Pontiac Trans AM Turbocharged was born.

The particularity of the 1980 Trans AM Turbo comes from the hood design with integrated Turbo indicator.

Afterwards in 1981 and beyond, the Trans AM had a new meaning, with a new chassis, new design and new engine trims.

Seif’s 1980 turbocharged Trans Am comes with all original interior and loaded with options for that period of time including A/C, power windows.

With as many as 14 available active safety features, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Automatic Braking, Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Vision Camera, Rear Park Assist, Surround Vision and Front Pedestrian Braking system, the Traverse is one of the most advanced vehicles in its class.

Also on offer is the innovative Rear Mirror Camera. This segment-exclusive rear-view mirror acts both as a conventional mirror and video display for a wide-angle, high-resolution camera. In camera mode, it provides a full view of the area behind the vehicle, without the obstruction of head restraints, rear-seat passengers or cargo.

Another available feature that enhances driver awareness and occupant safety is Rear Cross Traffic Alert. The system can detect an approaching vehicle during a reversing maneuver, and apply the brakes if the driver doesn’t respond to the warnings. Furthermore, the array of active safety technology is complemented by unwavering passive safety features such as 7 airbags, including Front Center Side-Impact Air Bag pioneered by the older generation Traverse.

The 2018 Traverse also offers a vast selection of connectivity features to minimize driver distraction. At the heart of the Traverse’s advanced connectivity is Chevrolet’s award-winning MyLink system, which is available with 7- and 8-inch-diagonal touch screens. The system mirrors the layout of a smartphone and supports Apple CarPlay. The inclusion of Siri Eyes-Free, meanwhile, allows the driver to control several vehicle functions using voice commands, without the need to take the eyes off the road or hands off the wheel.

Finally, a new Rear Seat Reminder feature is standard on all trims. It activates when the rear doors are opened or closed, up to 10 minutes before or, anytime the vehicle is on. The Traverse displays a reminder to double check the rear seats for valuables, once the vehicle is turned off under certain conditions.

While the abundance of technology can become intrusive in most vehicles with a multitude of beeps and warning lights, their application in the Traverse is seamless. The computers ensure progress is safe, smooth and convenient without becoming a distraction. Just the way you’d expect in a Chevrolet.
