Ford and Effat University Help Women Make History in Saudi Arabia with Safe-Driving Education Course

Ford Motor Company is assisting Saudi Arabian women gain the power of mobility by hosting a special Driving Skills for Life programme with Effat University. Calling on her fellow students to partake, Shams Hakim, Business HR student at Effat, made the announcement on YouTube.

The groundbreaking course – DSFL For Her – follows the landmark decision last year by the Kingdom, as decreed by His Highness, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, to lift the ban on females driving in Saudi Arabia.

“Ford Motor Company was built on the belief that freedom of movement drives human progress, so we are honoured to have the opportunity to support women in the Kingdom during such an extraordinary time, and to welcome them to the driver’s seat,” said Jim Vella, president, Ford Motor Company Fund. “Our DSFL For Her programme provides access to training and experiences that will help women feel safe and confident as they get behind the wheel.”

Based on its award-winning global safe driving initiatives, DSFL has customised an introductory programme which focuses on building women’s confidence behind the wheel, expanding their automotive knowledge, preparing them to take their driving lessons and instilling safe driving practices before they tackle public roads.

This will be the first-ever DSFL For Her introductory programme anywhere in the world, with certified trainers providing the training on closed roads at Effat University’s Jeddah campus.

The four-day DSFL For Her, held between March 5-8, will train more than 250 Effat University students, incorporating four specific modules of in-vehicle experience – Learning About Your Vehicle, Distraction, Impairment, and Braking – preceded by a briefing with the lead instructor.

Dr. Haifa Jamalallail president of Effat University, said: “Effat University is well known for its innovative education, driving women forward to take their rightful places in society and the workforce. We are proud to be able to partner with Ford to ensure that our students are also prepared to become responsible, safe drivers. We believe in driving change, but driving safely, and this is exactly what the Safe Driving Skills for Life programme is all about.”

Driving Skills for Life is an international initiative for road safety created by Ford Fund in cooperation with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and a panel of safety experts. Ford’s signature award-winning programme captures newly-licenced drivers’ interest with free, hands-on ride-and-drive courses that pair new drivers with professional driving instructors and focus on the issues and obstacles that cause crashes, including impaired and distracted driving.

Now in its 15th year, Ford Driving Skills for Life has provided free training to more than one million newly-licenced drivers in more than 40 countries worldwide. In total, Ford has invested more than $40 million in DSFL initiatives worldwide as part of its long-standing commitment to promoting safety on the road.

Since its Middle East launch in 2013, more than 3,600 students have participated in Ford’s Driving Skills for Life programme, with sessions in three different cities across Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates last year alone.

The new DSFL For Her installment will be an on-going programme for women drivers in the Kingdom, with phase two coming later this year.

Nissan puts Saudi women behind the wheel with surprise instructors

Nissan_KSA Women Driving Arab Motor World 2

#SheDrives campaign offers an unforgettable driving experience

Celebrating Saudi Arabia’s historic decision to grant women driver’s licenses, Nissan recently offered a group of young women the chance to get behind the wheel for the first time – with a surprise group of driving instructors.

The company today released an inspirational video about the initiative, part of its #SheDrives campaign, which encourages women to embrace the exciting prospect of becoming fully licensed drivers in 2018.

The women in the video say that while they’re delighted by the prospect, they face reluctance from some of their family members. To help them overcome this, Nissan invited aspiring female motorists to hone their driving skills and build confidence on a closed driving course, with a plot twist: Instead of professional instructors, the women were met by their respective husbands, fathers and brothers, who were their teachers for the day.

“2018 is earmarked to be a pivotal moment in history for women in the kingdom,” said Bader Al Houssami, Chief Operating Officer at Nissan Saudi Arabia. “We wanted to launch a campaign that’s just as emotional as it’s innovative, which ultimately is at the heart of what we at Nissan strive to achieve. The #SheDrives campaign aims to motivate women all over Saudi Arabia with a clear message: When the time comes, the decision to drive will be entirely yours.”

Sierra: The cornerstone of GMC’s legacy in Saudi Arabia

Designed to deliver class-leading capability, Sierra is the ideal truck for Saudis

When it comes to reliability, refinement in design and engineering excellence, Sierra has it all. GMC and its expertly crafted trucks have a long legacy in Saudi Arabia, first entering the Saudi market over 92 years ago with 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles specifically developed for desert use.

With keen attention to detail, interior craftsmanship, quality appointments, and practicality, Sierra is a cut above other trucks and the ideal choice for Saudis of all ages looking for a car that suits a variety of driving conditions, from highway cruising to rough terrain. Entering its tenth decade in the Kingdom, loyalty to GMC as a brand and Sierra as a reliable truck is embedded into generations of Saudi culture.

With GMC’s powerful engine options, innovative technologies and distinct design here is how Sierra has cemented its position in the Kingdom.

  • Off-roading ‘Sierra-style’

A time-honored pastime in Saudi Arabia, Sierra’s power and traction allows for heightened off-roading with controlled descent in rough terrain while delivering professional grade durability, powered by powerful V8 engine options.

