Audi Study: No Congestion in the City of the Future

The research project “25th Hour – Flow” simulates the traffic flow in Ingolstadt.

The future of urban mobility: people will have more time, cities more space.

How much time will we save in a city with autonomous cars, ride sharing and smart traffic management? Answers are given by the Audi study “25th Hour – Flow”. Partnering with the traffic experts at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) and the Munich consultancy MobilityPartners, the research simulated the future of mobility in Ingolstadt/Germany. According to the study, a lasting reduction in travel times can be achieved on a typical commute: in fully automated traffic by one third, even though over ten percent more people are on the road. The prerequisite is that the trend towards sharing takes hold.

Fleets of self-driving cars will help to solve traffic problems in cities in the long term. These benefits become even more apparent when coupled with smarter traffic management and a higher occupancy rate, i.e. increasing the average number of persons per car. If this figure rises moderately from 1.1 to 1.3 persons, because more people share a car, there is no more congestion during rush hour. In a fully automated, networked traffic system, more people (+12%) can be transported much more quickly (-33%) in commuter traffic (see animation).

Connected, automated and shared vehicles also provide cities with new opportunities to use and reallocate space to improve urban quality of life. For example, the study found that the incorporation of fully autonomous vehicles could repurpose one traffic lane in a four-lane network and dedicate this new space to pedestrians or bicycles instead of vehicles. The study takes into account that, with an increasing number of autonomous cars, more senior citizens and children without a driver’s license have access to mobility, and convenient robo-taxis will compete with local public transportation.

“The results suggest that autonomous cars, mobility services, and networked infrastructure can significantly reduce congestion and road space. At the same time, more young and old people can travel safely and conveniently. In this way, the quality of life in cities will be improved dramatically. These findings encourage us to continue our investment in the future: in self-driving cars such as the Audi Aicon, services like Audi on demand, or networked technology such as Audi traffic-light information,” says Melanie Goldmann, head of Trend Communication at Audi.

The study also examines more extreme scenarios. For example, what happens if there is a sharp increase in the number of people who use public transportation, walk, or travel by bike? What is the effect of high levels of delivery traffic as a result of online shopping? And what happens if cities do not permit self-driving cars or are slow or reluctant to digitalize their infrastructure? The results range from shorter journey times in commuter traffic (-40%) to gridlock.

“The effects of connected and automated vehicles and of other technical and societal developments are continuously studied in the transportation research community. In most cases, the studies focus on single aspects of these developments in order to better identify the isolated effect of exactly that aspect alone. Our objective was different: We wanted to draw a picture of what mobility will look like when all these effects come together,” says Professor Peter Vortisch, head of the Institute for Transport at the KIT.

In the traffic model for Ingolstadt, the researchers investigated only one parameter in isolation, without taking account of changes in user behavior or increased demand: how many self-driving cars would be needed today to make the traffic flow noticeably better? At least 40 percent! Computers maintain the necessary distance to other vehicles, do not drive too fast, and obey all traffic signals. However, according to several academic studies, in a mixed traffic situation this has a disadvantage for traffic flow. Journey times are noticeably cut only with an increasing number of autonomous cars: if the roads in Ingolstadt today were used only by autonomous vehicles, travel times would fall by one quarter.

“The results show us how important it is to take an overall view of urban mobility. Self-driving cars require mobility services and smart infrastructure to make the most of their advantages. For this reason it is important to cooperate with various stakeholders, especially with cities,” says Goldmann.

With its approximately 140,000 residents, Ingolstadt, Audi’s headquarter city, is well suited as a “laboratory” for traffic flow on the roads, as traffic here has four wheels: for historical reasons there are many automobiles and buses here, but no subway or trams. These conditions apply in many medium-sized cities in different countries.

Audi’s “25th Hour” project

Today, on average, drivers spend about 50 minutes per day at the wheel. In the “25th Hour” project, since 2017 Audi has been investigating how self-driving cars will change our everyday lives. In the future will we continue to spend almost an hour a day in the car?

In addition, the traveling time in the self-driving car can be put to good use: passengers talk, relax or work. In collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO), Audi is investigating how, for example, the interior of the car can become a perfect workplace (study, 2017). For Audi’s strategists and designers, the answers to such questions are highly relevant. Digitalization and urbanization transform cities, mobility and user behavior. Automobile concepts, however, are being developed today – and have to blend smartly and efficiently with developing mobility systems in the future.

The Tuning in Essen Motor Show 2018

When your heart beats faster and your pulse vibrates it can only be ESSEN Motor Show 2018.

From December 1 to 9, 2018, the Essen Motor Show 2018 brought them all together: Sports car fans, tuners, motorsportsmen, motorsports women and vintage vehicle friends to celebrate the 51st lap of the performance festival at Messe Essen.

