Ain’t No Mountain High Enough for the Chevrolet Bolt EV

As part of a 2,000km-plus road trip from the UAE to Oman and back, the Chevrolet Bolt EV took on one of the region’s most challenging driving roads

With its unprecedented 500km-plus driving range, the 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV has already moved the goalpost when it comes to mainstream electric vehicles. However, as part of the 2019 Electric Vehicle Road Trip (EVRT), it has proven its credentials as an electric vehicle that can tackle the most challenging roads the region can throw at it.

Starting on January 17 from Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, the eight-day event covered 2,000 kilometers, driving all the way to Muscat, Oman and back to the UAE via Ras Al-Khaimah. While the Bolt EV managed the roundtrip with ease, it was in Ras Al-Khaimah that the Bolt EV cemented its capabilities with a drive up Jebel Jais’ snaking mountain roads.

Rising 1,934m above sea level, Jebel Jais can be taxing on any vehicle. With its camber changes, tight switchbacks and long sweepers it pushes vehicle engineering to the limit. On the run up the mountain, the Bolt EV’s 360Nm of torque, which is available from virtually standstill, played a big role in the handling the elevation changes and delivering a thrilling driving experience. The Bolt’s dynamic ability is also down to the packaging of the batteries under the floor pan, which lowers the center of gravity, giving it greater stability while tackling corners.

Since the air thins with rising altitude and temperatures drop, this proved a boon for the Bolt EV. Unlike a conventional petrol vehicle which loses power as oxygen levels drop, the Bolt EV faced no such issues and was able to perform at its optimum.

On the way, down the Bolt’s regenerative systems came into play and recuperated as much as 94kms worth of battery charge through braking alone. Furthermore, the Bolt’s one-pedal driving feature provided an experience unlike any other vehicle, electric or conventional.

Tackling real-world conditions of city driving, long highway cruises and now one of the most challenging mountain roads in the region, the Chevrolet Bolt EV has decisively proven its abilities no matter what the driving conditions.

Launched here today, these motorcycles are priced AED 19,999 onwards for the Interceptor INT 650, and AED20,399 onwards for the Continental GT 650, for the Standard colourways, making these motorcycles a perfect blend of authentic appeal, contemporary fun ride experience, and accessibility. It was in 2015 that Royal Enfield opened its first exclusive store in Dubai and showcased its entire motorcycle, apparel and genuine motorcycle accessories range.

McLaren 720S GT3 stuns on global race debut in Abu Dhabi

The brand new McLaren 720S GT3 came tantalisingly close to a stunning win on its global competitive debut at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi.

The first GT racer designed and built in-house by McLaren Customer Racing dominated much of the second half of the race at the Yas Marina Circuit before suspension trouble dropped the car to a nevertheless impressive fifth place.

The #5 car’s pace – and a totally trouble-free run for 10 hours in the hands of McLaren Automotive Factory Driver Ben Barnicoat (GB) and his teammates Álvaro Parente (PT) and Shane van Gisbergen (NZ) – turned heads in a paddock that included top GT racing cars, teams and drivers from around the world.

The McLaren 720S GT3 run by McLaren Customer Racing was quick out-of-the-box, setting encouraging times during the three practice sessions on the Yas Marina circuit – home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. It was in the hunt for pole position in its first ever qualifying session, with Barnicoat immediately topping the times. Co-drivers Parente and van Gisbergen continued to show impressive pace, however the car was pipped at the post by just half a tenth on aggregate times to take second in the GT3 class ahead of 16 competitors and third overall on the 33-car grid.

The race itself was split into two six-hour events and in the first of these, Barnicoat took the 720S GT3 into the lead after just an hour of its racing career. The combined efforts of all three drivers and the McLaren Customer Racing team would keep the Papaya Spark-coloured car in the hunt for the whole six hours, despite several incidents and two safety car interventions. The team reached the mid-point of the race in second overall, and ready to attack from the start of the second race.

The second part of the race showed the potential of the new McLaren 720S GT3, as the #5 car headed the charge to the flag. Within two laps van Gisbergen had taken the lead on the back straight, and by the end of Hour 10 the car had lapped the entire field.

Unfortunately, the dream of a win on the car’s global race debut was over moments later when an issue with the right front suspension forced van Gisbergen into the pits for repairs. Rapid work from the team saw the car return to action after just 13 minutes and with Ben Barnicoat back behind the wheel, set about chasing down the leaders. In the closing 90 minutes, the gap was reduced and the #5 720S GT3 crossed the line an impressive fifth in the GT3 Pro class and eighth overall, completing 309 laps of the Yas Marina circuit.

“It’s been a great start to the competitive life of the 720S GT3, which has proven itself against a world-class field and just as importantly, successfully progressed the development programme. I am incredibly proud of the efforts of the team at the circuit and back in Woking, who have achieved this result against world-class opposition.

“The experience of going wheel-to-wheel with the teams and cars that our customers will be aiming to beat with the 720S GT3 in the future has proved invaluable as we continue to learn lessons about how to get the very best from the car. Add that experience to the vast amount that we have learned during the design, build, testing and development with the McLaren 720S GT3 so far and we are growing in confidence about the prospects for the newest racing member of the McLaren family.”

The McLaren Customer Racing team will continue the 720 GT3 test and development programme, ahead of homologation early in 2019 which will enable the car to compete in a variety of GT3 racing championships around the world.

‘Unseen Potential’ – Art from Scrap and Discarded Parts – Al Tayer Motors stages unique art exhibit featuring creations by technicians

Al Tayer Motors, one of the UAE’s premier automobile dealerships representing Ford, Lincoln, Jaguar, Land Rover, Maserati, Ferrari and Ford Trucks, is staging a unique exhibit of some truly stunning works of art made by recycling discarded automobile parts and scrap material.

Titled ‘Unseen Potential’, the display is the result of an internal competition organised for the technicians of Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors. The exhibition will be held until September 22 and the outcomes of the exhibition will support UAE- approved charitable causes.

The art objects will be on display at the dealership’s Sheikh Zayed Road showroom in Dubai and is open to everyone, especially art lovers and automotive enthusiasts. Visitors can even place bids for their favourite pieces – a new feature added in response to strong interest from customers to buy many works of art created for the previous competition.

“This is the second time we have organised such a competition and once again it witnessed enthusiastic participation from our talented technicians who have created some remarkable pieces of art. Al Masaood has announced the opening of a new Volvo Penta Spare Parts Centre in Sharjah. The opening of the new facility addressing the UAE’s northern region’s increased demand for spare parts of Volvo Penta, a global manufacturer of power solutions for marine and industrial applications.

The new Spare Parts Centre in Sharjah will offer genuine Spare parts, accessories for marine leisure and commercial segments and industrial engines, and it is the latest addition to the existing Volvo Penta Aftersales Centre’s located in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Al Masaood’s new Volvo Penta Spare Parts Centre is strategically located at the 6th Street of the Sharjah Industrial Area and close to the neighboring emirates of Ajman, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.