Dependent on the trim, Sierra models come equipped with Z71 Off-road suspension, 18- or 20-inch machined-aluminum wheels with All-Terrain tires, an Under-Body Shield, and Floor Liners.

In terms of durability, extensive use of galvanized sheet metal and DURALIFE™ brake rotors protect against corrosion, and spray-on bedliner provides an increase in protection from scratches and dings.

  • Next generation technology

For perpetually connected Saudis, Sierra has purposeful technology, inside and out including Intellilink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Keeping owners connected and in control while on the go, Sierra provides ultimate flexibility and the ability to customize drivers’ media, even allowing them to safely send, read and reply to text messages.

  • Elevating standards

Many Saudis have grown up with the Sierra name and for those who prefer superior comfort, the model’s crafted interior is the complete package. The premium cabin offers heated and vented perforated leather-appointed seats, wireless charging pad and soft-touch instrument panel and door trim, to name but a few.

  • Style meets substance

With a striking appearance, Sierra is built to deliver confidence and refinement, catering to Saudi drivers that are known for their interest in bold design and face a multitude of driving conditions on Saudi Arabia’s roads. High Performance LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, and Thin Profile LED fog lamps, are just some of the available features which set GMC’s truck apart.

  • Camping capabilities

Camping in the Kingdom’s vast landscape is a popular activity and stretches back long before cars were on the scene. With innovative trailering technologies, Sierra is designed to tow and haul with Cruise and Powertrain Grade Braking, providing the ultimate option for transporting campsite necessities. Offering three available high strength steel bed options, Sierra fits everything a keen explorer could need.

  • Hassle-free road trips

With over 200,000km of roads to drive on in Saudi Arabia, Sierra keeps passengers secure, regardless of the road condition. With state-of-the-art safety and driver-alert technologies such as the availability of New Low Speed Forward Automatic Breaking, the vehicle can automatically apply the brakes when it is travelling at a low speed to help reduce a collision’s severity. Other available technologies include Lane Keep Assist, Forward Collision Alert and Safety Alert Seat which gently vibrates to provide drivers with a subtle alert.

  • Bold and street-inspired looks

With a well-known and deeply ingrained interest in car modifications, Sierra exceeds the needs of its discerning Saudi customers with a variety of optional features at every trim level, whether base, SLE, SLT or top-of-the-line Denali. For bumper-to-bumper personalization, accessories range from Illuminated Door Sill Plates, to a wide variety of tonneau bed covers.

1972 Buick GSX

Probably the most mysterious Muscle Car

Buick is one of General Motors luxury line of production and is well known for being one-step directly below the all-luxurious Cadillac; very few have heard or seen a Buick Muscle Car.

We have selected for this issue a very rare surviving Buick Muscle Car the “1972 Buick GSX” owned by Mohammed Al-Sudairi from Saudi Arabia.

Buick started the GS lineup in 1965 and last debatably till 1975, others say it ended in 1972 and some even go further and say that 1971 was the end of it with very few and limited production in 1972.

The story goes back to 1965 when Buick decided to enter the Muscle Car Era with its Buick Skylark platform. At that time General Motors only allowed the 400 Cubic Inch engine to be installed in its intermediate body platforms however Buick had a different say. Buick decided to stuff its muscle car with their existing 401 cubic inch full-size car engine and created the Buick Skylark Gran Sport better known as the Wildcat 445.The model was an instant success and sold almost 16,000 units in 1965.

Throughout the years, The GS brand was getting bigger and better and the best was yet to come.

In 1970, it was the most important milestone in the lifetime of the Buick GS. General Motors lifted the ban on the 400 Cubic engines and it was time to hit the big numbers. Buick stuffed a brand new 455 cubic inch engine into its restyled GS and at that time this engine was considered to be one of the fastest and most intriguing mechanical phenomena especially with its capability to reach high output on lower RPM range.

In mid-1970, Buick introduced the GSX model as an upgrade on the GS 455 model and was one of the most successful and most powerful Muscle Cars ever produced.

In 1971 and with the end of the Muscle Car Era due to new government regulations and restrictions, the production of the GSX model was dropped to 124 units to reach only 44 units in 1972.

Mohammed’s Buick is one of the rare 44 units produced from the 1972 era and it comes equipped with a 455 stage-1 V8 engine producing 360bhp @ 4,600 rpm coped with 692 Nm @ 2,800 rpm, capable of reaching 0-100 KM/h in 6.5 sec and achieve 1/4 mile in 13.8 sec @ 162 KM/h.

Moreover, the 1972 production also witnessed a wide variation of colors after being restricted to only two in early productions; this Buick comes with a burnished Copper Poly color. It also comes equipped with 15-inch magnum 500s twist wheels fitted with 245/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A. On the interior level it has an original dark saddle with a luxurious interior setup and a factory-installed air conditioning system.

It is a very rare surviving classic muscle car. It is one of 44 produced GSX.

1965 Ford Mustang, Where It All Began

Photos By Abdullah Al-Ghamdi & Hani Al-Sultan

Make : Ford
Model : Mustang
Year : 1965

Owner : Khalid AL-Zeer
Country : Saudi Arabia
Member of : Gulf Classic Cars Group (GCCG)

1964 and 1965 witnessed the release of Ford’s muscle car beast that is still in production and has been selling like crazy since day one, Ford Mustang.