Over 500 exhibitors and a spectacular supporting programme are connecting people and styles. The emotional format for success is arousing the enthusiasm of generations and genders across the board. Amongst other highlights, a special show with sporty convertibles and live action in the Motorsports Arena are ensuring great emotions.

The exhibitors included Continental, Hankook, Mercedes FanWorld, Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, Renault Motorsport, Skoda, Toyo Tires and VW Motorsport. They displayed new sports cars, tyres and racing vehicles.

For tuners, the Essen Motor Show is a festival: Here, numerous manufacturers are presenting new vehicles and accessories for the coming season including ABT Sportsline, BBS, Brabus, Eisenmann Exhaust Systems, H&R Spezialfedern, KW automotive, OZ Deutschland, Remus Innovation and Sonax. Moreover, hip tuning forges such as JP Performance, Liberty Walk, Sidney Industries and Vossen Wheels also were present at the starting line in Essen.

Not to forget The special show called the tuningXperience is the tuning trend show par excellence: Around 160 private owners from Europe presented their often prizewinning vehicles. Here, many of the parts offered at the Essen Motor Show can be admired in the assembled condition. The spectrum of the exhibits ranges from the moderate daily driver to the detail-loving high-end showcar.

Vehicles in motorsports looks are trendy, frequently with widebodies, large wings and carbon parts. The appearances are often completed by sporty brake systems and wheel rims as well as by film applications in motorsports designs. Also hip: tuned youngtimers, particularly from German makes such as Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Opel, Porsche and VW.
The heart chamber of the Essen Motor Show is the Motorsports Arena: Here, the engines are roaring, the tyres are screeching and the adrenaline level is rising up to record-breaking values. The racing atmosphere is enticing thousands of visitors into the arena every day. The programme featured drift shows, taxi rides for visitors and presentations by the exhibitors. In the neighboring pit lane in Hall 5, everything is also revolving around motorsports: Racing series and circuits such as the Hockenheimring and the Nürburgring had their booths here.

In Hall 3, a selection of design cars and crazy cars were awaiting those people who like it even more individual. These eccentric one-offs are showing that a lot is possible beyond each series: either as a daring design for the future of mobility or simply as a funmobile.

Both have their places at the Essen Motor Show which also offers a permanent setting to e-mobility. The car sharing provider RUHRAUTOe is presenting a selection of electrically driven vehicles. These include the fair premieres of the following models: BMW i8 Roadster (2018), Nissan eNV200 (2018), Renault Master Z.E. 33 (2019), Renault ZOE Z.E. 40 (2018) and Tesla Model 3 (US) (2018).

Essen Motor Show 2018 is a true show to be considered for tuning lovers.

The BMW i3 (120 Ah) and the BMW i3s (120 Ah) With new high-voltage batteries for an even further extended range and retaining characteristic BMW sporty flair.

The BMW i3 - Arab Motor World

Consistent further development of BMW eDrive technology once again ensures enhanced driving pleasure in the purely electrically powered models of the BMW i brand. With cell capacity increased to 120 ampere hours (Ah) and a gross energy content of 42.2 kilowatt hours (kWh), a new generation of high-voltage batteries enables the BMW i3 (120 Ah) (combined power consumption: 13.1 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)* and the BMW i3s (120 Ah) (combined power consumption: 14.6 – 14.0 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)* to achieve a significantly further enhanced range as of November 2018. In everyday use, the two models are now able to cover a distance of 260 kilometres*** – an increase of almost 30 per cent.

In this way, BMW i is consolidating its position as an innovation leader and trendsetter in the field of pioneering electromobility with hallmark brand driving pleasure and excellent everyday practicality. Since the market launch of the BMW i3, the storage capacity of its high-voltage battery has been doubled, thereby increasing the car’s range as well. At the same time as the introduction of the new battery, a new body finish, a new colour for the optional interior design Loft and adaptive LED headlights with matrix function for the high beam are also available for the BMW i3 and BMW i3s. In future, a sports package will be available for the BMW i3 that includes black wheel arch surrounds and a sports suspension with specific dampers, springs and stabilisers, lowered suspension, a widened track and 20-inch light alloy wheels. The optimised guidance system in the tile design of the iDrive operating system is now available in conjunction with the optional navigation system Business. In future, the options telephony with wireless charging and wireless LAN hotspot will also be available for the BMW i3 and BMW i3s.

Ongoing progress in battery development: increased energy content while dimensions remain the same.

Like the electric motors and power electronics, the high-voltage batteries are an integral part of the BMW eDrive technology used in BMW i automobiles and developed independently by the BMW Group. Its lithium-ion cells are produced exclusively based on specifications defined by the BMW Group. Based on sound research and development work conducted in close cooperation with the manufacturer of the battery cells, consistent optimisation of the storage units is achieved in terms of power output, range, safety and durability. Installed deep in the floor of the vehicle, the high-voltage battery is produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing and consists of eight modules, each with twelve storage cells: the latest advancements have resulted in a capacity of 120 Ah along with a gross energy content of 42.2 kWh – while the size remains unchanged. This is yet another major step towards increased range. For comparison: at the market launch of the BMW i3 in 2013, the equivalent figures were 60 Ah and 22.6 kWh, while the second-generation battery introduced in 2016 reaches a level of 94 Ah and 33 kWh.

