SOUND OF JAGUAR I-PACE PROTECTS ROAD USERS

SOUND OF JAGUAR I-PACE PROTECTS ROAD USERS -Cover - Arab Motor World (1)

With no engine sound, the electric Jaguar I-PACE required a new way to warn blind, visually impaired and other vulnerable road users it is approaching at low speed.

Jaguar has designed a unique Audible Vehicle Alert System (AVAS) for its first EV that meets and exceeds all forthcoming global legislation. Jaguar’s engineers have developed a sound that can be heard at speeds up to 20km/h and exceeds the 56dB(A) minimum required by forthcoming European legislation – the strictest in the world – for all new EVs from July 2019.

The Jaguar I-PACE’s sound was tested by members of Guide Dogs for the Blind, the UK’s leading charity for people affected by sight loss, as part of the testing undertaken by Jaguar. It also marks the start of an on-going relationship between the two organisations.

Iain Suffield, Jaguar NVH Technical Specialist, said: “The absence of traditional engine noise from electric vehicles creates a problem for vulnerable pedestrians, such as the blind or visually impaired. This is especially true at low speeds in town centres and car parks. We developed the Audible Vehicle Alert System for the Jaguar I-PACE to ensure the safety of all road users. Our potentially life-saving technology cannot be switched off and as the leading charity for people with sight loss, we are pleased to have the support of Guide Dogs to ensure real people are at the heart of our product testing.”

Jaguar’s engineers worked for four years to develop a soundtrack that is audible yet discreet and cannot be heard from inside the vehicle. Initial attempts to create a noise inspired by the sound of sci-fi spacecraft had to be shelved after pedestrians reacted by looking up to the sky, rather than at the road, as the vehicle approached.

Engineers tested sounds in a number of environments, including an anechoic chamber (specialist echo-free room) and various urban scenarios, before settling on the final sound for the Jaguar I-PACE . It is emitted from a speaker located behind the front grille, can be heard in every direction and cannot be disengaged.

The alert increases in pitch and volume in line with the speed of the vehicle and, when in reverse, is accompanied by an additional tone that indicates the change in direction. AVAS is not required at higher speeds as there is sufficient wind and tyre noise for pedestrians to hear the zero-emissions vehicle approaching.

John Welsman, Policy Business Partner (Travel & Mobility), Guide Dogs for the Blind, said:  “Guide Dogs campaigned hard to make it compulsory for quiet vehicles to have sound generating systems built in and turned on, including when the vehicle is stationary at a pedestrian crossing. We applaud Jaguar for being the first to launch an EV which meets standards before the new legislation even comes in and look forward to working with the company more in the future.”

Jaguar unveiled the I-PACE, its first all-electric vehicle, earlier this year to deliver sustainable sports car performance, next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) technology and five-seat SUV practicality.

Fitted with a state-of-the-art 90kWh lithium-ion battery, two Jaguar-designed motors and a bespoke aluminium structure, the I-PACE is capable of 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds (0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds) and a range of up to 470km (WLTP).

JAGUAR TO LAUNCH FIRST ELECTRIC TAXI FLEET IN MUNICH

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth handed over 10 all-electric Jaguar I-PACEs to the Munich Taxi Centre. In the presence of Munich’s mayor Josef Schmid (CSU) and Dr. Gerd Ennser (chairman of ADAC Südbayern), the I-PACE fleet lined-up in front of the Munich Opera House. This historic announcement marks the beginning of a new chapter for the German taxi industry.

The electric Jaguars provide taxi customers in Munich with a new and sustainable mode of transport: silent, comfortable and with zero emissions.

“Its generous spaciousness, sturdiness and efficient powertrain make the I-PACE an ideal vehicle for the taxi business“, said Prof. Dr. Ralf Speth at the handover ceremony. “It is a new type of vehicle for a new type of mobility and at Jaguar Land Rover we are delighted to join with the city of Munich and ADAC in the ‘E-Taxi Project’ to launch the first all-electric taxi fleet in Germany.”

From August, the new Jaguar taxis will be available for customers to hail on the streets of Munich. Wearing their full traditional taxi livery, the Jaguar I-PACEs* will be driven by specially trained drivers, who are hugely excited at the prospect of switching to electric.

Gregor Beiner said: “Our drivers received special training for the electric drive and specific Jaguar features. We are especially looking forward to the comfort of the “one-pedal operation“ and the silent driving, as well as the instant acceleration of an EV car.”

The Jaguar I-PACE has been designed to decelerate in most situations without the use of the brake pedal, while at the same time feeding energy back into the battery.