The Mustang story goes back to even before the year zero (1964). It all began in 1961 when Lee lacocca, vice president and general manager of Ford Division, had a vision of producing a car that would seat four people, have bucket seats, a floor mounted shifter, be no more than 180 inches (4,572 mm) long, weigh less than 2,500 pounds (1,100 kg), sell for less than $2,500, and have multiple power, comfort, and luxury options.

An internal competition was held between the various three design studios (Ford, Lincoln-Mercury, and Advanced Design), and eventually, in 1962, The Lincoln–Mercury design studio won and produced the winning design.

It took 18 months of production to get the Mustang rolling out of Ford’s assembly line on March 9, 1964. The Mustang has all that was intended for this Pony car. It offered various choices of different interior designs, exterior, and drivetrain options. The Mustang would be able to be ordered as plain, or as fancy, as economical, or as fast, as the buyer wanted. In general, the Mustang was designed for everyone and was advertised as “the car to be designed by you”.

The Ford Mustang was heavily advertised, especially on April 16, 1964, the day before its release. Ford ran simultaneous commercials on all three major television networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS. The following day, April 17, 1964, people “attacked” the Ford showrooms. Ford sold over 22,000 Mustangs the first day. By the end of the year, Ford had sold 263,434. By the end of the Mustang’s first anniversary, April 17, 1965, Ford had sold 418,812 Mustangs. The Mustang had made a name for itself, and it was here to stay!

Ford manufactured the first generation Ford Mustang from March 1964 until 1973. The introduction of the Mustang created a new class of automobile known as the pony car.

As for our 1965 Ford Mustang 2-door Hardtop Coupe Original Rangoon Red, owned by Khalid AL-Zeer, it comes equipped with 289 cu in (4.7 L) Windsor V8 producing 225hp.

This pony car came with factory power steering, power breaks, and the Red Interior Decor Group that was popularly known as “Pony Interior” due to the addition of embossed running ponies on the seat fronts, and other interior features.

MG Motor announces Middle East launch for new RX5 at this year’s Saudi International Motor Show

MG Motor has announced that it will showcase its new RX5 compact SUV for the first time in the Middle East at this year’s Saudi International Motor Show (17-21 December). The launch of the RX5, which encapsulates the famous British brand’s exciting future, coincides with the company’s debut at this important automotive extravaganza.

Mr. Tom Lee, Managing Director SAIC Motor Middle East, said: “The Saudi International Motor Show is one of the most important events in the Middle East motoring calendar, so we feel it is the ideal platform for us to launch such an important new car to the region. The MG RX5 embodies the positive, new direction this famous brand is taking, and we are looking forward to rolling it out across the region.”

The RX5 will be the latest model to join MG’s exciting range of cutting-edge vehicles. It boasts an attractive, futuristic design, exemplified by the stylish LED headlamps and imposing front grille. Inside the cabin a high quality finish complements the quietness of the ride, while best-in-class space ensures equally high comfort levels and owners will also benefit from a range of the latest technological features.

Power is derived from a choice of two turbocharged engines. Both 2.0T and 1.5T units deliver impressive performance and efficiency, and are mated to six and seven-speed transmissions respectively. Great performance isn’t compromised when it comes to safety, with the RX5 offering a wide range of passive and active safety measures.

The RX5 will be joined on the MG stand by the ZS crossover, another new model that marks an exciting new era of design for the iconic brand and which will be making its regional show debut in Jeddah. Based on ‘Emotional Dynamism’, the MG ZS embodies a more expressive design language that emphasises the premium experience and commitment to quality of the ambitious brand.

Commitment to design excellence is continued in the interior of the MG ZS, with touches that nod to a dynamic and exclusive space for the driver, while being accessible and user-friendly for any passengers. The interior features soft materials with a colour contrast from the dark grey base to create a layered effect. A trend for ‘bigger’ connectivity means 8” infotainment screens will become a signature of MG going forward, as it looks to target a younger generation.

The presence of MG, which is owned by SAIC Motor, at the Saudi International Motor Show follows the recent announcement of the brand’s return to the Kingdom as it accelerates the expansion of its new product lineup. MG’s first Saudi showroom, on Madina Road in Jeddah, was opened in November in collaboration with the company’s Saudi retail partner, Taajeer Group.

This is an unrestored fully original 1976 Cadillac Eldorado convertible front-wheel drive equipped with full options.

It has very low mileage almost 1700 miles, this vehicle spent its life hidden in California’s bunkers and is one of the few surviving low mileage original-state Cadillac’s.

The Exterior color is Georgian Silver Poly that comes with a black original leather interior.

The uniqueness of this car comes from the fact that 1976 was the year were manufactures introduced the electronic fuel injection system and the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible was one of the lucky few to run it on its engine.

I purchased this car from its original owner in 2012 with only 1300 miles on it; I love it because these are very soft smooth cars to ride. When you drive this type of cars, you feel like driving a big boat – said Yahya