In addition to vehicle weight and the installation space taken up by the high-voltage battery, driving performance and energy consumption likewise remain virtually unaltered by the increased range achieved by the latest advancements. The BMW i3, powered by a 125 kW/170 hp electric motor, accelerates in 7.3 seconds from zero to 100 km/h, while the BMW i3s with 135 kW/184 hp completes the standard sprint in 6.9 seconds. This means that the two models both set the benchmark for sporty performance within their vehicle segment. Thanks to spontaneous power delivery as is typical of electric motors, the BMW i3 and BMW i3s even reach the level of sports cars that have a considerably more powerful combustion engine: here the figures are 5.1 and 4.3 seconds respectively for the sprint from 80 to 120 km/h.

The combined power consumption of the BMW i3 (120 Ah) is 13.1 kWh per 100 kilometres*, while the BMW i3s (120 Ah) has a power consumption of 14.6 kWh to 14.0 kWh per 100 kilometres*. The high efficiency of the electric motor and the enhanced battery capacity result in a range that is nearly 30 per cent higher than that of the predecessor models. The range of the BMW i3 (120 Ah) is 359 kilometres* (previously 290 to 300 km) according to NEDC, and 285 to 310 kilometres** (previously 235 – 255 km) according to WLTP. For the BMW i3s (120 Ah), a range of 330 to 345 kilometres* (previously 280 km) has been calculated according to NEDC, and a range of 270 to 285 kilometres** (previously 235 –245 km) according to WLTP. In everyday conditions, both models now achieve a range of 260 kilometres*** (previously 200 km).

The high-quality charging electronics of the BMW i3 and BMW i3s allows fast and flexible refreshment of the energy reserves. The standard charging cable is designed to be plugged into a conventional household socket. Here the battery can be charged to up to 80 per cent of its full power in approximately 15 hours with a charging capacity of 2.4 kW. Connection to the BMW i Wallbox enables rapid three-phase charging with a capacity of 11 kW. Here the time required to achieve an 80 per cent charge of the large-capacity high-voltage battery is 3.2 hours. The power electronics and high-voltage battery in the BMW i3 and BMW i3s can also be used in conjunction with quick-charging stations that run on DC power. Here the charging capacity is 50 kW and the high-voltage battery reaches 80 per cent of its total power in just 42 minutes.

With its battery capacity increased to 42.2 kWh, the latest version of the BMW i3 also follows the brand’s holistic concept, applicable since market launch and geared towards responsible use of resources: this includes not just locally emissions-free power but also material selection and production techniques as well as mobility services. The BMW i3 (120 Ah) and the BMW i3s (120 Ah) have a much more favourable CO2 footprint across the entire vehicle lifecycle – from raw material extraction and manufacture through to use and recycling – and this makes for significantly lower global warming potential than is the case with comparable, conventionally powered automobiles.

Sports package as a new option for the BMW i3.

In future, the new sports package will enable additional emphasis of brand-based driving pleasure derived from locally emissions-free mobility in the BMW i3. The key element of the new option is the sports suspension, which is a standard feature in the BMW i3s and includes specific dampers, springs and stabilisers, a suspension lowered by 10 millimetres, a widened track and 20-inch light alloy wheels in Jet Black or Bicolor finish with mixed tyres. This increase in driving dynamics is visually underscored by means of black wheel arch surrounds, which also form part of the BMW i sports package.

New body finishes, adaptive LED headlights, optimised controls and connectivity.

Since 2014 the BMW i3 has been the world’s best-selling electrically powered vehicle in the premium compact segment. On the streets of urban conurbations it has come to stand as a symbol of pioneering mobility. Its characteristic shaping is closely linked to the LifeDrive vehicle architecture, which combines an aluminium chassis with a passenger cell made carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). With the introduction of the new battery generation, the design of the BMW i3 and the BMW i3s has been enriched with fresh accentuations. The choice of body finish for the two models has been extended to include the new variant Jucaro Beige metallic with accentuations in Frozen Grey. Meanwhile the exterior paint finishes Mineral Grey metallic, Imperial Blue metallic, Melbourne Red metallic, Capparis White and Fluid Black are still available. To match the new body finish, the optional interior design Loft now includes upholstery in the fabric/Sensatec combination “Electronic” – in Carum Grey with accentuations in brown and interior surfaces in Electronic Brown.