Used on 24-hours shifts, the I-PACEs* will be charged at five fast-charging stations installed at the depot of the Munich Taxi Centre. “We will implement a schedule with five cars in service and the other five being charged“, explains Beiner, who also expects a cost advantage from his new EV fleet through the low service and running costs.

Thanks to competitive resale values and running costs over the entire life cycle, the I-PACE* – which is offered to private customers for prices starting from €77,850 – is an attractive alternative both for private and business customers, as well as for companies wishing to lower their CO2 footprint and fleet costs. In Germany newly registered EVs will also benefit from a 10-year vehicle tax exemption.

Jaguar designers have taken full advantage of the car’s compact electric drive unit and new levels of space afforded. In the rear, three taxi customers can enjoy 890 mm of legroom, with the 656-litre boot being spacious enough for large amounts of luggage.

The 90kWh Lithium-Ion battery* – for which Jaguar gives an 8-year warranty – allows a range of 470 km* (in the WLTP cycle). On a 100 kW DC quick-charging station, it takes 40 minutes* for the battery to receive an 80 per cent charge.

ELECTRIC

With a state-of-the-art 90kWh Lithium-ion battery using 432 pouch cells, the I-PACE delivers a range of 480km (WLTP cycle). Owners will be able to achieve a 0-80 per cent battery charge in just 40-minutes using DC rapid charging (100kW). Home charging with an AC wall box (7kW) will achieve the same state of charge in just over ten hours – ideal for overnight charging.

A suite of smart range-optimising technologies includes a battery pre-conditioning system: when plugged in the I-PACE will automatically raise (or lower) the temperature of its battery to maximise range ahead of driving away.

PERFORMANCE

Two Jaguar-designed electric motors – which feature driveshafts passing through the motors themselves for compactness – are placed at each axle, producing exceptional performance of 400PS and 696Nm and all-wheel-drive, all-surface traction.

The high torque density and high-energy efficiency characteristics of the motors deliver sports car performance, launching the I-PACE from a standing start to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The instantaneous performance is matched with exceptional ride comfort and engaging driving dynamics.

The bespoke EV aluminium architecture delivers Jaguar’s most rigid body structure with the battery placed centrally between the two axles; these utilise advanced double wishbone front and an Integral Link rear setup with (optional) air suspension and configurable Adaptive Dynamics. The location of the battery enables perfect 50:50 weight distribution and a centre of gravity some 130mm lower than in the F-PACE.

DESIGN

There will be nothing else on the road that looks or drives like the Jaguar I-PACE. It is designed and engineered to take full advantage of its smart electric powertrain and maximise the potential of the packaging benefits it brings.

Its sleek, coupe-like silhouette is influenced by the Jaguar C-X75 supercar with a short, low bonnet, aero-enhanced roof design and curved rear screen. This cab-forward design contrasts with its squared-off rear, which helps reduce the drag co-efficient to just 0.29Cd. To optimise the balance between cooling and aerodynamics, Active Vanes in the grille open when cooling is required, but close when not needed to redirect air through the integral bonnet scoop, smoothing airflow.

Inside, the layout optimises space for passengers while sophisticated materials – including the option of a premium textile Kvadrat interior – and exquisite attention to detail identify this as a true Jaguar.

While a mid-sized SUV, I-PACE’s cab forward design and EV powertrain means interior space comparable to large SUVs. In the rear, legroom is 890mm while, with no transmission tunnel, there’s a useful 10.5-litre central storage compartment. In the rear, tablet and laptop stowage is found beneath the seats, while the rear luggage compartment offers a 656-litre capacity – and 1,453-litres with seats folded flat.

CONNECTED-CAR TECHNOLOGY

I-PACE introduces the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system to Jaguar. Utilising an innovative combination of touchscreens, capacitive sensors and tactile physical controls, Touch Pro Duo is intuitive to use.

A new EV navigation system assesses the topography of the route to destination and insights from previous journeys, including driving style, to calculate personalised range and charging status with exceptional accuracy for maximum driver confidence.

The advanced system uses ‘Smart Settings’ technology – driven by AI algorithms – to identify individual driver preferences, and then tailors the I-PACE’s driving and interior settings accordingly.

OWNERSHIP

With competitive whole-life costs and residual values, the I-PACE will be a popular choice for private customers, professionals and companies seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and fleet costs.

The I-PACE is expected to be available in the MENA region from late 2019 with a wider roll out in 2020. Please contact your local retailer for more information.

As a responsible business Jaguar Land Rover is committed to delivering a cleaner future and has plans to prolong the life of its batteries from its electric vehicle with new recycling partnerships and second life energy storage trials.