As an alternative to the standard LED headlights, adaptive LED headlights are now available with an automatic, selective dip function for the high beam. The innovative matrix technology for the high beam increases visibility range while at the same avoiding any dazzle effect on other road users. For this purpose it is divided into four horizontally arranged segments which can be activated and deactivated independently of each other at speeds of over 70 km/h. The high beam segments are controlled based on the traffic situation. As soon as the front camera registers an oncoming vehicle or a vehicle travelling ahead in the same direction, the space in which this vehicle is located is illuminated using the low beam only. This is effected by deactivation of the matrix high beam segments that are responsible for this area. The remaining areas of the road continue to be illuminated by the high beam. Adaptive LED headlight functions also include the cornering light and the high beam assistant.

The optimised menu display for the iDrive operating system with buttons in tile structure and in live mode is now also available in conjunction with the optional navigation system Business. This means that the desired content is now available even more quickly and conveniently. What is more, the program of optional equipment items now also includes the option of telephony with wireless charging, which allows compatible mobile phones to be recharged without use of a cable. The wireless LAN hotspot, likewise newly available for the BMW i3 and the BMW i3s, provides a fast online connection for up to ten end devices inside the vehicle.

The new BMW X2 M35i: M DNA for the most powerful compact Sports Activity Coupe

Sportiness coupled with a polarizing appearance – based on this formula, the new BMW X2 has inspired above all a young and modern target group following its premiere in March 2018. With its extroverted design, the BMW X2 interprets the character of a premium SAC (Sports Activity Coupes) in an entirely new way within the compact segment.

The top-of-the-range version of the BMW X2 is the M Performance automobile.

BMW is now presenting the new top model of the X2 series. The wide BMW double kidney grille of new BMW X2 M35i (combined fuel consumption 8.4-8.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 191-185 g/km)*, features a surround in Cerium Grey for visual differentiation at first glance. Likewise, the surrounds of the air cooling inlets and the exterior mirror caps are finished in Cerium Grey. The rear of the X2 M35i is characterised by the standard M rear spoiler and two specially designed exhaust tailpipes, which also come in Cerium Grey.

BMW’s most powerful 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine.

The new BMW X2 M35i featuring a 225 kW (306 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine definitely sets new benchmarks above the previous versions. As the letter M in the type designation clearly signalises, the new X2 M35i possesses the impressive dynamic handling qualities of an M Performance automobile. Behind this is yet again the BMW M GmbH, whose racing know-how flows into the development of all components. The 2-litre TwinPower Turbo engine concealed under an M Performance cover is the very first M Performance four-cylinder engine and at the same time BMW’s most powerful version. It delivers a fascinating maximum power output of 225 kW (306 hp). Maximum torque is an extremely powerful 450 Newton metres. To ensure that this sheer power is securely transferred to the tarmac, the X2 M35i comes as standard with intelligent four-wheel drive technology xDrive in conjunction with the 8-speed Steptronic transmission including Launch Control. The automatic transmission features specific M Performance tuning. Equipped in this way, the BMW X2 M35i is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds*. The necessary thermal stability of the engine is now ensured by a redesigned cooling system.

Outstanding driving dynamics thanks to M-specific tuning.

Being a typical M Performance automobile, the BMW X2 M35i features, in addition to a powerful engine, also a M Sport suspension system that has been specifically tuned and adapted to match the car’s sporty character. A adaptive suspension offering two different manually adjustable modes and combining maximised sportiness and driving comfort is also optionally available.  A particularly special technical highlight – and also a premiere for an M Performance automobile – is the M Sport Differential installed in the front axle gear. During highly dynamic driving manoeuvres, this locking differential most effectively reduces possible traction losses on the front wheels. In addition, the braking system has been upgraded for use on the X2 M35i. The M Sport braking system with fixed callipers in Dark Blue metallic and 18-inch steel discs at the front (17-inch at the rear) guarantees consistently short braking distances even under the highest loads. With that, however, the M know-how is still far from being exhausted. Steering and suspension have also both been adapted to match the performance of the drive system. For instance, thanks to a special setup, the M sports steering conveys to the driver an impressively direct and precise steering feel. Furthermore, the X2 M35i comes as standard with the M Sport suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setting as well as vehicle lowering. The rear axle construction has been redesigned. A suspension with an adaptive spring and damper combination offering two different manually adjustable modes is also optionally available.

Upgraded exterior design thanks to M Performance typical elements in Cerium Crey.

The sporty aspiration of the X2 M35i, which is the result of its inner qualities, is reflected in an exciting exterior design with numerous typical M Performance Automobile elements finished in Cerium Grey and based on the X2 M Sport Package. This begins at the front with full HD technology for the main headlights and fog lights and continues with the double kidney grille in Cerium Grey and the newly designed side air intakes of the same colour at the front for best possible cooling of brakes and engine. The exterior mirrors have been upgraded by special caps, likewise in Cerium Grey. At the rear, the X2 M35i boasts a distinctive M rear spoiler and demonstrates its fascinating sovereignty with an M Sport exhaust system with two tailpipes (each 100 mm in diameter). Thanks to the adapted silencer system, the exhaust system produces a particularly sporty sound spectrum. 19-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in 715M styling (optional: 20-inch M Sport light alloy wheels in 721M styling and in Cerium Grey bicolour) impressively round off the exterior design features.

For the first time Exclusive M sports seats ensure perfect seating comfort and lateral support.

An exceptionally sporty look also dominates the interior. As with the exterior design, the basis is again the M Sport Package. Moreover, the X2 M35i features as standard an M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and door entry trims at the front bearing the lettering “M35i”. The optional M sports seats at the front are a novelty. They offer not only perfect lateral support for both driver and front passenger in sharp bends, but also the highest level of comfort and safety through integrated headrests. The M sports seats are available in the following three different designs:  FabricTrigon/Alcantara combination in black with blue accents, Leather Dakota Magmared, perforated with black accents and Leather Dakota black perforated. Matching seatbelts in an M design are also on offer.

Trend-setting digital competence for state-of-the-art technologies.

In addition to the uncompromisingly sporty orientation of both drive system and design, the BMW X2 M35i also demonstrates BMW’s trend-setting digital competence in the areas of operation and networking. For instance, the full-colour BMW Head-Up Display is among the optionally available features. It offers a display range that is unprecedented in this vehicle segment. If desired, the latest generation of BMW ConnectedDrive and the new BMW Connected App can be fitted. Optional functions such as the wireless use of Apple CarPlay set further highlights. Driver assistant systems include, for example, camera-based technologies such as the traffic jam assistant for less tiring driving in dense stop-and-go traffic or the optional parking assistant.

At the same time as the Tuning World show at Lake Constance, Germany, and the legendary Wörthersee Meeting at Lake Wörth, Austria, ABT Sportsline participated in another exciting event. For this, racing driver Daniel Abt, son of CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt, led a powerful trio to the airfield at the small municipality of Tannheim in the German state of Baden-Württemberg: the ABT Audi SQ5 (425 HP/313 kW), the ABT Audi RS3 (500 HP/368 kW) and the
ABT Audi RS5-R (530 HP/390 kW) as the strongest of the lot. The “nemesis”, on the other hand, only came up with 305 HP (224 kW). But the “dare” that followed was not about winning a drag race: Daniel Abt rather had to leave his usual terrain behind and climb into Matthias Dolderer’s aerobatics plane. The 47-year old was the first German to win the Red Bull Air Race World Championship in 2016 and will be competing again in 2018.

The second candidate for a “taxi ride” in the agile Extra 300L double-seater was the Brazilian actor Caio Castro. He certainly had something to show his 16 million Instagram followers afterwards. Social media whiz Daniel Abt also went home with plenty of impressions. While he is used to high forces from Formula E, the maximum 8 g in the cockpit are something else altogether. As a comparison: Even Formula 1 race drivers don’t experience that much. So while his passengers broke out in a cold sweat, for Dolderer the trip through the skies was barely more than a little Sunday jaunt. A maximum of 10 g is permitted during competition flights – and values exceeding this can occur sporadically for brief periods. Dolderer, who once was Germany’s youngest flight instructor, has been used to these forces for decades.

But if you think that this makes cars boring for the aerobatics pilot, you need to think again. In fact, Dolderer was so fascinated that he entered a one-make series as a guest driver in 2010 and 2011. Accordingly, he was highly interested in the vehicles that ABT Sportsline had brought along for shooting spectacular videos and pictures together. Almost a pity, then, that there are no two-seaters in Formula E. Because Daniel Abt would love to return the favor – and after all, it’s not just about g-forces. Overall, the day was a fascinating experience for the racing driver, and while the unusual forces did not knock him out, he was certainly bowled over.

New entry-level engines for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo.

With the launch of a new, exceptionally efficient entry-level engine, BMW is extending the drive portfolio in the luxury segment. As from July 2018, a four-cylinder diesel engine will be available for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo.

The exceedingly efficient four-cylinder diesel is making a debut in the BMW 6 Series. Turbo charging with variable turbine geometry and Common Rail direct injection constitute the prerequisites for sporty power delivery and a high degree of efficiency on this 2-litre engine. Maximum torque of 400 Nm is available between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm, with maximum power output of 140 kW/190 hp being achieved at 4 000 rpm.

Therefore, the choice of power units available for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo now totals 5 engines. In addition to straight six-cylinder diesel engines, a straight six-cylinder petrol engine and a four-cylinder petrol engine will be offered. The new entry-level diesel transfers power with a standard 8-speed Steptronic transmission.

All suspension systems available for the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo are also optionally available for the new model variants, including Adaptive Two-Axle Air Suspension, Integral Active Steering and the Executive Drive system with Active Roll Stabilisation. The new BMW 620d Gran Turismo sprints from 0 to 100 km/100 in 7.9 seconds. The outstanding efficiency of the new engine variant is demonstrated by a combined fuel consumption of 4.9 to 4.8 litres per 100 km and a CO2 emission level of 129 to 127 grams/km.

The fuel consumption and CO2 emissions figures shown were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable at the time of type approval. The figures refer to a vehicle with basic configuration in Germany and the range shown considers the different size of the selected wheels and tires. The CO2 efficiency specifications are determined according to Directive 1999/94/EC and the Pkw-EnVKV, and based (for classification) on the fuel consumption and CO2 values as per the NEDC cycle.

A unique Beetle – ABT Individual presents one-of-a-kind vehicle

With 350,000 species, beetles are the worldwide largest order of insects. ABT Sportsline from Germany also ensures almost unlimited variety when it comes to the automotive counterpart – the Volkswagen Beetle. And not only there: on request, the dedicated ABT Individual department can turn any car from the Volkswagen and Audi Group into a “solitaire”. “We can offer anyone who is looking for a unique car away from the mainstream a one-of-a-kind solution that cannot be provided with tuning from a catalog,” explains CEO Hans-Jürgen Abt. It is not just about differentiation, but also about implementing personal color and material preferences which were not intended by the original car designers. After all, it is unavoidable to limit the range for standard products at a certain point. “A car from ABT Individual is obvious at first glance – or not,” Abt continues: “Some customers want cars where everyone immediately reaches for their smartphone camera when they see it. Others again enjoy details that nobody else will notice. Our customers have very different characters, which makes this type of project so interesting.”

One of the latest projects – a VW Beetle convertible – was designed and rebuilt for the managing director of a medium-size company. The car has a full film wrap in a subdued shade of bronze and is elegantly understated. The different nature becomes obvious primarily in the “undertones”, such as brand logos painted black. Another distinctive detail are the 19” wheels of type ABT ER-C which ABT Individual specially painted in a silver-bullet shade. As a standard, the attractive wheel for the Beetle is supplied only in gun-metal or matt black. Thanks to the open design, the 6-piston brake calipers and the 370 x 35 mm brake discs of the
ABT sport brake system are well visible on the front axle. The ABT Power boost provides an impressive 290 HP (213 kW) where the production model only has 220 HP (162 kW). At the same time, the maximum torque increased to 430 Nm – 80 Nm more than the series engine can provide.

But the true highlights of the conversion only become evident when sitting in the car or when the top is down: the extensive saddler’s craft work in the interior. Where the original is dominated by dark plastic, this model is a dream in leather and carbon. ABT used elegant leather to cover the dashboard, its substructure, the console for the auxiliary instruments and the door center parts including the arm rests from front to rear. Finest leather also adorns the door handles, the inside of the roof pillars, the sun blinds and entrance areas as well as the column, wheel and airbag of the steering wheel assembly. To satisfy the sporty character of this unique beetle, the ABT Individual team also covered all black plastic panels on the interior with real carbon. Overall, all conversions are of the highest grade. Only the suspension is “low” – thanks to carefully set up ABT suspension springs. The leading tuner for Volkswagen and Audi shows that, despite the size of the company, detail work can be very individual.

Lake Wörth meets Lake Constance – ABT shows R8-Art-Car, RS4-R and RS5-R

Tuning fans will have a tough decision to make in 2018: Not for the first time, the Tuning World Bodensee show at Lake Constance in Germany (10 – 13 May) and the legendary Wörthersee-Treffen at Lake Wörth in Austria (9 – 12 May) will overlap considerably. But you can only be in one place at a time! As a company, that is a little easier and ABT Sportsline will be presenting interesting highlights at both events.

At Lake Wörth, a very special masterpiece awaits visitors at the H&R stand, which also presents ABT Sportsline 2018. Cartoonist Timo Wuerz, who regularly creates drawings for international companies, designed the first ABT Art-Car together with German film wrap specialist SIGNal Design GmbH from Schwäbisch Hall – and what a car it is. The motto of the hot R8 is: Nun meets Abt (“Abt” is the German word for “abbot”). It goes without saying that the sports car has a lot more to offer that could lead car enthusiasts into temptation.

The strictly limited performance cars ABT RS4-R and RS5-R are virtually technical twins, yet still completely different in the sum of all parts. While the Avant with 530 HP (390 kW) thanks to ABT Power will head to Austria, the equally well-endowed coupe will shoot straight to Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance. It will be presented as part of the “Audi Sport Tuning” special exhibition in hall B2 at stand 415. Compared to its slightly more practical station wagon cousin, it is two tenth of second faster when accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62 mph): it accomplishes this standard sprint in just 3.6 seconds. When it comes to sound, however, the two agree: The ABT sport exhaust system, which is part of the performance concept, impresses with a fantastically charismatic V6 sound. Visually, both high-speed vehicles are equipped with similar styling elements from the Bavarian tuner: The aerodynamics packages each include ABT front lip, front flics, front grille with RS4-R or RS5-R logo and a rear skirt add on. Front blades and wheel arch vents can be added as optional extras. The rear spoiler and the sideblades are exclusively available for the RS5-R.

The athletically styled ABT SPORT GR alloy rims, which enhance both vehicles, have a strongly concave rim base as their primary design feature. They are fitted on the ABT RS4-R for Lake Wörth in 20” and on the RS5-R for Friedrichshafen even in 21”. Additionally, the Bavarian tuner upgraded the standard suspension with ABT sports stabilizers and ABT height adjustable suspension springs. This means the two cars are not only ready for a comfortable “lake cruise”, but can easily handle even tight hairpin bends in the mountains.

New Porsche Experience Centre at the Hockenheimring

Another Porsche Experience Centre has been given the green light: The world’s seventh customer experience centre from the sports car manufacturer is due to be built at the Hockenheimring. Over the next two years, a 176,000-square-metre area at the heart of the historic circuit will see the construction of a state-of-the-art building complex, a handling course, several driving dynamics areas and an off-road course. The work is due to start towards the middle of 2018, with the experience centre expected to be operational by the end of 2019. Porsche is implementing this project in collaboration with emodrom-group, the company responsible for the strategic development of the Hockenheimring.

“The Porsche Experience Centres allow our customers and fans to experience the performance of our vehicles as well as the fascination of the brand at first hand”, explains Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board responsible for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “We are extending this unique offering by constructing this new site near our main plant in Zuffenhausen.” In terms of its architecture, the customer experience centre will follow the example of existing Porsche Experience Centres. Spread over three floors, an area of 4,500 square metres will house event spaces, conference and meeting rooms, a Porsche Selection Shop, a Porsche Classic Lounge plus a restaurant and café. Workshops and exhibition areas for vehicles will be constructed, too. A rapid charging infrastructure will also take the growing importance of hybrid vehicles, plus the requirements of the Porsche Mission E, into account.

Just like the existing sites located in Leipzig, Le Mans, Silverstone, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Shanghai, the Porsche Experience Centre in Hockenheim will offer a comprehensive driving experience. The 5,200-square-metre off-road course will also provide the ideal conditions for customers to experience the off-road capabilities of the sporty SUV Cayenne and the Macan models. “The Porsche Experience Centre in Hockenheim will become an important site for our home market of Germany”, says Jens Puttfarcken, Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche Deutschland GmbH. “Even in the age of digitalisation, live experiences with the Porsche brand are just as important as ever.”

Thomas Reister, CEO of emodrom-group, followed up, saying: “I am delighted that we have been able to attract Porsche, our preferred candidate, as a long-term tenant for the redesigned Hockenheimring. New 911 GT3 RS sets a lap time of 6:56.4 minutes through the ‘Green Hell’

On April 16 the Porsche 911 GT3 RS set another benchmark for road-approved sports cars at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit in Germany: Porsche works race driver Kévin Estre set a lap time in 6:56.4 minutes with the 520 hp GT3 RS. The Frenchman’s lap time was 24 seconds faster than the best time achieved with the previous GT3 RS model. Porsche development driver Lars Kern was sharing driving duties with Estre. Following the 918 Spyder and the 911 GT2 RS, the new GT3 RS is the third production Porsche sports car with a notarised lap time of less than seven minutes on the world’s most demanding race track, known as the ‘Green Hell’. As is customary for record drives, the time was measured around the 20.6-kilometre lap.

Frank Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars, commented; “No other Porsche model gets as close to racing as the new GT3 RS. Many innovative ideas from top-level motorsport were transferred; for example, from the 911 GT3 R. This is what our philosophy for GT models is about: Highest technology must be fascinating but tangible. In this regard there is no harder test for our ideas than the Nordschleife.”

Andreas Preuninger, Director GT Model Line, added; “All four lap times of both drivers were below seven minutes and only tenths of a second apart. This proves not only the outstanding power of the GT3 RS, but also its extraordinary driveability at the limit. A perfectly composed overall system allows for highly dynamic performance even with a relatively modest engine power. For a driver, each of the car’s thousands of parts have to feel like one – that’s an unbeatable strength of the GT3 RS. And what especially delights me is how much fun Lars and Kévin had when driving that car.”

29-year old Estre began the record lap at 11:40 am in ideal conditions, with 14 degree Celsius ambient and 18 degree Celsius track temperature. “This lap was a sensational experience for me”, he revealed afterwards. “Through the fast corners and on the brakes in particular, the GT3 RS is unbelievably close to our racing car GT3 R. This is also thanks to the new generation of tyres for road going sports cars. I like the engine of the GT3 RS a lot. Up to 9,000 revs per minute from a six-cylinder engine just feels fantastic. The sound is a dream and the torque is massive.”

Since 2016 Kévin Estre belongs to the squad of Porsche works drivers. He competes with the Porsche 911 RSR in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) that includes the Le Mans 24-Hours. In the ADAC GT Masters he races the 911 GT3 R.

At the Nürburgring the 911 GT3 RS was equipped with the latest generation of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres. Optimised especially for track day use, the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R is fully compliant with relevant EU and US law. The tyre (265/35 ZR 20 front and 325/30 ZR 21 rear) can soon be ordered at every Porsche Centre and selected dealers or tyre fitters. Its approved fitments include 911 GT3 RS and 911 GT2 RS.

The 911 GT3 RS with motorsport-bred chassis and 383-kW (520-hp), four-litre, high- speed naturally aspirated engine had its world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show in early March this year. The high-performance sports car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 312 km/h.

The McLaren 570S Spider refined by NOVITEC

A sportily styled designer outfit made from naked carbon, extremely light forged wheels with 20 and 21-inch diameter and a performance upgrade to 475 kW / 646 hp of power and 692 Nm of torque.

As a result, NOVITEC refines the McLaren 570S Spider not just visually, but also gives the two-seater even better performance on the road: The sprint time to 100 km/h is shortened to just 3.0 seconds. The top speed increases to 335 km/h.

Giving a sports car such as the McLaren 570S Spider an even more thrilling design is the specialty of the NOVITEC designers. They adapted the naked-carbon aerodynamic-enhancement components initially developed for the 570S Coupe models to the open-top two-seater.

The NOVITEC front spoiler lends the 570S Spider an even more distinctive and athletic front: The refined looks are accompanied by maximum aerodynamic efficiency: The shape of the carbon component was optimized in the wind tunnel to reduce front-axle lift at high speeds. The NOVITEC rear spoiler was designed to elevate the handling stability even further. Its contours were adapted precisely to the sweeping rear end of the vehicle.

NOVITEC carbon rocker panels, which lend the British sports car a longer and lower visual stance, upgrade the sides of the 570S Spider. In addition, the transition between the front and rear wheel arches now looks even more homogeneous. The aerodynamic finishing touches à la NOVITEC also include carbon covers that were tailored-made for the air intakes on both sides of the vehicle. They route the air even more precisely into the air intakes behind the two doors, which supply the engine with combustion and cooling air.

The sporty NOVITEC appearance package is rounded out by carbon covers for the sides of the rear bumper.

The hi-tech forged wheels specifically developed for the 570 models are just as elementary for the thrilling NOVITEC looks of the open-top McLaren. They are mounted in a staggered combination featuring 20-inch wheels on the front axle and 21-inch wheels at the rear. Thanks to their different diameters, they emphasize the wedge shape of the mid-engine sports car visually.

As a result of their design featuring five delicate double spokes and being produced using state-of-the-art forging technology, these wheels are extremely light for their king-sized format. The 9Jx20 front wheels with size 235/30 ZR 20 high-performance tires make full use of the available space under the wheel arches, as do the 11Jx21 rims on the rear axle, which are fitted with size 305/30 ZR 21 tires.

In addition to further enhancing the looks of the Spider thanks to the ride-height lowering by about 30 millimeters, the NOVITEC sport springs also make the handling more direct.

Upgraded in this way, the open-top McLaren is also perfectly prepared for more power. The NOVITEC engine specialists therefore developed three different performance kits for the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that powers all versions of the 570 model series. The special feature of this engine tuning is that the driver is able to activate or deactivate it at any time on the ‘Active Dynamic Panel.’ When needed, the two plug-and-play NOVITEC N-TRONIC modules adapted to the electronic engine control unit of the vehicle provide injection, ignition and boost pressure control with new mapping in a matter of seconds.

The maximum performance level, which is installed in combination with a NOVITEC RACE high-performance exhaust system, produces an additional 56 kW / 76 hp of peak power. At the same time, the engine develops 92 Nm more torque. With an output of 475 kW / 646 hp at 7,450 rpm and a peak torque of 692 Nm at 6,250 rpm, the open-top two-seater delivers further improved driving dynamics: From rest, the tuned 570S Spider storms to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds. The top speed increases to 335 km/h. However, the NOVITEC performance upgrade offers more than just improved road performance: It also makes the throttle response even more instantaneous. In addition, the power and torque curve is even more potent across the entire rev range.

With or without engine tuning: A NOVITEC high-performance exhaust system always delivers better sound and performance. In addition, these exhaust systems feature full thermal insulation, which significantly improves the heat transfer in the engine bay. Precision-tailored NOVITEC exhaust systems in different variants made from stainless steel or the even lighter INCONEL material used in Formula One racing are available for all McLaren 570 models. The looks of the two slanted tailpipes on the left and right were adapted perfectly to the contours of the rear end. In addition, the NOVITEC product range comprises lighter and more efficient sports catalysts.

NOVITEC also offers refinement at the highest levels of customization and quality for the interior of all McLaren automobiles. The company transforms the finest leathers and Alcantara in a virtually endless range of colors into the sports car owner’s personal dream cockpit.
